Faith Hill - "Cry"

Has anyone else HEARD this?

I know, I know, I'm a sucker for a sad sappy tune sung by a pretty dame (cf. me defending the honor of Norah Jones) (& don't get me started on Xtina), but have you HEARD this? All that bluster she offered back in the day re: this kiss & the way she gets loved & all that icky sticky love shit gets flipped around and goes sour like last month's milk. Reminds me of Aerosmith's "Jaded", in that there seem to be minor chords in the song & stuff. Reminds me of "Unbreak My Heart", too, if that song were any good.

You have undone your entire point with one careless sentence. (Personally, I'm more concerned that it's becoming difficult for me to tell Faith Hill and Britney Spears apart.)

I know you are cool and all, but shouldn't it be Xina, since there's already a T at the end of CHRIST?
Just wondering,

True, true (esp. regarding the me = cool part). Thanks, Horace.

And I'm so glad Dan bit on my bait! That Toni Braxton slight was really more an attempt to sucker him (& anyone else) into the conversation more than a legitimate claim, of course. (Not that I'm any fonder of "Unbreak My Heart" or anything.)

I don't want to go off on some tangent re: "Cry" being more legitimate than her presumably poofy love songs, even if heartbreak seems to be a more legitimate (or more understandable, from my vantage point) emotion / state of being than heartunbreak. But, thematically, it's not dissimilar from Justin's "Cry Me a River" - it's as if all of the repressed bitterness & seething frustration et. al. covered up by their formerly perky & eboullient facades burst through & put them in touch with things they are actually feeling. That's all booshit, though.

Dave, I'd love to have a debate with you on the merits of the new Faith Hill single, but she's so fucking awful that I run from the room when I hear her voice and actively avoid everything I see that has her name on it. So, you have me at an advantage on this one, although I still feel secure enough to say that even if I heard the new song and liked it, the crimes of "Breathe" against humanity are so massive and traumatic that a special place in Hell has been prepared for Ms. Hill where she will be strapped into medical stirrups and be forced to endure imps and lesser demons screaming "Now I can see YOU breathe, ho!" while punching her in the unmentionables for all eternity.

(Woah flashback to angry teen Dan there for a second)

"Unbreak My Heart" rulez. Have you heard the house remix? It's almost "I Will Survive" good in that guise...

As for Faith Hill, I'm open to a good song. She is impossibly attractive, but looks SO different than what she used to that if I were to get wit her, I'd be afraid of what I'd wake up to.

Dan, we're going to need to perform some sort of Folger's Taste Test white label switcheroo, because it's really quite good (keeping in mind that this is ME saying it's good). Turn the other cheek, Dan'l.

Even my dad, contemporary country devotee that he is, Shania-listening Brooks & Dunn fan that he is, recognizes that this song is shit. My dad, who can listen to "I Will Always Love You" without flinching, who has his Juice Newton albums proudly on display next to his record player, thinks this song is "insipid and boring."

And my dad owns BOTH Mortal Kombat soundtracks. Nyeah. (Christ, I'm sounding like a less-witty Ned.)

I really am a sucker for the sappy stuff (I found myself really belting out "Against All Odds" when it came on the radio yesterday -- meep!), but "Cry" is pretty unremarkable. It's the definition of bland, the kind of music people leave on in the backround while they do the dishes. It seems wrong to compare it to a wonderful weepie like "Unbreak My Heart"; Toni Braxton has far more personality to her voice, there's so much melodrama it's like a little Douglas Sirk-esque epic.

The actual lachrymose songs from Douglas Sirk movies are much better, search "Imitation of Life" and "Written on the Wind."

"Imitation of Life" sung of course over the image of jewels falling down in slow motion and gradually filling up the screen.
