I downloaded a couple of songs and its not bad. Singer sounds like Robert Smith. Is it worth buying?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 27 December 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

CRAP

worst live band ever and dickheads to boot
the album isn't very good imho but ymmv

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 27 December 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it's not. "Talk to Me, Dance to Me" (I think that's the title) is the only good track. If you dig power-pop you might like it. Essentially it's power-pop dressed up with a few phaser sounds... Dull in every way.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 27 December 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a trip, some people like this. i don't think he sounds like robert smith. he just sounds bad, really bad. also lose that stoopid keyboard

ron (ron), Friday, 27 December 2002 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i bought it and to me the Walkmen do it better.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it sucks also.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 27 December 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "Touch You Touch You" and that's about it.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Friday, 27 December 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait a second, I saw them live at the Halifax Pop Explosion and they were fantastic! Any band that gets an audience of uptight indie kids to get up and dance has to be good. And "Make Up the Breakdown" is pretty good, esp. "Bandages".

Simon H., Friday, 27 December 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Any band that gets an audience of uptight indie kids to get up and dance has to be good.

this is arguable.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 27 December 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree..

The Faint get kids to dance all the time but they make some of the worst music I can think of.

I think "making people dance" isn't a goal that adds quality. if a band appeals to the aesthetic of uptight indie kids, and happens to have a beat, then said uptight indie kids'll think "hey cool, they're not lame and they dance, maybe I could too..." and there you have it, dancing indie assholes. There's also so many bands doing the "its cool to dance, yr a square if you don't" thing so people seem ready now:

Out Hud, !!!, The Faint, The Rapture, Hot Hot Heat, Radio 4, etc. etc. etc.

pretty much all of those bands save for Radio 4 and maybe the Rapture, but maybe not, can eat it as far as I'm concerned. I like dancing but I don't need some pretty indie boys telling me "its ok to dance man, dont' bum out the party!" I know its OK to dance, oh pied piper of the jaded hipster children. you go ahead and play, and I'll decide if I feel like shakin my ass...

tinobeat (tinobeat), Friday, 27 December 2002 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Could be worse, you could live in the city where most of these bands live. Then you'd get to hear their bullshit about what subway train you should or shouldn't complain about riding.

hstencil, Friday, 27 December 2002 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't be such a spoilsport, hstencil! That's a funny trackname, and the reasoning behind it ("Everyone that lives in Williamsburg mocks it. We live here, we like it and want to say so," was essentially their explanation to me) is completely valid.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 27 December 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The G train is preferable cuz it allows you to get to Wburg from downtown Brooklyn.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 December 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The G train is preferable to ABSOLUTELY NOTHING 'cause it NEVER FUCKING COMES ('cept when I'm at the Bergen stop and I'm waiting for the F and then it's only Ghost trains, Murphy's Law HAHAHA).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 27 December 2002 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually take it from the Bergen stop because that's the closest G stop to my house (about a ten-block walk from the station). I never had a problem with it.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 December 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

You must live right by my girlfriend. She's a 15 minute walk from the Bergen stop (the closest one) as well.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 27 December 2002 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

GREAT

Most original and exciting band I've heard in a LONG time.

And if one more person compares them to the Cure (They sound abso-fuckin'-lutely nothing like the Cure. Nothing), I am going to go Apeshit.

David Allen, Friday, 27 December 2002 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the album (and the preceding EP), but I'm neither a jaded hipster or a dancer. Who made up those rules anyway?

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 28 December 2002 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Hot Hot Heat too, in spite of what bugs me about them (which I can't quite articulate). But the singer does sound a little like Robert Smith, and a little like Ben Folds, and Elvis Costello, and Mick Jones, and the dude from the Sugarplastic, and the dude from the Rapture. Not a bad combination.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 December 2002 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't listened to the album since the day I got it but it's good. Kind of. Not worthy of the disses they've gotten here. Inoffensive, I guess.

adam (adam), Saturday, 28 December 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Romulan Light. Yuck.

Dave Fischer, Saturday, 28 December 2002 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Who gives a fuck what train you do or don't ride? The track title is as stupid as anything else. Last time I rode the L, it wasn't all jaded hipsters. Then again, every time I do ride it, there's always some weird-o retard with A Flock of Seagulls-style haircut, so there you go.

