taking sides: ramones' "acid eaters" vs. duran duran's "thank you"

what do you think of these bands' cover albums ... they both claim the songs thereon were influences, and neither got very good reviews.

i go with thank you, because duran duran's cover of "911 Is a Joke" is like watching multiple cars crash (and an arm flying through a window).

Duran Duran's cover of White Lines is like the most nonsensical, pointless thing I've ever heard. Which makes it great, obv.

strangely, given how much i love the ramones, and how much i love 60s nuggets, it's odd that i don't rate acid eaters. naz nomad and the nitemares did it sooooo much better.

that said, thank you is utterly terrifying. this is a lesser of two evils situation and i think the ramones win. sorry...

I loved Acid Eaters in high school, and I think I am going to make myself look stupid here but I'm fairly sure it was the album that got me into them completely. Hearing a punk band do Creedence and Dylan without too much tongue-in-cheek brattiness is good stuff.

Totally have to go w/ Duran Duran here.

Such a ballsy move. I mean, who the hell was going to buy a new album of DD originals in 1995, let alone an album of covers? More importantly, they chose some great songs to cover. Not in a wack-ass Justin Timberlake bid for authenticity (to reference another thread), but what seemed like earnest regard for some really great music.

Did it succeed musically? Not really. But it was certainly more thrilling for me as a listener to pop that cd into my player. 'How will DD deal w/ THESE songs?' Whereas w/ the Ramones you pretty much knew what you were going to get. Ho-hum. It's almost like the anticipation of the album itself made it a more emotionally evolving experience and therefore more (however briefly) interesting than the Ramones just doin' thar thang.

Props for covering "Thank You", as well. Awesome Zep tune.

'Acid Eaters' is forgettable luckily, therefore better then 'Thank You' which has taken time from my life I have never been able to get back.

The orchestral/"Diamond Dogs" intro version of "The Chauefeur" (sp?) is pretty marvy as well.

I prefer The Ramones "Substitute" to the original. The version of "My Back Pages" is pretty awesome. Aside from "White Lines," I thought the rest of "Thank You" was intitially funny but ultimately forgettable.
