I was just humming "Thirty-Three" by le Smashpumps earlier today, so that. "World In My Eyes" by Depeche also works, and since Nabisco mentioned him earlier today, whatever did happen to Oran 'Juice' Jones, because "The Rain" rooled, mang.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 06:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah man, New Jack Swing in the hizzouse! Can I hear it for "Just Got Paid" by Johnny Kemp?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

What was the name of that Bone Thugz n Harmony song with the new member Powder Bone? Was it "Ghetto Cowboy?" I think it was.

I remember a band called Summercamp that had a minor alt-radio hit in the summer of 1997. I liked that song.

I was surprised people payed attention to Wax's 2 hits in 1995, "California" with Spike Jonze's endlessly brilliant man-on-fire video, and "Who is Next" from the Nike street tennis ad featuring Andre Agassi. Most successful group to ever come out of El Cajon, California.

Heard Tony Toni Tone's "If I Had No Loot" on some early 90's made for TV hip hop comp. Loved that one.

How about a moment of praise for "My Red Hot Car?" I'm still not sick of this song yet, not at all.

karl in california, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 06:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Girl-pop owns this thread!

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 06:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy shit I forgot the best girl-pop record ever made, Little Eva's "Just a Little Girl."

And The Ronette's "Do I Love You?" belongs here too.

Jody, why did you start this thread just when I was trying to go to bed?!

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Because I'm a merciless minx.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mountains" - Prince; it was a hit, but not so huge that everyone wasn't freaking out like I was that it got left off the Hits comps

"Bad Girl" - Madonna; not that big a hit, not nearly as big as "Causing a Commotion" for example, nevermind "Who's that Girl", nevermind "Dress You Up", nevermind "Vogue", so we're talking fifth-tier hit-status and it's relative failure was probably the point when the cw tagged Erotica a disappointment. I'll let JBR fill you in elsewhere on the desperation. The only great Madonna ballad that's not either a love song or a song about her parents?

"A Roller Skating Jam Called Saturdays" - De La Soul; their best single (well, tied with "Buddy"), but the sour "Ring Ring Hey Hey" had burnt away alot of the good will from 3 Feet High and De La Soul Is Dead was (shortterm at least) labeled a dud by the time this single came out.

"Digital Love" - Daft Punk; okay hardly forgotten and strictly a chartbased definition of unsuccessful but I heard "One More Time" like crazy everywhere and the only time I heard this and it wasn't coming from someone's cd player was when it was in the Gap ad. what. the. fuck.

"Anything But Down" - Sheryl Crow; I will be mocked mercilessly for this one, I can't think of a Lucinda Williams song I like more than this.

"Money Don't Matter 2Night" - Prince; it was hit at the time but I haven't heard this song on the radio in ten years.

"In God's Country" - U2; maybe the best song on The Joshua Tree, probably the best single, definitely the best single that doesn't start with the letter W, you'd think with all the U2 on AOR this would pop up occasionally but no. It's popping up in the credits is the best moment in Three Kings not specifically tied to an actor's performance or period-accurate references to Warren Moon. I'm not gonna list two U2 songs (on principle) but I will add that the part of "All I Want Is You" where Van Dyke Parks takes over is really, really nice.

"One Step Up" - Bruce Springsteen; I'm consistently amazed that every song on Tunnel of Love hasn't been remade by a country artist. This one begs for it.

"U Like Pina Coladas" - Da Real One; an anthem for our age.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Shanice - I LOCW YOUR SMILE

and that Martika song

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Betty Boo - "Hangover"

Richard Copping (avoid80), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-but noone's forgotten "Kids in America"!

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Again: Shanice - I Love Your Smile

the greatest forgotten song of the first half of the 90s, at least

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

the key reason for 'dress you up's not-massive stauts
is due mainly to it's video, which was in actual
fact, not a real viseo at all (in europe at least)
but a clippette from the first tour (1984) film.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, it was rubbish
that was my actual point.
it wasn't the song on the vid but
a crummy live sung version.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Diane King 'Shy Guy' (ludicrously catchy, what happened to this woman?)

A-Ha 'The Sun Always Shines On TV' ('Take On Me' gets all the attention but this did better in the UK)

Les Rythmes Digitales 'Sometimes'

Ini Kamoze 'Here Comes The Hotstepper' (not heard this for some time)

Skee-Lo 'Top Of The Stairs' (Better best forgotten perhaps)

Robyn S 'Luv 4 Luv' (too similar to the superior first single to really make a lasting impact, but airplay was plentiful at the time)

Babylon Zoo 'Animal Army' (worth hearing just so you could marvel at how much Jas Mann sounded like Ian Brown at times - not the chorus tho, bleurgh)

EMF 'I Believe' (why would you release a song called 'Unbelievable' then follow it up with an opposing statement'? it was shite anyway)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

janni (janni), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Second the hip-hip-hurray for "Mountains," esp. the incredible 12" version.

Also: the Flying Lizards' "Hands 2 Take" (yeah yeah "Money" whatever).

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

New Edition "Mr. Telephone Man", "Cool It Now"
Alphaville "Big In Japan"
Olivia Newton-John "Soul Kiss"
Stevie Nicks "Stand Back," "Talk To Me"
Queen "Body Language" (a stand-in for the grossly underrated Hot Space album)
Every single by Paul Revere & The Raiders except "Indian Reservation"
Urge Overkill's "The Break"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

"I Love Your Smile" is terrific. Pair it with Billy Lawrence's "Happiness".
