so i downloaded the song "rolling with heat" by the roots and "knock knock" by the gza and both of them would just play for like 30 seconds and then fade out, only to repeat the same 30 seconds, fade, etc. for the length of the song. is this some new technique to make me buy albums or what?? anyone else experienced this?

I had that happen w/ some No Doubt & Red Hot Chili Peppers MP3s. It's just a matter of trial & error. At least the No Doubt MP3s looped 30-second fragments of each song on the album (excepting the single, which was available in its entirety); the RHCP MP3s for _By The Way_ ALL looped the title track. Not funny, WB. Not funny at all.

I too would like to know the story here

well, a friend was telling me about what eminem supposedly did before his last album came out. they flooded the internet with semi-bogus songs just before the release of the album. the 'fake' songs were just loops of the choruses, if i remember correctly. i think the point is to a) let people hear the hooks and want to hear the real songs and b)make it much more difficult to get the actual songs on the net. cuz you can't really tell if it's real or not until you download it.

i've got rjd2 songs which all have a vocal sample laid over them periodically. same thing - you get to hear the song but it's too annoying to burn a cd or listen to regularly

In fact quite funny, I have to say. Some enterprising person will compile a CD of promobot-only mixes and it'll become a great collector's item. Or people will leak their own promo-spoilers -- of, say, me doing "Lose Yourself" over a looped chorus of the dog in the yard next door. A concentrated effort of fake fakes would end the practice & unleash some truly terrible music on the world: everybody wins!

I've already encountered one of those fake fakes. The first time I ever sought out anything by Eminem, I ended up getting an MP3 of "Cleaning Out My Closet" with the real chorus and a different, low-budget rapper making up everything else. I remember one of the lines was "I don't condone violence - I just encourage it," which made my head hurt. I wandered around for weeks wondering what the hell everybody was so ecstatic about until I happened to catch the real song on the radio.

this can't last ... who's gonna keep a dud spoiler on their hard disk. They'll flush it off pretty soon. Unless it's interesting in it's own right.

That's the way of P2P ... filter out the crud. Eventually only the good stuff gets left. May buy a new album some time after release though, which is fair enough. A three month window where you have to buy something before it get's P2Ped.

yeh i had that thing with the original RJD2 stuff i downloaded too, a vocoded voice that went 'back again with nizzle, f'schizzle my nizzle - and i swear by the grace of christ himself...blah blah' or something - it was quite funny at first and it actually sounds alright on top of 'Smoke & Mirrors' but very weird and annoying all the same
