"Have you noticed how every great song has a saxophone solo in it?"
My friend's brother when he was about 13.

Also, one of my friends told me to stop listening to Straight To Hell by The Clash because it sounded "religious".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I get the "but every great song DOES have a saxophone solo in it!!!!!!!" wackiness out of the way before some clown says it for real.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

That home taping was killing it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That the Neptunes working with Britney and Justin gave the year an anything could happen feeling.

No, wait, that was Ronan a week ago.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew next time I see you we'll have this out the only way it can possibly be resolved, with fishhooks and nets in a large arena full of baying supporters. "400 quatloos on the newcomer"

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I like all music except reggae/heavy metal/John Travolta and Olivia Newton John*

(*delete as appropriate)

heh, this applies to me as a kid also btw

zebedee, Friday, 17 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I distrust the nautical theme to your challenge.

It only really annoyed me because they're >thisfar< apart to start with. Something like Wyclef Jean producing Mick Jagger or Tom Jones would make for a better example. Or the Neptunes/Garbage or Timbaland remicing Limp Biskit.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe not miles apart musically but in terms of credibility and respect from snob types they are a good bit apart and it did bring about a change, I mean just look at Justin Timberlake!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"after a rock craze, the next prevalent trend is always 'something soulful', aaaaaalwayz y'kno!"

(...i wasn't exactly a 'kid' when i heard it, but...)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

"Disco is dead; rock is rolling."

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

??? Which snob types?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"Christopher Cross is awesome!"

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

pop haterz.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The main problem Ronan was that the Neptunes worked with her last year too. Plus nobody's really been saying wow Britneys great now she's working with them (and theyd be stupid to).

Tom (Groke), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard people say "that new Britney song" is great. I agree it's stupid but it's less stupid than "all pop songs are crap".

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I also think that quote looks alot worse when isolated from the rest of the post. maybe clutching at straws, maybe not.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont think it is - it's a two-wrongs-dont-make-a-right thing. Two lazy positions ("Trendy producers are always great"; "Pop songs are always bad") clashing to produce a doubly lazy outcome.

On the other hand I get your meaning absolutely but then I think 2002 was that kind of year.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

well 'I'm A Slave 4 U' was the first Britney track that I liked by her. maybe i can't justify that in words (esp. as the Neptunes trick didnt work for me with a lot of actual hip hop/urban acts before they worked with britney) but who cares...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

but i should point out i'd stopped thinking Britney was just shit after she did 'Crazy' live at the MTV Awards way before...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I kind of see your point in a way, also it lacks the courage of ones convictions to do the "oh its a trendy producer thing". I still think there's some chance of convincing people they don't just like the thing cos of the producer, or maybe they eventually realise this themselves.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Well they might only like it because of the producer, thats not stupid. Its saying "X is good ON PRINCIPLE and Y is bad ON PRINCIPLE" and the former does tend to happen with producers a lot and the latter with pop stars.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"Turn it down!"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"Why would anyone want to listen to anything other than dance music?"

christoff (christoff), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"Peter Cetera, he rocks."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing really, people were a lot smarter when I was a kid

dave q, Friday, 17 January 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"I hate all that black-people music."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How about...

DISCO SUCKS??

Sean (Sean), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"stock, aitken and waterman are killing music"

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"You should get some blues records, man...now that's real music. Also, u r all gay."

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"X crappy band are gonna be the next U2"

Dear God they're still saying it. Kill me now.

tigerclawskank, Friday, 17 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"You'll grow out of pop music and you'll be sorry you spent all that money."

(still might happen though!)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad used to say "Everybody knows the 3 best albums ever made are 'Sgt Pepper', 'Music of my mind' by Stevie Wonder and 'The Sound of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel"

And they weren't even his favourite records - he genuinely believed that was the cultural consensus.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

there was the consensus "i give it two years" on house music, too.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean just look at Justin Timberlake!

Can I opt out of that choice?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"You'll grow out of pop music and you'll be sorry you spent all that money."

I got that as well, in the form of "it's just another fad - you'll grow out of it".

