If I had to pick five of those records, I would select:

Calla - Scavengers
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
Isis - Oceanic
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
Xinlisupreme - Tomorrow Never Comes

And avoid the Gary Wilson record like the plague. Boring boring boring.

A Certain Ratio - Early (buy it)
Acid Mothers Temple - In C (possibly not an essential amt release. good though. get the terry riley original issue if you can)
Big Flame - Rigour 1983-1986 (bloody essential, been pondering the worth of buying this versus just tracking down the one 7" I don't have by them)
Blood Brothers - March on Electric Children (non essential. buy the first 2 antioch arrow 12"s instead, or the VSS lp)
Bowie - Low (great)
Contortions - Buy / James White - Off White re-realease (every home should have one)
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter (both good and readily available on cheap cd reissue)
Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (good)
Fad Gadget - The Best of Fad Gadget (classic)
John Fahey - The Yellow Princess (stick to early stuff like this. not a big fan of his later work)
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace, The Frightening and Wonderful World of... (of course)
Joy Division - Heart & Soul boxset (managed to get a copy cheap. well worth it for anythign you don't already have)

Matmos - A Change to Cure is A Chance to Cut (really like this)

Rocket from the Tombs - the day the earth met... (definitely)
Slits - Cut (go buy it now!)
Spacemen 3 - Playing With Fire (I've listened to this once in the past 2 years)
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (the boss album yuo can get away with owning without getting too bad a slaggin from your cool friends)
Talking Heads - Remain In Light (this and fear of music are two of the greatest records ever)
This Heat - Repeat, Health & Efficiency, Made Available (all good. made available gets the most spins in my house)
Theoretical Girls - Theoretical Girls (I've been enjoying it)
Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats (yup)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Of the ones I own:

Cabaret Voltaire - The Original Sound of Sheffield: '78/'82

Is great, really lumpy and old and unusual sounding even by the usual unusual standards.

Kid606 - down with the scene, the action packed mentalist brings you fucking jams

Brilliant title, CD not so good. 'I'm mad I am!' No, you're not.

Mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas

Brilliant title, brilliant album, brilliant brilliant. If you've ever liked any rock(or this particularly energy punk sub genre) music ever you'll love this.

Mum - Finally We Are No One

Very nice, sounds a lot like some of the background crushed velevet on Bjork's Vespertine. Prolly 'cause some of the same people did it.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have the time to go through every one of these right now, but I did mention quite a number of them in my end-of-year round-ups at http://cookham.blogspot.com if you want to peruse that.

Re: J Chance - there's a 4CD 52-track box set of the complete Chance/White/Contortions/Black works coming out next month. I will be reviewing it for Uncut.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

ACR - Early (no substitute for owning the original records from this period, but as good an overview as exists to date - buy)

Bowie - Low (buy)
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady (buy)
Cabaret Voltaire - The Original Sound of Sheffield: '78/'82 (buy)

Casino Versus Japan - Whole Numbers Play The Basics (if you like the sound of this from Marcello's and S. Reynolds' descriptions, buy - me, I think label-mate marumari does this sort of thing better)

Cassetteboy - The Parker Tapes (buy)
Clarke - Snap, Crackle & Bop (if this is the Hannett-produced one with "Beezley Street" on it, worth considering)
Nick Drake - Bryter Layter (pretty good)
El-P - Fantastic Damage (dense stuff, if you're into "challenging, difficult" etc. this is for you)
Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (buy)

The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace, The Frightening and Wonderful World of... (get both, but preferably versions with as many bonus tracks as possible - particular important with the latter, as the LP itself is just okay, but the bonus tracks, "No Bulbs" etc., are all essential)

Kid606 - down with the scene (I like this, but understand the criticisms)

Mr. Lif - I Phantom (okay - strangled a bit by its "concept", and dips in quality towards the end, but some fantastic individual moments. Overall, I preferred his other 2002 release, the EP whose title I keep forgetting. The one with "Home Of The Brave" on it. 'Emergency Rations', that's it!)

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything (buy)
The Notwist - Neon Golden (okay, nothing special)
The Roots - Phrenology (good, but not quite great)

Slowdive - Just for A Day, Souvlaki (both okay - I prefer the first 3 EPs to "Just For A Day", which at one time you could get highlights of on a CD called "Blue Day")

Stockhausen - Kontakte (buy - but NB: you can get in two formats, tape only and tape + piano and percussion. You need to hear both, but I personally prefer the version with instrumentalists)

Talking Heads - Remain In Light (buy)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Not heard a lot of those but I'd say all these are essential:
Bowie - Low
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace, The Frightening and Wonderful World of...
Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything
Spacemen 3 - Playing With Fire
Stone Roses - s/t
Talking Heads - Remain In Light

And I also really like these:
Go-Betweens - 1978 - 1990 (if you can still get it)
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter
Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown
Spacemen 3 - Perfect Prescription
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska

Can't argue with the Joy Division box set even though I've not heard it all.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

It'll cost you less to buy all of the Go-Betweens discs than it will to buy 1978-1990.

I'd never be without:
A Certain Ratio - Early
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
Go-Betweens - (any)
Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Joy Division - Heart & Soul boxset (never got around to buying it

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

"Re: J Chance - there's a 4CD 52-track box set of the complete Chance/White/Contortions/Black works coming out next month. I will be reviewing it for Uncut."

Great news, thanks Marcello.... say, if you find you really don't like it when you've reviewed it, can I have it? ;~)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The 5 most essential items:
- Bowie: Low
- Drake: 5 Leaves Left (my fave of his, not as dark and desperate as Pink Moon)
- Joy Division: Heart & Soul (plus Live at Les Bains Douches if you don't have it, an awesome incredibly intense concert)
- Montgolfier Brothers: The World Is Flat (2002's best)
- Buzzcocks: Singles Going Steady (best punk pop band in the world)

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

''Great news, thanks Marcello.... say, if you find you really don't like it when you've reviewed it, can I have it? ;~)''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

''Fushitsusha - The Caution Appears, Pathetique''

haven't got these but make sure you get the second double live alb (PSF 15/16).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

hstencil:
I also recommend wadded-up tinfoil and Martha Stewart Halloween mask.
But can't get into Brass horseshoe or Post-it notes.
Reflections of plants off glass sound intriguing. Are they shoegaze?
Who put the rama in the rama lama ding dong? Bites, however.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Who put the rama in the rama lama ding dong?

I haven't the foggiest.

What I do know is who put the mais non in 'Mah-na mah-na'. Um. No, I forgot. Never mind.
