Was it just me, or was it a bit rubbish, and how big a part did Miss Black America play in making it that way?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 27 December 2002 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

New "So there was only one track off Hate and it was the single and it only made #44 - GET OVER IT" answers here...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 27 December 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Got a list?

Last time I listened was '98 I think. Peel's listeners don't deserve him.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 27 December 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't think a list has gone up yet. Top five was:

1) Saloon - Girls Are The New Boys
2) Cinerama - Quick, Before It Melts
3) Miss Black America
4) Nina Nastasia - Ugly Face
5) Antihero

1 & 4, fine - 2 is alright, but not great by Cinerama's standards - 3 & 5 were just plain rubbish.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 27 December 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Miss Black America don't exist anymore

_, Friday, 27 December 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

who/what is miss black america?

robin (robin), Friday, 27 December 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently they do, though. They're off on tour with Reuben and Kinesis anyhow.

Oh, and they're an indie band from Bury St Edmunds who have vowed that they will get big without 'playing the game' as such, i.e. they're putting out all their records on their own label. They do seem like quite nice, intelligent people, but their music sounds like My Vitriol.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 27 December 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Top 5 = kind of rubbish and I missed 50-25 or thereabouts but 10-20 was full of loads of stuff I hadn't thought much of at the time but decided yesterday was actually great. I don't know if I was right yesterday or if it was just too much booze and tinsel or something. (Actually this quite often happens but last year's really was mostly awful, it might even have been the other way round in that stuff I thought was ok the first time around left me swearing at the radio in disgust during the F50.)

I even nearly liked that MBA track at number 3 because the dodgy intro lyrics sound like the kind of feeble angst I keep myself awake worrying about until it got more bleaty and I thought, "yeah, but all the people who think MBA [yeah, I haven't heard of any for six months either, but this must be proof some still exist] are really cool would laugh at you even harder if YOU said something like that," and I returned to cynical misanthropy for long enough to look for more vodka.

wasn't it awful? terrible. just...urgh.
so out of date, so plain and dull and flat and bland.

kieran, Saturday, 28 December 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

wow. i am so out of touch with the youth of today

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 28 December 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't heard a single song on that list.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 28 December 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's funny he did a Fabric Live Mix, can John Peel and Grooverider be far off?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 28 December 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Suxor list. Some good ones, but there are FIFTY, so getting a FEW good ones wouldn't be hard would it?

Callum (Callum), Saturday, 28 December 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

17 (download NOW!!!), 31, 49 are all good.

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

yep, saloon.saloon are damn fine indeed, they deserve that.sorta englischer kraut rock.their album '(this is)what we call progress' (i think that's the title).is damn excellent.and live, they're brilliant, seen 'em about 3 times i think ,and they improve every single time.if you heard them you'd probably really like 'em,and even if you didn't like 'em,you'd appreciate their musicianship.

Myles, Saturday, 28 December 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Seventeen aint all that, it gets boring pretty fast. Green Grass of Tunnel is far bettah

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Saturday, 28 December 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

17 is phenomenal Chupa, Green Grass not wet enough, nor blippy enough for Mum FAR too doe-eyed.

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i think this year's festive 50 reflects how bands with dedicated fanbase/band members with lots of spare time can do really well. Last year (I think) Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia got into the top 10 partly because they asked the fans on the mailing list to vote, and Antihero and Miss Black America (especially) do have that sort of fanbase.

jellybean (jellybean), Saturday, 28 December 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i think this year's festive 50 reflects how bands with dedicated fanbase/band members with lots of spare time can do really well.

for 'this year's festive 50' read 'that night at the brits'.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 29 December 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Are Sallon that are number one the same indie schmindie Saloon who seem to be oplaying at every Strange Fruit/Track and field/ other indie toilet in London?

chris (chris), Monday, 30 December 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. That would be John Peel Listeners In 'Liking Indie' Shocker, then.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 30 December 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i am a boring indie and i have only heard seven of these songs, i am slipping. is this the first hefner free list in like 7 years?

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 30 December 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

3 songs from that slightly okayish low album! bloody hell.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 30 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

normally i have heard most of them but this year it's a pathetic 27. Are Miss black America or Antihero worth bothering with?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Keith - it's only cos Hefner didn't put out an album this year.

ESOJ - Probably not.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard 4 of them.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking hell, it's all still Dave Gedge and Half Man Half Biscuit! 1986 never went away!

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

But where is Bogshed's 'Fat Boy Exam Failure'?

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)
