URGENT AND KEY: I make my broadcasting debut next Tuesday! Need ideas, people!

I have been given the Clear Spot slot on Resonance FM next Tuesday evening - 7-8:30 pm! To do what I like with!

I plan to give an illustrated talk based on one of my Church of Me pieces - so I'm putting it to the vote! Which CoM highlight would you like to hear on air (with plenty of music, provided I can work out all the technical wotsits)?

Also this means that alas I cannot do that mark s/doomie meet-up - unless you'd like to come along and make it a threesome zoo format kind of thing? Might be fun...

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 17 January 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Trina (cos I thought the piece was amazing and you referenced so much other music I love). Alternatively My House In Montmartre (cos I love the album and enjoyed the piece).

The Trina piece was my favourite thing of yours I've read btw. Not sure if anyone else will vote for it but we'll see.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The 'perfect chord' Vaughan Williams piece from this week would certainly be good.

What's the frequency of Resonance FM and what areas does it broadcast over?

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

3-way doomie/mark s/Chingford Tor Ascender chaos! 3-way doomie/mark s/Chingford Tor Ascender chaos! 3-way doomie/mark s/Chingford Tor Ascender chaos! 3-way doomie/mark s/Chingford Tor Ascender chaos!

Jeff W, Friday, 17 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations!

No chance of Chingford Tor Ascender getting a guest spot I suppose? I bet he'd like Trina too.

I think the branchings-out into film and literature on CoM this week have been top-notch - how about the Buffy Musical? I'm sure you'd have good things to say about it and yr Buffy piece on CoM was a highlight - and it might wrongfoot Resonance's listeners (if that's not what you want then a good idea wd be to give something obscure wider exposure - Carla Bley perhaps)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

congratulations Marcello !

Another new Resonance104.4fm show, starting next week:

THE WIRE MAGAZINE PRESENTS ADVENTURES IN MODERN MUSIC

Electronic music, avant rock, dub, HipHop, new jazz, noise, Improv, modern composition, traditional musics and beyond.

Adventures In Modern Music: Thursdays from 23 January, going out between 9:30-11pm GMT, broadcasting across central London on 104.4 FM, and streamed live at resonancefm.com

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

At the moment I'm thinking of doing something along the line of "feminisation of noise" and will definitely be including carla b, buffy the musical and possibly tweet and/or trina, as well as things like ornette, mbv, amm and what have you. Probably end up a condensement of several CoM pieces.

In view of this I think I will definitely need to come to the FAP meet-up tomorrow 'cos I need to talk to mark s for some advice, etc. plus I need to catch up with him generally. So I'll try to get there for about seven.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 17 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Challenge those arty-feminist-leftwing resonance listeners! Give 'em 90 minutes of Trina and homophobic dancehall with a searing insight into the 'punctum' of each. Say I.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

congrats!

If I had caught this thread the moment you posted it I would say play some of those stockhausen LPs you have and link his innovations with contemporary stuff: making an avant garde-pop bridge really.

but whatever it is I'm sure it will be good (def play carla bley).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, a serious answer if you're still in the market would be the Houllebecq piece illustrated unexpectedly in music in that great CoM way (but not with one of his own records, they're rub).

Jeff W, Friday, 17 January 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

blimey he's actually made records! what are they like stylistically? i would expect substandard serge g...

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 17 January 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

watch out, Marcello - you may grow to love this!! :-)
i mean, a radio format which allows you to play absolutely anything you deem worthy - this ain't any less addictive than... ILM, say
(and i do know what i'm talking about (more about this sort of radio situation than 'bout ILM, actually))

i think you can't go wrong with any mix you'd like to do of your CoM pieces, with some Buffy sampling thrown in. and if there'll be next times after this, you could deal with any separate theme at greater length

good luck!
and keep a cup o' coffee handy when the mic's off

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i would expect substandard serge g
yeah, sort of in that vein, but you can listen for yourself online

Jeff W, Friday, 17 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Resonance is EXCELLENT and is run by my first-ever British flatmate, Magz. Went on there this week to do arts listings for them; week before Nick did a live session so it's like an ILX annex at the moment.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

could you get the Res FM morning show to take requests? "I'd like to hear a bit of distant skylark and tractor with ambient hedgerow noises please, Mark" "well it just so happens i have that cued up next with an intermittent anonymous shrill sound" etc

Alan (Alan), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

congratulations! just got your email, marcello. re: meeting up there - dunno - it's yer moment to shine, baby and mark s and i will end up playing kris kristofferson to yer barbara streisand! but it's up to mark s.
PLAY THE SHAGGS! OR YMA SUMAC - arguably - the first fem noisters.

