I voted for some other songs. I didn't take proper note.

No prob. I can't remember what I voted for, but 12 is too little, man.

I actually haven't heard anything since the Odes record. I have all the stuff up to then, but I just couldn't justify buying more of his albums. They're too samey and too frequent to properly keep up. Is there anything that I've REALLY missed out on?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. "I See A Darkness" is his best record since "Viva Last Blues" - I don't think there's a bad (or even mediocre) song on the record, they're all strong tunes and he tweaks his normal approach a little bit: there's an honest-to-God sea chanty, some beautifuly understated horns on one track, actual harmonizing, etc.

Yeah, I have Darkness, I think that was the last proper album I bought. I also have Lost Blues 2. I like the Viva Last Blues stuff best, where it sounds like he has a real band.

The new album ('Master and Everyone’) is a beast (I mean so good it's dangerous in a mythical way, like a dragon/Cyclops). It's his best since 'Days in the wake' of about 8 years ago. It lacks the grim mediaeval imagery of his previous works but is considerably more subtle and effeminate. If his previous two albums can be seen as having taken as themes, death ('I see a darkness') and sex ('Ease down the road') then 'Master and Everyone' can be seen as having taken love as its theme. I mean love in the sense that love can be lost, forgotten, remembered and lusted after just as 'death' can be understood in terms of life, god, fear and pleasure. It is his most simple and honest record to date; you sing along for pleasure rather than for longing, it is a friend rather than a counsellor. The cover is funny too, very hairy.

The Cover is exactly like a Civil War photo, right down the glassy look in WO's eyes.