Arguing over trains is dumb. Almost as dumb as telling a crowd "It's okay to dance." IF I WANTED TO DANCE TO YOUR SHITTY WATERED-DOWN THIRD-HAND TECHNO, I WOULD, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Shit, techno is good, so I'm not sure what you would call those bands, consisting of kids who think they're geniuses because they found out, like last week, that SHOCKER dance music exists!

hstencil, Saturday, 28 December 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

they are the dave matthews band of the 'nu post punk' crop. so bland and the vocals are forced as hell.

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 28 December 2002 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is where i separate the sheep from the goats

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 28 December 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Who gives a fuck what train you do or don't ride?

I care. I don't like the L because I'm in Brooklyn and if I need to take it, I have to go into Manhattan on a different train, catch the L from 14th St., go back INTO Brooklyn, and do all that in reverse when my night is over. It's a pain in the fucking ass. And the G doesn't stop at Bedford, so if I take it from Bergen St., I have to get off in Greenpoint and walk through an entire neighborhood to get where I need to go.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 December 2002 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Take a more direct bus then, geez.

hstencil, Saturday, 28 December 2002 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, Mr. Transit Authority Authority, point me to one.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 December 2002 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Where you trying to get to, and from where? Shit, like check the MTA web site.

The B61 is an extensive route, and I don't wanna hear you ILMers say you're too good for the bus.

hstencil, Saturday, 28 December 2002 04:37 (twenty-three years ago)

HHH are fun. They're not to be taken seriously, but Bandages is a catchy song.

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Saturday, 28 December 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Where you trying to get to, and from where?

Shit, like read the thread.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 December 2002 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

HSTENCIL: "geez" = "geezah" and not "jesus christ"; this is "jeez".

_, Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Geez n' Gosh then?!?!?!?

Fucking limeys and their Streets worship...

hstencil, Saturday, 28 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I, like everyone else, finds conversations about different streets and truely exilerating and endlessly witty; maybe their bottomless pit of entertainment has run dry. So kindly, SHUT THE FUCK UP PLZ K THNX

David Allen, Saturday, 28 December 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

public transit > tired indie rock keyboard band with robert smith vocals, i'm afraid

G TRAIN 4 LIFE
RYDE OR DIE BITCH

D**** A****, Saturday, 28 December 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Would it be better if we started some sort of "feminist rant" then?

hstencil, Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Would it be better if we started some sort of "feminist rant" then?
-- hstencil (hstenci...), December 28th, 2002.

That doesnt even make any sense.

David Allen, Sunday, 29 December 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

oh it does, a lot of sense

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 29 December 2002 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 29 December 2002 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

That doesnt even make any sense.

therein lies the underlying tragedy/comedy of it all, i ph34r

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 29 December 2002 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

haha "lies the underlying"!! i rool

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 29 December 2002 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

now, back to talking about Hot Hot Heat ...

... very tempted to say "dud," if for no other reason than the lead singer's voice -- and he does does sound like Robert Smith (filtered through Elvis Costello) -- and they're way too wordy and not in a good way. matter of fact, they're inching close to being punchable.

and the music sounds really half-assed.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 29 December 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

This probably sounds like a joke, but I keep confusing them in my mind with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (whose forgettable EP will soon end up in the trade me pile).

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 29 December 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

If they did any opening slots for Sloan this summer then dud. Faux atichude and a real disposition problem as well. I fear I just may have them confused with Hot Little Rocket but have forgotten what both bands sound like.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Though its nice to know Im not the only one round here who makes the trip to Hellnback for HPX.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

seven years pass...

Ah, the early 00s. Did you guys know these guys were still making music? I didn't!

kkvgz, Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

No. No I did not. I actually loved the first album and they were pretty good the one time I saw them but I'd pretty much forgotten about them entirely.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

I thought they were going to be huge after the Make Up the Breakdown record, but the follow-up was one of the great momentum killers of the decade.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

Funny that this came thread got revived today. I just read a review of their latest album while on the bus about half an hour ago. Our local rag claims it's a return to their "punk roots".

everything, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

"the group has suddenly transformed itself into a new and truly impressive beast."

everything, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
