The Black Heart Procession - Classic or Dud?

Totally classic although I haven't heard the new album enough to comment on it. They succeed in creating a signature sound that few bands have anything like.

absolute undeniable classic. the new record is actually probabvbly their best, though I doubted it till I'd heard it many times.

Search: most of album one and "It's a Crime I Never Told You About the Diamonds in Your Eyes" from the follow-up. Destroy: the sameness of it all. Before the latest one, they basically made the same album three times with varying degrees of success. They could have had two fantastic albums instead of two good ones and two mediocre ones.

I like the new direction of the latest LP, by the way...

Oh yeah, and if you're interested in other bands that are in a vaguely similar vein, check out the Souled American reissues on tUMULt.

I just picked up a 7" that I've never seen and it is pretty good. The guitar sound is louder...

My favourite band of the past 2 years. Absolute Classic. A joy live.

I love the first three records (and the new one blows), but Chunklet said it best: "Change keys, goddamn you! CHANGE KEYS!!!"

two years pass...
Oh no. I think they may be done for.

I caught their show at Spaceland last night and they played a few new songs, all of which were truly embarrassing in both sound and lyrics.

The aesthetics of the new tracks was so unlike them, I can't help but think someone is forcing them to change their sound completely.

Too bad. I really liked these guys, and the last album, while not as good as the first three, was still in their realm. This new stuff is like......Blink 182!!!

WOT?

Occam's Reznor (ex machina), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

wow - I was bummed about missing that show. now less so.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Crazy. :-/ Someone was telling me about wanting to go that show on Saturday, and as Roger sez, now I'm not so troubled by that...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that's...depressing, if it's true.

How come Three Mile Pilot was so much more diverse? It seems like Black Heart tried too hard to be a concept band, and now that they are diverging from the concept, it's falling apart. Go figure.

BHP and Three Mile Pilot are totally classic.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of stunned, actually. I've seen these guys three times: the first time their Knitting Factory show following the release of "three", which was a fantastic experience. A tight, brilliantly executed set where they maintained an enigmatic funeral-esque stage presence for the duration, Pall dressed like an undertaker with wrap around shades and singing into a Bob Barker-style microphone like a preacher. The other two shows were in San Diego at the Casbah and had more of a local bar band vibe, but still well-played and engrossing.

Last night I brought a friend from San Diego who was an old fan from the Three Mile Pilot days, and he was really excited about seeing them, and by mid-set he wanted to leave. Even some of the early tracks were sloppily executed. Really sad. :(

You're right about the concept aspect, Tim. BHP may only do one thing, but they do it perfectly. I was hoping their current growth would be more in the direction of instrumental soundscapes if anything, or maybe even concept albums like the last one, where they still hold on to their signature sound.

Last night was the last thing I was expecting, and it stung. Note: PJ Harvey showed up all by her lonesome to see them exclusively (I saw her parking her car and walking in shortly before they went on). She disappeared pretty early in the set, which went on for almost an hour and a half.

But I still love these guys, it's just really disappointing to see them deflating like this. Pall even made fun of Christina Aguillera and Jessica Simpson in the set (which was a little obvious, but whatever), refering to their trendiness. Then they go and deliver three really bad indie pop songs. WTF?

The great thing about 3MP was that they never put out a dud....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Hmm bummer :-(
So what car is Polly driving these days?

Marcel Verhoeven (Marcel Verhoeven), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

here's my Loosing My Edge accomplishment. sometime in the mid - late 90s i went to an artshow in Hollywood at some old elementary school and these guys were playing in a janitor's closet. there was barely enough room to fit the keyboard and saw.

I didn't notice Polly's car itself. My friend was looking for parking, which is restricted in that area after 11pm. He commented on a hipster girl who we saw parking in a restricted space anyway as being "a bad-ass". As she was strutting across our path, I was like "She is a bad-ass. She's PJ Harvey..." Kind of short, but pretty hot.....

Never looked back at her car- my eyes were kind of fixated elsewhere.....

The looming shadow of the big baller/shot caller (M@tt He1ges0n), Sunday, 8 November 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

haven't listened to these dudes in a loooong time, but pretty sure the 1st album is the one to get/only one you need?

the last song ("heart the size of a horse") on the first LP is definitely some mid-era Brian Eno tribute .
