So what've they missed out? And what do you think of the once mighty but now kinda drippy TFC?

Me, I hope I die in December so I can get "December" played at my funeral.

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

They should have all of "The King" on that record.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

They should have all of "The King" on that record.

Certainly, it'd be great to have a second CD with initial copies containing The King in its entirety, yes. Or d'you mean, instead of the above tracklisting?! Hee!

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Alcoholiday should be on there for sure, maybe Fear of Flying.

And more of A Catholic Education, when they were all handclaps and guitar solos, like a more righteous Wedding Present.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

No Discolite? Totally fuckin' dud.

Mil, Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

point of order - I can't *quite* tell if the official tracklisting is actually made up pureely of singles, or if it's a mixture of singles and cherry-picked album highlights - thoughts?

Either way, I'm sure I'll be buying it.

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

is it considered bad form to ask
what the one that
goes 'hey everybody, hey everybody' is
called and if it's on,
and if not why ?

piscesboy, Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't really argue with that tracklist at all, especially given the embarrassment of riches there is to choose from. And can I take this opportunity to say that the implication Teenage Fanclub became lightweight later in their career is pure B.S.? A lack of distortion and aggression does not equal a lack of verve or nerve. God bless TFC!

Michael White, Monday, 13 January 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

There's no "God Knows It's True", which is an odd omission.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 13 January 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

What about the De La Soul collaboration for Judgement Night? That was hot. Perhaps Teeneage Fanclub didn't actually do much on that track. I've wondered to the extent of Teenage Fanclub's involvement in that collaboration. I want to believe both groups got along real well, like Mariah and Boys II Men in the studio.

theodore fogelsanger, Monday, 13 January 2003 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, while we're on the subject of TFC, I was reading the inlay to the O Brother Where Art Thou? CD yesterday and it seems one "Norman Blake" is all over the album - is it the same one? I guess it's not out of the question...

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 13 January 2003 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Different Norman Blake.
I'm guessing the Norman Blake on the OBWAT soundtrack is the same Norman Blake who played with the Foggy Mountain Boys, Bob Dylan and John Hartford. Fantastic guitar player grounded in the bluegrass tradition. Rounder recently released a best of compilation of his solo work called "Old Ties."

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 13 January 2003 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oh. thanks. Bruce, you ever been to/lived in England?

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 13 January 2003 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I still love Teenage Fanclub, but seriously? I hate this tracklisting.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 13 January 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie,
I was born in Scotland but emigrated to Canada when I was 10.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 13 January 2003 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry to pry, it's just i went to school with someone with the same name as you...just wondered if you were, er, him!

Nicole, why do you hate the tracklisting? I reckon it serves the best of's purpose very well, ie. it gives a realistic and largely flattering overview of the band's career (spot on re GKIT, tho Jim).

Just don't. start. me. on the whole non-chronological track order thing...that's one troll that should NEVAH be fed.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 13 January 2003 05:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Piscesboy: The 'Hey Everybody' song is Kickabout, b-side of 'Ain't That Enough', I think.... It's a sample of American Spring's version of 'Everybody' by Tommy Roe. But you knew that already.

Dunno why it's not on the LP; I don't suppose music gets much better than a best of TFC.

harveyw (harveyw), Monday, 13 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe there is no Alcoholiday on there! Or Everybody's Fool or Every Picture That I Paint or Critical Mass or Norman 3. I've not heard a Teenage Fanclub album since Thirteen though.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 13 January 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

One fine TFC song not included (tho hardly surprisingly) - "Some People Try To Fuck With You" with its grebt toy organ (?) solo.

Not a good tracklisting - a straight singles comp would have been better - where is "Norman 3"???

Tom (Groke), Monday, 13 January 2003 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

where the hell is December? or for that matter God knows it's true?

I'll still buy it though

chris (chris), Monday, 13 January 2003 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll still buy it though

and theeeere's the money shot!

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 13 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't buy it.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 13 January 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Certainly, it'd be great to have a second CD with initial copies containing The King in its entirety, yes.

yeah. The King is a good laugh. Total riffola action, AND a cover of Interstellar Overdrive. Nice.

Or d'you mean, instead of the above tracklisting?! Hee!

No.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 13 January 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the echo the can't believeness of not having Every Picture that I Paint also, So Far Gone should be there as well.

Stephen Burrows (steveeeeeeeee), Monday, 13 January 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame they missed "Verisimilitude". beautiful track, that. And if you have "...not heard a Teenage Fanclub album since Thirteen though." you owe it to yourself to find all the others. they are one of the greatest bands of our time.

I remember Spin typing a regret that they gave Album of the Year '92 to Bandwagonesque and not to Nevermind. They wrote it up as a "what were we thinking?" sort of regret. I haven't picked up Spin since.

Winslow (winslow), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

verisimilitude is not a fanclub classic. "start again" is. as are "alcoholiday" and "say no". looks like a stupendous comp, though. i'm seeing them live on 29th jan. can't wait.

"I've not heard a Teenage Fanclub album since Thirteen though."

songs from northern britain and (particularly) grand prix must be got.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I suspect that there will be a limited edition 2CD version of it - certainly when it was scheduled for release last autumn there were rumours of a 2nd CD, though god knows what's on it. Maybe their website might help?

As to track listing, it should have "Alcoholiday", "God knows it's true" and (for God's sake it's their finest moment) "Broken" on it, and get rid of "Hang on". And no space for "Long shot"? Shame! 8-)

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 13 January 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

And lets not forget the lovely version of everything flows on the "teenage fanclub have lost it" 7-inch -my favourite thing by them...

Conor (Conor), Monday, 13 January 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole, why do you hate the tracklisting? I reckon it serves the best of's purpose very well, ie. it gives a realistic and largely flattering overview of the band's career (spot on re GKIT, tho Jim).

Oh, I just don't think that that really represents all that is great and good about TFC. A lot of the earlier stuff that I would liked was missing (like Everybody's Fool for instance), and how can it be called a "Best of" without December. I shouldn't be too hard on them though, I usually am unsatisfied by most Best Ofs.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 13 January 2003 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Just wanted to add that all 3 new songs are fantabolous. Makes me anxious for a new cd.
