zemko (bob), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i've always had this thing about my funeral - about being dressed in a spidey outfit and have sophie rip my masque off and go - i always knew...i always knew....it was DOOM-E ...

should i just make a cdr so i can drunk instead?

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

No! Drinking while DJing allows the brain to make otherwise impossible musical connections!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Doomie, get this [it's also reviewed in this week's NME]

Serie Noire: Dark Pop + New Beat
(Eskimo)

Amazon.co.uk

The DJ Reverend Milo Speedwagon on Kiss FM has played a few tracks - this will definately go down well at Death Disco. Obscure and cool !

info

With early 80s underground dance music unquestionably the key source of inspiration for today’s fast growing alternative new electro scene, Belgium compilation outfit Eskimo have chosen wisely on this, their latest and best yet mix CD.

Featuring a fantastic selection of underground gems from the pre-house club scenes of the early 80s, Serie Noire is a hugely listenable collection of funky, brooding, melodic dance music including John Carpenter’s cult movie soundtrack Assault on Precinct 13 and Vicious Pink’s 8:15 To Nowhere (Vicious Pink being the erstwhile backing singers on Soft Cell’s Sex Dwarf). Also adding quality are New Order frontman Bernard Summer, whose production of Section 25’s Looking From A Hilltop mixes machines with scary synths) and Sting, providing the lyrics to Will Power’s Adventure In Success life lesson.

Prog rock heroes The Alan Parsons Project also make an unexpected though welcome appearance, delivering a pure disco, electro groover (an instrumental of Mammagamma), paving the way for A Split Second’s original Ibiza anthem, Flesh which became a hit in 1987 after Balearic DJs started playing it at 33 instead of 45.

Serie Noire: Dark Pop + New Beat is a fine collection of superbly chosen underground disco records that’s both contemporary and easy on the ears. Release date is December 16.

Genre: Classic electro/disco

Track Listing:

1: LOGIC SYSTEM ‘UNIT’
2: THE POOL ‘JAMAICA RUNNING’
3: WILLPOWERS ‘ADVENTURES IN SUCCESS’
4: ALAN PARSONS PROJECT MAMMAGAMMA’
5: A SPLIT SECOND ‘FLESH’
6: SNOWY RED ‘EUROSHIMA / WARDANCE’
7: SECTION 25 ‘LOOKING FROM A HILLTOP’
8: JUMP ‘FUNKATARIUM’
9: METRO AREA ‘MIURA’
10: MY MINE ‘HYPNOTIC TANGO’
11: GRAUZONE ‘FILM2’
12: VICIOUS PINK 8:15 TO NOWHERE
13: EXCUTIVE SLACKS ‘THE BUS’:
14 JOHN CARPENTER ‘THE END’ (FROM ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13)
15: KISSING THE PINK ‘BIG MAN RESTLESS’:
16: CARLOS PERON ‘NOTHING IS TRUE, EVERYTHING IS PERMITED’
17: C CAT TRANCE ‘SHAKE THE MIND’

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh! Ooh Get her!!! Doomie who used to jump up and down about self prommotion and shameless scenesterism if I even MENTIONED my band playing or me DJ-ing, is now shamelessly self promoting.

Oh, I am going to troll this thead shamelessly. We want Bauhaus. And good Bauhaus, none of that Bela Lugosi's Dead nonsense that Alan tries to pass off.

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

no bauhaus, kate! no, nope, never! martin denny, maybe!!!

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy and I are going to bring Mask, and she is going to distract you at the bar ("Look! Kevin Shields!") while I slip it on. Mwah hah hah! Kick in the EYE!!! Oh! Oh! Oh! Kick in the EYE!!!

Oh, and make lots of facetious requests for bands I'm in, mwah hah hah.

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Suzy and I are going to bring Mask

Surely it only takes one of you to carry a Bauhaus CD, the other can carry a Mask - and then Doomie can be Zorro or Adam Ant for the nite !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Masks on the dance floor are *so* Nag Nag Nag. Wouldn't be caught dead in one at Death Disco...

and it's VINYL not a CD. Too bad the Metro record player skips like a mother, tho...

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

it's going to be in nottinghell in february....mah hahah...

hmmmm....maybe a lollies set list? now where is that lollies cd/dvd digipack single?

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

All Lollies set, mwah hah hah, that's a way to clear the dance floor. Or hideously offend Kate by doing a Happy/Fischerspooner segue like SOME DJ's on this board attempted...

What else? I can only come up with good comedy DJ requests while totally pissed.

I've eaten too much fruitcake and I feel slightly ill.

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I've eaten too much fruitcake and I feel slightly ill.

Who are you, Ralph from the Simpsons?

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

No, that would be "Miss Krebbopple, I ate my worm". I am a newly converted fruitcake eater and I had no idea of its richness.

