im in the middle.

Some, i'll even say a lot of what he did with gamble and huff was classic. But his career before and after was kitchy crap.
Still " only the strong survive" is fucking beautiful

"Theme From Taras Bulba"!!!

I wish Fred still posted here.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 January 2003 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

But his career before and after was kitchy [sic] crap.

"He Will Break Your Heart" = Curtis Mayfield wrote, produced, played guitar, sang harmony. Of a piece with the mid-1960s Impressions.

"Find Another Girl" = in a similar vein. In fact there are a whole slew of lovely Mayfield-produced tracks that are keepers.

"Make It Easy on Yourself" = template for the Walker Bros. hit., Bacharach-David emotional apocalypse

He also does a very credible version of "Moon River." That and the "Taras Bulba" are probably kitsch, but that's your hangup. "Theme from Exodus" is kitsch too but listen to what Jimmy Scott does with it.

Also: Butler also started a songwriting workshop in Chicago which produced some interesting '70s soul.

Veridict: utterly classic

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

absolute CLASSIC
for the Iceman albums alone
and there's more (especially the early tracks mentioned by Amateurist above)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

(Amateurist and naked ) sounds good dunnit?

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got one called "Ice on Ice", and it's really good; nice band sound and arrangements, good song selection.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Look im not saying he wasnt talented. Hell the man co-wrote try a little tenderness. And yes the stuff he did with mayfield was damm good( If a little too pop for my taste) And yes make it easy on yourself has a charm to it. But the bulk of his 60's stuff is too damm milquetoast for me to ignore. And when Mayfield left over a split over songwriting credit, his prescence was missed. Badly. i mean " mr dream merchant?" UGH. They put him on the came " sam cooke" forumla that they put damm near evey male soul singer besides Ray charles and James brown. And

I'll say it again he wasnt bum. He will always have a place in soul history for his singles and his " ice" albums. but we are talking about classic soul singers, the canon. Cooke, Gaye, green wonder, robinson, redding, ruffin, hathaway, mcphatter, carr and ( o.v) wright. And i will admit that the kitchy crap comment was a bit overboard. My point is that he's on that second tier of damm good soul men, like luther vandross, lenny williams, chuck jackson, alexander o'neal... each of the four had great moments, but not enough to be put in the level of the greatest of all time IMO.

Ps( is the workshop that you are talking about , the same one that had chuck stephney, the worlds most underrated soul arranger next to donny hathaway?"

robert lashley (brotherman), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoever told you he co-wrote "Try a Little Tenderness?" It was written in 1932, some years before Butler was even born.

And even had he recorded nothing else, "For Your Precious Love" alone would secure him a place in the soul pantheon. Classic.

Wrong song " Ive been loving you too long to stop now"

robert lashley (brotherman), Friday, 10 January 2003 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean for wrong song for me.

robert lashley (brotherman), Friday, 10 January 2003 05:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, same workshop as Chuck Stephney. One of Bob Prater's books on Chicago soul (I think the one called, er, Chicago Soul) goes into some detail about this workshop, whose name I'm forgetting. Jerry was an integral part of the Chicago scene and helped to jumpstart a lot of careers besides his own. (He's now a local politician.)

You obviously know a lot more about this stuff than you let on in your initial post, and it turns out I basically agree with you. Jerry's tenure on Vee-Jay (before Gamble-Huff got a hold of him) is not really one of soul's big winning streaks despite several high points.

I sort of prefer the arrangement of Elvis's "Only the Strong Survive" to that of Jerry's. The vocals are about coequal, though.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 05:43 (twenty-three years ago)

That was him ? Oh man! I didnt know he was the behind that. More power to the brother. From stephney came Maurice white ( Earth wind and fire frontman but you already know that)and minnie ripperton. I love Minnie so much. Folks who tag her for only doing " loving you" dont know a tenth of the deal. If there is ever a definition of an art soul record it's "les flurs.",The eclectic orchestral soul arrangements, her voice, and just how she just embodied deep feminine beauty just blows me the fuck away.Plus the few singles she did with the andrea true connection, the best non spector spector i have ever heard.

And her crossover stuff was damm good too. The album she did with stevie was classic, So sensual, true babymaking music. And although the rest of her stuff might be a little erratic, I cant listen to her last two album with out crying. Like she knew she was gonna go and was tying emotional loose ends, and going out with class.

robert lashley (brotherman), Friday, 10 January 2003 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

For writing and recording For Your Precious Love when still in his teens, all-time classic. I Stand Accused was another good sixties number. He's certainly not in the first rank of soul singers (though I thought your canon went downhill shockingly quickly, missing dozens if not hundreds of fine singers between rank 1 and most of rank 2, which I'd have down at about 6 or 8!), but he has a place in my heart.

nineteen years pass...

In fact there are a whole slew of lovely Mayfield-produced tracks that are keepers.

indeed! i'm having a jerry butler phase rn

budo jeru, Tuesday, 27 December 2022 04:08 (three years ago)

my ears perked up at "theme from taras bulba", since i thought there might be a janáček connection. but no, of course that's not right. it's a film score by franz waxman (of "sunset boulevard" fame, for which he won an oscar) from a '62 american adaptation (of the n. gogol story) w/ yul brynner. i was curious if the waxman score had any relation to the janáček piece but i haven't been able to find anything, although this isn't the right thread for that anyway.

the hives covered "find yourself another girl" on one of the first CDs i ever owned, back in the era of the great millennial colour drought.

I believe Dionne Warwick got angry when Burt Bacharach gave that one to Jerry instead of her.

Blind Willie Minitel (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 21 February 2025 21:23 (one year ago)

He had quite a solo career - IIRC the albums were generally good, particularly the ones owned by Mercury/UME.

Awww. Rip . Smooth, polished soul

Wow, I didn't pick up on this being about him dying because I didn't know he was still alive. "For Your Precious Love" is brilliant.

Incredible song & he just owns it - casual-committed phrasing of the lines, the way he unrolls the extended second verse after "but wait..", all the interplays with Curtis. Damn. I didn't know he was still around, so RIP. What a singer.

woof, Saturday, 22 February 2025 02:07 (one year ago)

Another great thing is that in interviews he admiited that he was often (or at least sometimes) the guy he was singing about in that song.

The two Gamble-Huff albums are great. Among the earlier solo hits, I especially love the collaborations with Curtis Mayfield. It's pretty cool how they remained tight even after Butler left the Impressions. Anyone see that reunion tour they had in the '80s? It would've been right before Butler became a Commissioner in Cook County for the next 30 years.
