just written it, bit pissed and knackered so sorry if its shit...just thought you might like to know, i figure no-one has checked it out for a bit as there's been no new info, but prepare to squint til it hurts once more

http://boomselection.info

and fill in the blanks cos i know there are some - reminisce with me about the Year of the Bootleg Mash-Up Type Thing here as well, did it mean anything to you? what were your favourites? how do you feel about them now? what next for Richard X or Soulwax?

i dont plan on updating boomselection again but there will be something on similar lines running very soon, and ILM will most likely be influencing a fair bit of the material to be uploaded and featured online as it does with Gabba.net - so that will be nice eh?

shite, forgot to mention DJ Yoda - still havent got his mix CDs tho i somehow know they're great

cheer up Nate, maybe if i keep goading the_dr in such subtle fashion he will re-emerge to dispense his wrath upon me for taking such liberties, tho in reality the death of bootlegs as 'talk of the town' and its establishment in the conscience of the zeitgeist now does actually render Boom Selection somewhat irrelevant in its current guise, other than as a handy place to actually download the mp3s, but we got Gabba and Soulseek for that now eh?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 December 2002 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

and fucking hell, someone has already e-mailed to say they still havent got their CDs and dont seem to be appreciating my sarcastic approach - a German guy, i knew they were efficient but that takes the piss...he's right tho of course...only, its not MY responsibility/obligation - arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 December 2002 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

For what it's worth, I'm one of those people who still haven't recieved my copy yet. This was ordered, oh, back in August. I'm still seriously debating whether to include it on my year-end albums list anyway.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 December 2002 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and all my favorite bootlegs from this year were actually done last year. Except for the ones my fellow ILxers did, my own included.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 December 2002 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

But still, bootlegs meant LOTS to me this year -- I have had tears well up in my eyes listening to the Freelance Hellraiser, the Avalanches' Ibiza mix, Radio Soulwax and even Philip Jeck (a cousin of the movement you could say) -- and much of this is Boom Selection's fault.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 December 2002 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael I can send you a copy if you mail me your address, it wont be the 'official' version as such (no cd cover, tracklisting etc.) but you wouldnt be missing a great deal in that respect

the delay with the CDs is mystifying even to me, i cant understand why its taking so long for some people - i wish i knew, trying to contact the_dr to find out - dont think he's been even reading his e-mails the last few months, seems like there have been just too many orders/queries/complaints to deal with, but still...it cant take that long - no excuse really

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in exactly the same situation as Michael.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

oh really? dammit there must be hundreds...but from what the_dr said ages ago, all orders up until September had been fulfilled...hmmmmmmm...

not really feasible for me to sort everyone out with a copy but i'll do what i can, especially for the ILX peeps as CD swapping/gifting is popular here and its like buying you a pint effectively...send me your addresses if you please, dont worry i'll keep them in confidence, delete them etc., along with the rest of my hard drive while i await that inevitable doorknock from the rozzers, erk

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever happened to Richard X sorting through the Virgin Records vaults to come up with the ultimate legal bootleg mash-up project? I really believed majors would take this idea to the next level, anything to revive their business...

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

new richard x 7" out on promo. the jury is still out.....

stirmonster, Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm also in the same boat as Michael/Graham, and I ordered in August.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 30 December 2002 05:10 (twenty-three years ago)

why is boom selection dead/finished ?
am confused.

piscesboy, Monday, 30 December 2002 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

took the money and ran

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 30 December 2002 08:40 (twenty-three years ago)

why is boom selection dead/finished ?

cos it was anyway - the CDs really did kill it. the_dr was too busy sorting those out to work on the blog/new site, mky and i continued with it for a while but by then the scene had gotten too big for a basic blog to really stay on top of, rendering bbomselection kind of redundant in its present form. makes sense to stop doing it under the current situation, especially as my own interest has naturally waned - although boomselection's musical remit is easily expandable i'd rather do my own thing

and i WISH i HAD made some money out of it now

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 December 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

FWIW, this was one of the essential blogs / music resources of 2002, blueski. For the first five or six months of the year THE MOST essential IMO. My thanks to you and others for all you did.

Jeff W, Monday, 30 December 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

if you do want to keep abreast of the lastest bootlegs i recommend McSleazy's site - http://www.mcsleazybootlegs.co.uk - the excellent message board will keep you informed on any major developments, and you can also download new stuff as it gets posted

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 December 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't know Boomselection was you Steve. My old boss was obsessed with it, almost to the point of mania.

four months pass...
I got my CD on Saturday (ordered in September). I've sold my MP3 CD player since though, so have to listen to it on my computer.

Anyone else?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

a few people reported they'd received their CDs last week. its mystifying - but it looks like the person responsible has been provoked into fulfilling the rest of the outstanding orders. Graham i forgot you ordered one and wouldve burned you a copy if you'd reminded me! same goes for james blount and whoever else on ILX ordered copies. i had to stop doing them in the end but a couple more would be fine (except my burner is crap and the cd-rs i bought off Belgian Dave down the market are even crapper)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I received mine ages ago but because I don't really like listening to music on a computer while I'm working on the same computer I converted the whole thing to regular CD format--am I sick or what? 28 CD burns! I was so weary after doing this I haven't felt like listening to much of it yet, though I hope to some day.

(Not at all. This is Net-time, that was eons ago...)

Nice comeback. With the copyright "Subscriber X" showdown scheduled for September, it couldn't be more topical.

Let the crime-spree begin!

Sad news, blueski. But glad it was around when it was!

eighteen years pass...

is gabba still around in some form?

brisk money (lukas), Tuesday, 26 April 2022 16:00 (four years ago)

In the “Things you were shockingly old when you learned” department: I was today years old when I learned the Boom Selection mp3 CD collection, which I still have and have been jamming for years, came from a blog also called Boom Selection and an ilxor was the brains behind all of it.
