Bands that should have fired their vocalists long ago and gone instrumental

Dream Theater, most definitely. Their lyrics are bad enough on their own, but their vocalist somehow finds a way to make them worse. Excellent instrumental work, though.

they should fire their lyricists, not singers.

Ha ha! I was listening to XTRMNTR yesterday and thinking "man if 'Accelerator' was the only track on here with vocals this would be fucking ace" (and indeed the instrumental tracks were vry good, esp. "Blood Money"- ho-lee shit!). Oh well. Anyone know where I can get an instrumental of "Pills"?

PRML SCRM without Gllsp, U2 sans all members except maybe the Edge, Fugazi done instrumental, the Smiths, PiL (ha ha ha)

The vocals were one of Liars' redeeming qualities, I thought.

I heard some of The Argument today. It seems like an improvement on their last few albums but I can totally understand why people would want the vocals changed. They do really seem to detract most of the time, especially when they're trying to be more mellow. Ian MacKaye's barking isn't so bad. I don't know if that's the main problem though. They always sound interesting and often have a lot of good qualities but I don't get into a lot of their stuff in any real way. Judging by the instrumental tracks they have done, though, I don't think Fugazi would be a good instrumental band.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 19 January 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually really like the vocals a lot on The Argument (part of the reason why, I think, is because it features fewer vocals by I.M. and much more by G.P. and others). Plus, those random female backing vocals they threw into the mix don't hurt any.

geeta, Sunday, 19 January 2003 06:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say the Doors, except that they turned out to be even worse without old Jim.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

After seeing Instrument, I think Fugazi make a wonderful instrumental band. However, I love the sound of Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye's voices too much to wish they weren't there. I just wish their lyrics made a little more sense.

Totally down with Geeta about the female backing vocals. "Full Disclosure" and "Life And Limb" might be my fave songs on the album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 19 January 2003 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

galaxie 500 should have been an instrumental group.

No way, Blasphemy had a great vocalist!

Anyway, Dream Theater is a good one. But, lots more: Confessor, Cradle of Filth, 2 Unlimited and (drumroll) The fucking Smiths.

Dinosaur Jr. Sepultura. So spot on for The Smiths drop. Bob Dylan.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Nate - there actually IS an instrumental version of Pills. It kicks the original's botty, for obvious reasons.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Right on with Primal Scream. A lot of their tracks need either a different vocalist or none at all.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 20 January 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The Music. I do go on about this, but their instrumentals are stunning.
