I remember everyone getting super pissed off at The Coup for their cover of PARTY MUSIC, but this little number by Busta Rhymes came out in 1998.....a bit creepy no?

Remember when Busta would say "there's only five years left", "then there's only three years left"

What was really creepily prescient was that one time in 1993 when Islamist terrorists tried to destroy the World Trade Center ...

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, blowing up skyscrapers is surely not that hard to think of, and when people thought of big obvious skyscrapers to blow up the WTC had to come up first, because it was, like, representative of all the things about skyscrapers that make people want to blow them up, plus there were two of them, which is visually better, plus they way high up in the visual composition of a recognizable skyline, plus they were modern-looking (blowing up a Louis Sullivan skyscraper or something just wouldn't have the same tone), plus their shape was iconic of modern skyscrapers and not, you know, intersting, which would ruin the genericness of the symbolic "blowing up a skyscraper" image ... All of which is to say that if you were going to put together a picture of skyscrapers exploding, they were going to have to look like the WTC for the whole thing not to look just sort of silly.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 February 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad use of word "interesting," because they actually were interesting-looking, just not shapewise: if it were some odd geometrically-complex modern skyscraper it just wouldn't have the right visual impact at all, not least because the person looking at the picture might think "hey, actually that building's all cool and artistic-looking, what are you doing with it?"

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 February 2003 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"I mean, blowing up skyscrapers is surely not that hard to think of,"

True, but I was just struck by the visual resmemblance to the actual event.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 February 2003 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the Jeru cover came after the 1993 bombing of the WTC, didn't it? And the destroyed statue of liberty on the back cover looks like it's out of Planet of the Apes!

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 7 February 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

This WTC cover is odd.

Wow. I don't know if it's prescient,.....but it's certainly strange.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 February 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't quite read the album title. Is it "Towering Foccacia"?

TMFTML (TMFTML), Friday, 7 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

LOL. Towering Toccata.
