OK imagine it's the mid-80s and you're really into the Smiths and your future self from 2003 appears and tells you that in under 20 years a pair of TEENAGE RUSSIAN LESBIANS* are going to make a goth-pop version of "How Soon Is Now?" and it is going to sound FANTASTIC! What do you think?

*Hello Google!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Pop just keeps getting better and better!

Thankyou Church of Me for the tip-off on this and yes it does sound like Propaganda!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd wonder how that would be different from the original...

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 9 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Morrissey always wanted to be a Russian lesbian, anyway. Who's your favourite T.A.T.U. girl? The cute one or the not-cute one?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I was into the Smiths mid-80s + would have blown my mind (not difficult - ed).

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom what did you make of Soho's 'Hippy Chick' just out of interest?

AND, what about that abysmal cover of it as the theme to the TV show 'Charmed'??

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I cant remember what they look like Dom.

I have heard great things about the Charmed cover but never heard it - though I want to. Hippychick is great but not as great as it could have been.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I would feel vindicated that people were still listening to them in 2003, but I wouldn't feel be that interested in the cover itself, seeing as it's not my favourite song and if it was already 1988 then I would have been even less excited because the real Claudia Brücken would already have released a not very good version of a Smiths sonf=g.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd wonder why it took so long. ¥

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmmmmm....russian lesbians.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I just read Marcello's review of it and now I am excited. Horn is reborn! (bodes well for upcoming B&S)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Is HSIN shoegazing? I always thought so.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I know the Love Spit Love version.

I don't expect to like this new one.

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I have always thought HSIN is pretty meh, so I probably wouldn't have cared either way.

..but now I cannot resist goth-pop so I will probably go out looking for an mp3. What's the name of the band?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Tatu

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard this on 123sat, of all things. It's not as good as "All The Things She Said", obviously. Too much singing, for a start. I have the horrid feeling they're just going to be a more depressed version of A-Teens. Which is a losing situation for all involved.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 9 January 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom it's much better than "All The Things She Said" - the more singing in E.European accents the better and the sounds are much more ambitious.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

It just seems... lethargic. It was a live version I saw, admittedly, but it seemed too high-pitched as a backing track, and the vocals meandered all over the piece. Of course, any group of 17 year olds covering The Smiths is going to be "ambitious", but that's not a necessary leap into being goodness. Plus, they were filmed next to Trevor Horn, which can't be a good thing.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 9 January 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The flangey bit at the beginning reminds me more of the "Don't Let Me Get Me" intro than of the original "How Soon Is Now." But that's sort of perfect, isn't it?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely the key question is Tatu's goth-pop of this versus the Snake River Conspiracy's goth-pop cover of this. And frankly I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter that inspired the former. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

It's ... okay. Certainly much better than (oh shit, forgotten the name, random electroclash producer)'s version of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.'

I will look this up, but I'm reorganising my CDs and vinyl, so they're all in a pile of doom at the moment.

Tatu's version is pleasant and non-offensive, but surely it dilutes the song to be sung by a duo? (Esp. if the duo is you and your girlfriend (even your faux girlfriend))

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It's excellent. I've watched the video and it's yummy (any digital viewers watching the hits channel, which is why I'm beginning to get into these pop threads a bit more now). as marcello sez, the 'this is not enough' really drags you in. I did not notice the 'all soon is now' comparison (even now I'm surprised). only heard it a couple of times myself tho'.

my 18 year old self would have been disgusted. my 23 year old self would say 'hurrah!'.

''Certainly much better than (oh shit, forgotten the name, random electroclash producer)'s version of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.'''

are u talking abt the bloke from Tarwater?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

THIS IS FANTASTIC.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

''I did not notice the 'all soon is now' comparison (even now I'm surprised). only heard it a couple of times myself tho'.''

sorry I lost track here. I meant the single is grebt. I'll try and hear the cover.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a good album!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Which is the "not-cute" one?.

dan (dan), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Certainly much better than (oh shit, forgotten the name, random electroclash producer)'s version of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.'