How about Sugar Sugar by the Archies? (I'm really surprised that Nick and Suzy have both been so restrained and not ruined my cred by repeating the story that over Xmas, after several hours of nothing but Neu! and Nico, I had to go in my room and surrepticiously listen to Sugar Sugar.)

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh, nag nag nag! my favourite! i must go again soon

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

what would you play gareth?

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

well, my forthcoming non/sense (if i ever get round to it) set, would start something like this

swayzak ~ i dance alone

rising sons ~ afghan acid
mike slammer & dj red alert ~ in effect
sophie ellis bextor ~ murder on the dancefloor
clementine ~ head nodder
archigram ~ carnival
dj marky ~ carolina carol bella
bad girl ~ bad girl
ultracynic ~ nothing is forever

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i bought the ms kittn - didnt do anything for me. dodgy new wave nonsese....you know frank sinatra? he's dead. heheheheh. we sit in the vip lounge...

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugh, now I feel bad about telling my mates to come to non/sense...

(Yes, I am just avoiding giving Ed back his puter cause I know he's going to post pictures of tea!)

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The last time I was interested in doing a dj gig, the lesbian chicks who were running the theme night asked me to just write down the songs I'd play on a piece of paper. So I wrote down a good list, but I didn't make it *too good*... whaddya think, I'm gonna give away all my tricks?? Anyway they lost the paper or forgot about me or something.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth, did you write all yr tunes on little bits of ripped up paper, throw them in the air and then list them in the order in which you picked them up? ;)

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, no michael! i just picked the first songs that came into my head

in reality, i think i would play one of these sets

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugh, now I feel bad about telling my mates to come to non/sense...

is this because of my prospective sets? :(

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i need to move to london and join the bohemian set to become a dj myself. i wd open my own club and hire people on ilx who i liked. i wd call it 'danny invincible in you rock my world'.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

...and then open your first set with Des O'Connor's immortal "Dick-A-Dum-Dum (King's Road)"? ("Gotta go to Piccadilly/Gotta pick a dilly/Got a day to do it all" etc.)

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

yo, michael in london appearance=essential.

actually, looooong shot, but you dont have equinox ~ pollux (synewave) do you?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

what should my dj name be? i'm thinking dj luke cage!!!!

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

There was another dj who worked at the same bar as me on a different night; he was the same overall build with dark hair etc, but looked not that much like me. Several times people would walk up to me and start talking to me as if I were him; it was very disorienting.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

is synewave the tim taylor label gareth? i don't have it, no. i have 'planet of drums' though.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i wd love to come to that london. one day soon, hopefully.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

watch it doom-e ;-), marecello is on the money with his PiL article today on Church of Me. And one of few writers to correctly mention both Xinlisupreme and Cursor Miner in their year end round ups.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

it's just fun! gaawd...i refuse to tiptoe....im burning down the church of me! : - )

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Doomie I know you've been banging it out for months but the Tim Deluxe remix of the DJ Falcon remix of La Mouche by Cassius really is my favourite song.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i tried to convince a failed indie rock to change his name to 'Bobby Lesbian'....just rings of stardom, don't it?

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

that would be dj markzzz and spencer, obviously!

doom-e, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

If you call yourself anything but DJ Doom-e, I will be sorely disappointed. I can't even remember what my DJ name was. I think it was just DJ Masonic Boom, boringly enough. DJ DDB, that's a much better one, yeah. DJ Dirty Dronerock, I should go DJ at Sonic Mook with that name.

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever your choice make sure you put Kurt schwitters' 'Ursonate' in there. you know it makes sense.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

DJ Toog Cock.

maria b (maria b), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "dj toog cock". I have no idea what it means, but it looks funny. I would play Gracious' "heaven and hell", segued into thee long keyboard solo from Caravan's "9 feet underground" and then Yes' "Beyond and before". Probably i wd then get ejected from the building, so there's not much point in thinking of any more. Good luck Paul Doompatrol!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

All Lollies set, mwah hah hah, that's a way to clear the dance floor. Or hideously offend Kate by doing a Happy/Fischerspooner segue like SOME DJ's on this board attempted...

*Bows* and it damn nearly worked, too.

Doom-E, even though I'm on the other side of the world I'd like you to play "I Don't Rhyme No More" by The Free Association and something by Lori & The Chameleons.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

a failed indie rock

I like this concept.

ROCK: "I am igneous! And I resist the system!"

*system metamorphizes rock*

ROCK: "Woe is me!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i second the dj fontana proposal.
and you must play rockabilly all night long.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 9 January 2003 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

play some Dolly Mixture

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

hey gareth do you want your 'forthcoming nonsense set' to be next thursday. yep, thats next thursday folks! next thursday (16th), public life, free cake, free entry, gareth djing ( if he wants to) err..is this enough?

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)
