Travis

OK So I'm an American studying in England for a semester (I leave in 3 days). My favorite band, the Scots of Travis, are apparently very uncool (cos of they're disgusting popularity) in Britain. Is this true?

Also, are there any other bands I should be wary of mentioning?

Thanks!

You should probably keep your Coldplay tattoos covered up too.

Ha! Thanks. No Radiohead either?

Pam, Saturday, 18 January 2003 08:11 (twenty-three years ago)

travis r uncool, yes, but not if u sing, si-i-ing sing. sing. sing, sing, sing.

radiohead are neither very cool or very uncool. mention them at will.

the coolest band of all is the scots of del amitri, and the girlies swoon for toploader

Hey, don't listen to the H4t3rz. If you love something, feel free to love something - cool is a concept which should be erradicated from the face of the earth. Real Cool is just Not Caring, not slavish devotion to some canon.

I am an unrepentant Travis lover. I make no apologies. Travis are the pot noodle of music, they sound a little bit like other bands, like pot noodle is flavoured a little bit like other foods, but when you're feeling unhappy they cheer you up like nothing else. They comfort me.

And they are dead lovely, dead nice, dead charming folk as well. I will hear no bad things said about Travis.

Your taste in music will change as you learn to live in the UK, because things that you loved for anglophile value will no longer have the same appeal when you learn that yes, England can be a bit rubbish, too. If you're lucky, you'll meet the idiots that generate the trends and the arbiters of cool, realise how random and silly it is, and learn to love things for your own worth.

But don't feel bad about liking Travis. I've revived our Travis cover for the solo gig on Tuesday. With jungle drumbreaks and everything.

Heh heh. I actually managed to succeed in getting Travis stuck in Ed's head. Tee hee hee!

I've yet to seek comfort in a pot noodle. It sounds like quite the experience.

A curry flavoured Pot Noodle is possibly the least comforting foodstuff I can imagine at this moment in time.

I have no opinions on Travis whatsoever.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 18 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh. I liked the songs off The Man Who but when The Invisible Band came out, I started to find them really annoying. (I'm only two years behind the rest of the world!)

The first Travis song I heard, "All I Wanna Do is Rock," is still my favorite.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 18 January 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Kenny is OTM, btw- The Man Who is a good album; The Invisible Band is primairly a Nigel Goldrich album and, as such, crap.

i find travis dreadfully boring, but that doesn't mean i hate them. they remind me of some lovely people that i don't see enough of anymore, just because we all used to sit on the couch drinking and watching juice when it was free-to-air... ahhh. positive associations. yeah, what kate said, who cares whats cool.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 19 January 2003 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i love the first album and most of the second but Invisible Band pushed things a little too far for me. But "Funny Thing" and "Coming Around" remain excellent songs in my opinion.

Travis are pretty dull and uninspired even for a British flavour-of-the-week band. I can't even stay interested long enough to work up a good hate towards them. Coldplay too.

Julien S. (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 20 January 2003 07:12 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...
New Travis album is really gorgeous - maybe as good as Invisible Band was (one of my favorite albums) and the new single, "Closer," is just as good as "Flowers in the Window" or "Sing." I'm so thrilled. I was really disappointed with 12 Memories or whatever the last one was called. And this is just really pretty, mellow stuff.

When I saw this I thought Geir had done another poll.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

Haha. Poll: Best Travis album?

Mordechai Shinefield, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

Now, they have released four albums. And nobody who isn't a mentalist will vote for the first or the forth. So... ;)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 28 April 2007 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

Hey I am listening to this song called "All I Wanna Do Is Rock" and its actually kind of good. Does this mean I am officially a dad?

i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Saturday, 28 April 2012 04:52 (fourteen years ago)

i ride for at least half a dozen travis songs. 'funny thing' from the first album and 'coming around' are both really great songs.