Schneider TM 'The Light 3000' ?

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

From being a fence sitter wrt the song content, thanks dan for making my mind up for me. I prefer the jail bait. I mean the piano adds a certain something over the Marresque flange that cranks the angst up a notch. hehehe I said flange.

Macattack (Macattack), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

if there are fence sitters left:

dan (dan), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Wouldn't mind hearing a lesbian's opinion on the way Tatu's sexuality (or alleged sexuality) is used in marketing them.

Such a packaged pop group can't exist without a svengali, in this case former Moscow advertising executive Ivan Shapovalov. Shapovalov fashions every aspect of the group's image, including choosing outfits, scripting interviews, and informing the press that the girls insist on a double bed in their hotel rooms. He probably picked the incomprehensible spelling of the group's name as well.

Alas, there's no evidence the girls actually are lesbians and not just playing a role in order to attract male fans with a salacious gimmick. While all the group's lyrics tell of lesbian love affairs, Katina told an MTV interviewer, "Everybody thinks we are lesbians. But we just love each other.

Aaron Schatz

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

There is nothing wrong with a lesbian pop band, of course, but there's a difference between a group with integrity (say, Indigo Girls) and a disposable pop act that uses lesbianism as a come-on to attract sex-starved male fans.

But t.A.T.u. are SO MUCH BETTER than the Indigo Girls!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"30 minutes" has a Suspiria-soundtrack feel to it that is incredible. That song alone is better than the entire Indigo Girls catalog.

My co-worker Lizzie is Russian and she thinks that they are "fake lesbians". This is an extra-musical issue that has nothing to do with the work.

dan (dan), Thursday, 9 January 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

random electroclash producer)'s version of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'

That would be Schneider TM's Dirk Dresselhaus, and there's not an electroclash bone in his body.

Slightly offtopic, but was "All The Things She Said" the Simple Minds cover I'm scared it might be? (sorry, I'm in Australia, Tatu haven't hit yet)

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 9 January 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The one on our left, pretty obviously.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She's the hot one! The other one has that boring gamine thing going on.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Myself, I kind of liked all those Smiths covers done by the Ukranians.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

the Ukranians

shityeah! Their version of "Bigmouth" kicked ukulele ass!

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom is OTM, even if I disagree with him. If the one on the left was a bit hotter in the raw gypsy way she is only half way up the ladder of, then I might concede the point.

Oh dear, we are a pair of 29 year old men arguing in a pub over which 17 year old lesbian we'd do.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, delete us Graham.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Myself, I kind of liked all those Smiths covers done by the Ukranians.

Very sweet, this. I played it at Chris Barrus the other day, much to his amusement.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

get thee to this den of iniquity, the both of you, and then a brisk cold shower, i'd wager.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

It is Schnieder TM - I'd take issue with the not electroclash thing, but I'm busy today and can't be bothered to argue about it.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the charmed version sounds as if it's by the Psychedelic Furs.

I want to hear this new version now! or at least see the video

chris (chris), Friday, 10 January 2003 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The Love Spit Love version was also used in "The Craft" and is EXCELLENT. Really, I've never heard a bad version of this song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The Love Spit Love version was also used in "The Craft" and is EXCELLENT.

are you mad? That version is K-Rub. bringing it to mind reminds me that it is possible to cover the Smiths badly.

still, I like the er, sound of these Tatu girls and look forward to buying their album.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

DV is right, I thought the Love Spit Love version was just very dull and meh.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked the Quicksand version in an 'emo-when-it-rocked' vein.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

the charmed cover is better than the original

mark s (mark s), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

In the picture of them with their nighties on, the one on the right looks exactly like an airbrushed Kat from Eastenders.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

or it wz until pru "died"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

is this record in the shops yet?

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 11 January 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I get that damn NKOTB song in my head every time I see this thread.

This one's for the Smiths fans (ahh ahhh ahhhhh)
The Smiths fans of the world (ahhh ahhh ahhh)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh heh heh. Give in to the power of pop from before your time, or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)
