Personlly, I'm-a hafta go with "The Negotiation Limerick File," although I'm tempted to say PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, as it's one continuous piece of music after all (and brilliant one at that). But....that'd be cheating.

So.....yours?

'Sure Shot'

"Alive"

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 11 January 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"B-Boy Bouilliabaise" (sp? can't be arsed to look it up). This may also be cheating.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 11 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"Boomin' Granny"

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 11 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

'Root Down'

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

tough...but I'm gonna go with "Unite"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Shake Your Rump. I do like No Sleep Til Brooklyn though as well.

Nick H, Saturday, 11 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always had a soft spot for "Sounds of Science."

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Saturday, 11 January 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna go with "Root Down" as well.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 11 January 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second the "Shake Your Rump" nod.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 11 January 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my god, "Sounds of Science" is fucking brilliant! I'm changing mine to that!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Another favourite Beastie Boy album moment, though it's not a Beastie rhyming, is Get It Together, when Q-Tip says, "Phone is ringing, oh my God."
It's stuck with me. I actually quote this at work on occasion when a phone starts ringing.
I don't think anybody at work gets the reference.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

sure shot

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

get it together

robin (robin), Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only been here maybe 2 weeks, and already have physical evidence that ILx is bad fo yo health, as they say...

in attempting to determine the relative placement of 'Do It' and 'Sure Shot' ('Tough Guy'?), my tape player (hey, it was '94) has done something very bad and now appears to be 50% operable. :(

gabbneb, Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds of science

kephm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

sure shot

DC Power Outlet (DC Power Outlet), Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree about Get It Together actually but jesus Boomin Granny is a tempting choice.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Another great Q-Tip moment on "Get It Together" is when he rhymes "I eat the fuckin' pineapple Now and Laters/so listen to me now/and listen to me later" and then immediately follows it up with something along the lines of "fuck it, I know I didn't rhyme for real". Ha!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

What does OOP stand for?

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 11 January 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Other Octogenarians' Property?
Our Oolong Purveyor?
One Ovid Poem?
Orotund Oenophile Pedants?

(I think it's supposed to be "OPO" as in "One Pick Only," but "OOP" could be the more polite "One Only Please")

gabbneb, Saturday, 11 January 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

shit...I forgot about "Netty's Girl"!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 January 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

whats the one that goes 'lookin down the barrel of a gun son of a gun son of a bitch gettin paid gettin rich' i pick that one

"So Watcha Want?"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 12 January 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey Ladies"

Burr, Sunday, 12 January 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll say "B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak," which has one of my favorite NY-specific lyrics of theirs: "I take the IRT right up to Penn Station/Penn Station! Up on Eighth Ave!"

It would be a tough call between that and "So Whatcha Want."

mike a (mike a), Sunday, 12 January 2003 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

cookie puss

, Sunday, 12 January 2003 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sabotage" over "Cookie Puss" over "Brass Monkey" over "She's Crafty" just barely.

Licensed to Ill is still their best album

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 12 January 2003 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Funky Boss

weatheringdaleson (weatheringdaleson), Sunday, 12 January 2003 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki, i believe that one would be "looking down the barrel of a gun" oddly enough ;-) i like that song a lot. cuz right after that line, in comes the mountain sample. also having a bong in the video seemed cool to me at some point, even though it probably is not

ron (ron), Sunday, 12 January 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

no it is!

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 12 January 2003 10:10 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, right on then!

ron (ron), Sunday, 12 January 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Q-Tip freestyled that verse in Get It Together didn't he?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I beleive it's "Namaste" with the monks on it...that shit melts my BRAIN with funk!

When my band first played Cincinnati, they played the last few songs off Ill Communication, and "Sabrosa" came to and end our set was about to begin. It was by far the best performance we've ever put on, and I don't question why.

Oh, and I literally do NOT know anyone who DOESN'T quote the "phone is ringin', oh my god" line whenever a phone rings. And it somehow does NOT ever get old!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 12 January 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

g.i.t.

minna (minna), Sunday, 12 January 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"Flute Loop" from the Root Down EP maybe, though I haven't heard it in a long time (sold the EP)... "Sneakin' Out the Hospital" (mostly because of Mixmaster Mike, though)... "Unite"... "Shure Shot"?

Orange, Sunday, 12 January 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"33% God" which is "Shake Your Rump" instrumental. If you have it on vinyl, pitch it up to +8 and enjoy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 12 January 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" for me too--their ultimate song in lots of ways, shouty and bombastic and great fun and rocky and hip-hoppy all at once. plus they made the Eagles sound good for once in that band's life, so you know they're doing something right.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 12 January 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought "High Plains Drifter" was the song that sampled the Eagles. But agreed with the write-up of LDtBoaG (ha ha acronyms are dumb but I gotta run here).

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 12 January 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a great b-side to the 12" of "Shadrach" called "Some Dumb Cop already sold me Two Tickets" (or something) which was basically Mike D. singing through a vocoder (or something) that makes him sound a bit like a drunk Barry White spinning a yarn about doin' his woman wrong to a Milli Vanilli sorta backing, the chorus being: "Girl You Know it's True - Mike D. is In Love with You".

Classic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 13 January 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure Shot.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 January 2003 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

that mash-up of 'intergalactic' with alan braxe's 'vertigo'. you can keep the rest.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 13 January 2003 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"sabotage", mostly thanx to the video. i used to watch that video obsessively.

geeta, Monday, 13 January 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael is Vertigo just a pounding french house loop basically? My friend played a version of intergalactic on Saturday and I thought it was the Daft Punk remix I'd heard of somewhere but maybe it's that.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 13 January 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, sounds like it. like a typically french looped filtered flash or something.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 13 January 2003 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah that's the one, it is very good.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 13 January 2003 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man, this is a hard one...

Shake Your Rump. By a whisker.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 13 January 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
get it together. by a mile.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

toss-up between "Some Dumb Cop Gave Me Two Tickets Already" and "Rock Hard"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that middle bit of B-Boy Bouillabaise is now my favourite - can you believe i only heard it properly for the first time just the other day???!!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Which "middle bit"? "A Year And A Day"? Because OH DAMN

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the name of the segment in "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" where Adam Yauch is freestyling on over the "Who's That Lady?" riff?

Oh, my pick is "The Sounds of Science."

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Why would anyone pick "Alive?"

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That's "A Year and a Day".

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Shambala"

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone know the name of the track this loop is based around? Some late 60s soul song, I think. What a great piano bit.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Unite"

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

get it together. by a mile.

then why is the instrumental that follows it at least twice as good? (yes, the "oh my god" line is classic, lexiconic, blah blah)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

For its tone and lyrics - "The Scoop"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)