To be fair to my folks, I did have a long succession of fads when I was a kid, from football programme collecting to Top Trumps, but spending all my spare money on music is still going strong 22 years after 'The Very Best of David Bowie'.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah if you think the "it's just a fad" thing is bad try telling your parents you want to write about music for a living! It's like trying to teach yourself latin with a seesaw.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

"Nobody will remember these lyrics in twenty years time"

Yeah, like the pop from the sixties and seventies all had such great lyrics

mms (mms), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

we will remember the pop lyrics of today thanks to the I Love .... docu series, thank heaven

stevem (blueski), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Turn that off and put some music on" (or something liket that)--said by a high school music teacher when I was playing a tape (admitedly lo-fi) of Philip Glass on the music room's sound system.

"Ha ha. . . Fred Frith," said by fellow students after I played some Fred Frith in music class.

"Only queers like [my name] listen to new wave." (Written on one copy of a music survey I handed out in high school as part of a school project."

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 17 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

"Jimi Hendrix is just a dumb nigger who played guitar." Also said by someone in high school.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 17 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

--You haven't heard the Van Halen cover of 'Pretty Woman'? You're out of it.
--Have you heard of the band X?
--No.

Rckist Scientist, Friday, 17 January 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember an interview in some mid-80s music technology magazine with
Muff (Steve's brother and A&R Person) Winwood where he said words to this effect :

"If you're working on your own in your bedroom, you aren't a genius. Real genius goes out and plays gigs."

phil jones (interstar), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

MUFF WINWOOD???????!?!!???

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

hehehe. Hi I'm Muff Winwood.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"The school fire alarm sounds like 'Purple Haze'!"

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

MUFF WINWOOD???????!?!!???

I categorically *refuse* to believe you have never seen this man's name before.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Jon Spencer has a sister (maybe half-sister) named Muffin. She's got a pretty cool band called BRASSY.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

If you play Stairway to Heaven backward you can hear the words "Satan depostited 20 ounces of semen down Rod Stewart's esophagus".

Paula G., Friday, 17 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, "these rappers are just mindless, talentless monkeys shouting over a load of noise", "Freddie Murcury is really talented, too bad he's a dirty shitstabber" : my ex-boss who I still want to fucking kill.

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

(Not about music, but related to music) "I don't care *what* color you feel like on the inside. You're not wearing all black to Thanksgiving."

Paula G., Friday, 17 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"I like their older stuff, but BOY HAVE THEY GONE POP recently."

jot eff pe, Friday, 17 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

"that's not music it's just NOISE!"

g (graysonlane), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

adn then my mom literally tried to snatch that die kreuzen record and destroy it (i stopped her of course)...

g (graysonlane), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

well, this kid was a freshman, and drunk, but does anything excuse "come on, is there really a better album from the 80s than joshua tree." and i was trying to recruit him for my band

brains (cerybut), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Parents looking at my record collection: "You can't possibly listen to all those records."

nickn (nickn), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"How can you listen to music that's so depressing?"
-my dad, upon hearing the Undertones Hypnotised blaring from my room

mike a (mike a), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"How can you listen to music that's so depressing?"
-my mom, when I tried to play her the Flying Burrito Brothers on a car trip

mike a (mike a), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Interestingly, my parents did NOT say this when I was listening to, say, Black Flag or Dead Kennedys or Wire's 154.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"What are you listening to?"
"Bad Religion."
"I've never heard them on the radio before; they must suck."

(Change the second line as appropriate.)

Ian Johnson, Friday, 17 January 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey, Devo! I'll kick your ass!"
-various high school classmates, 1980-1983 or so

mike a (mike a), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"Apparently that guy from Soft Cell got taken to hospital and they pumped his stomach, the doctors found three pints of semen."

Worse still, I believed this.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah every one knows it wz the guy from [insert every other bandname here]

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Parents looking at my record collection: "You can't possibly listen to all those records."

I get this from everybody. But understandably.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

''Can I get the "but every great song DOES have a saxophone solo in it!!!!!!!" wackiness out of the way before some clown says it for real.''