-- doom-e (orangecrushnapal...), January 17th, 2003.

(in my 'citement for you i posted to the wrong thread)

doom-e, Friday, 17 January 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

good luck Marcello.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

play the forbidden planet soundtrack!!!!

doom-e, Friday, 17 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

also, general request: if any london posters have a spare c90 handy, would someone be able to tape the show for me pls? thanks!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 17 January 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Radio is a good and fun medium to do strange things with -- yer general idea sounds good! Bring more than you can actually play and then let the moments seize as they do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget taTu. Play something off of "Rid Of Me", and some Joan Jett. Good luck and have fun.

dan (dan), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Play T'Pau

the pinefox, Friday, 17 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

play 'Til Tuesday!

Aaron A., Friday, 17 January 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim Wilde is a must.

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Bow Wow Wow, maybe?

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Can someone tape the show for me, some London ilxor? Congratulations Marcello. The first American Trilogy would be my suggestion, as being a highlight, but The Feminisation of Noise sounds equally brilliant.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"revolutionary"? - hardly.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

way to go, Marcello!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool beans! I'd listen, but I'm going to be... erm... SOUNDCHECKING at that very moment.

kate, Friday, 17 January 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Well done Marcello! I'll try and tape it, if people remind me.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 18 January 2003 09:23 (twenty-three years ago)

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations Marcello! I really liked the Human League piece you did recently on CoM, maybe you could work that in -- who doesn't love a little Human League?

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Typically, having now come up with a final playlist, complete with timings etc., there will only be the space for about a tenth of what I had planned. So no androgynous male singers - I will leave that for another programme, in the unlikely event that I get one. As it has panned out, the first half will be not so populist, the second half more so.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 20 January 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Just bringing this back up to the top of New Answers for yet more shameless spamming to remind you all that I will be on the air in approx. 2 1/2 hours' time. Hope someone manages to tape it ('cos my mum wants a copy). Dreading it!! Transcript of the whole thing will be on CoM tomorrow.

If I am not reduced to a nervous wreck after the show's over I will try and look in at the Windmill on my way home, but otherwise I might stay on the 159 and sneak into bed early.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

what is the frequency?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

good luck marcello!! break a leg (or whatever the appropriate blessing/limb is in radio)!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

*(ph34r my capacity to fk up taping stuff however)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I've tuned in - well I think I've tuned in, they've just finished talking about Disco Tex and they're now playing Angus Maclise. My radio is super-crackly which adds to the ambience but is probably no good for taping :(

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Bollocks - I've only just seen this thread, and now that I've moved to the outer shores of SE London I can't seem to pick up Resonance either - but congrats anyway Marcello, sure hope somebody preserves this one - at the very least, I hope we get to see the playlist - Carla B a must, and Linda Sharrock, and Annette Peacock: Church of Me regulars all.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

There are big shout outs going out to the Old Kent Road and New Cross - I don't think I'm in Resokansas anymore.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

reminder anyone can listen - it's broadcasted via the web as well.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Punctum! I know! What a thrill!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

(Is it just my connection or does his voice keep going all Metal Mickey?)

Can we get Radio 3 to let Marcello host 'Mixing It'?

DavidM (DavidM), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Wah! I missed the punctum reference, I was helping a professor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

''(Is it just my connection or does his voice keep going all Metal Mickey?)''

it sounds fine from here. I'm listening to this on the radio in an empty office in central london tho'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I am waiting to hear how drum and bass was invented. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"You're fanny's like two sperm whales floating down the Seine". Did Fontella just sing that? Awesome!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

don't know, tried to look the lyrics on the web but couldn't find anything from a quick look. fontella has a damn fine voice tho'. and those juicy time signatrures...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

james chance at the moment: not work safe, kids. hope no one comes in.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

""You're fanny's like two sperm whales floating down the Seine". Did Fontella just sing that?""

