"I'm Losing My Touch" - the new stones song: C or D

just heard it yesterday in a bookstore, after reading "the stones song you've bveen waiting for" reviews in various rags

- a frail keith-voiced autobiographical ballad that's a little like "you got the silver" in sound but not quite, and a little like an update of "before they make me run" in spirit, actually maybe closest to his duet w/ tom waits - "That Feel" - but now doubtful of that song's sentiment
- great line about picking up his passport
- a whole album of this would grate, but pretty fucking great standing on its own in the context of The Greatest Hits package, kind of cool to make the only new song in the pigpile of familiar hits an admission of self-doubt
- a little like the other self-consciously classy old man records of late like Lanois-produced Dylan or Cash's American records... a little funereal at worst or antiques roadshow at best ("this is a lovely old chair and you've stained the wood to show off the nicks and cracks so effectively")

I like it

Ain't it funny how things happen
Just as we think we've got it all straight
Everything seems to be moving forward
But instead we just sit around and wait

Seems things are in a lockdown
Nervous looks all around
Everyone is speaking in whispers
No one wants to make a sound

I'm losing my touch, yeah
Losing my touch
Losing my touch baby, way too much
Baby, get me out of here
It should be clear

Keep an eye on on your front door, baby
I'll be slipping in round the back
I just need a little, a little cab fare
And then I'll let you hit the sack

'Cause I'm losing my touch
Losing my touch
Yes I'm losing my touch way too much
Baby, get me out of here
It should be clear, yes

I ain't going to keep it long, baby
But just long, long enough
I've got to pick up my passports
And I've got to get my stuff

'Cause I'm losing my touch
Just losing my touch, baby, baby, baby
I'm losing my touch way, way too much
Baby, get me out of here
Well it must be clear

Losing my touch
Yes I'm losing my touch
Yes I'm losing my touch way too much
Baby get me out of here

Ok now, having googled the lyrics I remember my one big complaint: it's the "way too much" line - it doesn't sound good or make much sense... you either got your touch or you don't so saying you're losing it way too much invokes the "little bit pregnant" clause. it makes the whole thing too hesitant. and it's just kind of a cheap rhyme.

I was about to say, "Losing My Edge" was the first thing I thought of when reading this thread title, so let us celebrate that concept. The Stones doing that would just make me so happy for the strangeness of the world.