I heard that too.

Well, it beats the Evening Session...

DavidM (DavidM), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

he's playing MBV now. are u listening ned?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

'Only Shallow' sounds utterly ridiculous through my tiny, weedy computer speakers.

DavidM (DavidM), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Just came back from grabbing lunch. He's still on the air? I thought it was just for the hour, cool.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I FUCKING LOVE THIS MBV SONG.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

As well you should.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The follow-up song is something of a letdown. I'm glad I don't live in the proposed alternate universe where this was a #1, as that would be an unbearbly twee universe. (How can you make blatant filth sound so slapworthy?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"they got the mustard out!!"

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

soundtrack to buffy! yay!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

This damned computer will not let me stream... bastaaaad...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh. Good on him for the Buffy choice -- my feelings on that are radically different, of course, but that's a nice and dare I say very ILX way to end it. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

the show's getting over...no fair!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The follow-up song is something of a letdown.

I really liked it. What was it? Who was it by?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello should be able to tell us when he gets back.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure he will!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

damn, I only caught the last ten minutes. anyway good job Marcello, I can't wait to read the whole thing.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The followup song? He said it was a Kevin Blechdom song, "Mr [something]".

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Mentality Towers watched The World Is Not Enough with the sound down while Marcello broadcast - v fitting.

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I'd heard this all the way through (missed the middle) but some great stuff. Looking forward to catching up on the bits I missed. Well done Marcello.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

bollocks,i fell asleep at seven last night and only just woke up,i was planning on listening in...
is there anyone who would be able to put the show up in streaming real audio or something?
marcello, are you going to be given more shows or was it a once off?

robin (robin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

*signs on at work computer which has been down half the morning grrr!*

Blimey, if I'd known there was going to be live commentary I would have logged on!

Thanks for all the comments. Reactions in the Resonance studio: wonderful female engineer had jaw agape (in a good way) all through the programme, spontaneous round of applause at the end from distinguished Wire inhabitants of studio including Mike Barnes and Edwin Pouncey; no one could believe it was my first time in a studio; more shows I think are definite, but I'll have to speak to Ed Baxter as regards when and how.

Nervous as hell at the beginning, took me a while to warm up, but as with anything, got considerably easier once I settled in. Over the moon at how it went down of course.

I will post the orig script/tracklisting for the prog on CoM today. A couple of tracks I had to miss out because of lack of time, but I think it went more than OK.

(PS: sadly I didn't make it to the Windmill; I hung around the studio for a bit after the show and by the time I reached Brixton it was half-nine and bucketing down with rain, so I'm afraid I went straight to bed, but Kate I hope the gig went OK)

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi, what was that song you played at around 7:50 pm? You introduced it as a sort of drum'n'bass pioneer thing. I liked it.

Good show!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Blimey, if I'd known there was going to be live commentary I would have logged on!

Marcello, you underestimate the support of the ILM massive !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Marcello for the Buffy moment (and the wonderful moment of PUNCTUM), I'll be tuning in again! When's yr next show! Get it sorted!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

transcripts and playlists now up on CoM.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

your voice sounded really good on air, Marcello.
and the selection of music was great (didn't expect anything less)
and if i think of how the program sounded overall, then - purely in descriptive terms, to my ears - it was actually 'very bbc'
... my real audio didn't exactly 'stream' all the time, there were a few disruptions, so i missed some parts, but - did you at any point mix two (or more) pieces of music together (one after the other,ie)? or was it all the way through: text> musical example > text > example, etc?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

no it was strictly text/music/text etc. i might try my hand at mixing next time (if there is a next time) but i don't like leaving the listener alone for too long - i enjoy talking to them hah!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 23 January 2003 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

"... but i don't like leaving the listener alone for too long - i enjoy talking to them hah! "

well, that part i did, and do, understand ;-)
what i was implying (re 'mixing' e.g.) was that on top of having a good, pertinent text there're some more ways to have serious fun - while *composing* (and also 'performing') one's radio show

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

This all sounds FANTASTIC. Well done Marcello, and well done the live commentaires re the second part of this thread!

Jeff W, Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)
