so in a peroid of 4 hours last night i was trying to defend john cage to a rockist and britney spears to another rockist, i love them both deeply- and i was thinking, why do i feel a need to explain and defend my choices.

then i was thinking ilm is the only place i know about that loves mr cage and ms spears. so talk about this.

"... why do i feel a need to explain and defend my choices. "

as for "why", there's no way of telling. i'd rather say, "there's no need, really"

Britney has a nicer midriff.

Cage had better hair.

It would be pleasant if Britney could do a silent piece. Or allow David Tudor to overtake her songs with a truck engine.

so in a peroid of 4 hours last night i was trying to defend john cage to a rockist and britney spears to another rockist . . .

It's times like these that call for the ILMAlert™ bracelet!

It would be more interesting (to me, at least) to overhear you trying to defend Britney to Cage, or Cage to Britney.

You know, except for the Cage being dead part. You know what I mean.

I just found a recording at the library the other day of a John Cage piece written for turntables-playing-test-tone-records-at-different-speeds, making him the first DJ/turntablist way back in the 40s.

Also there's his album "Indeterminacy", where he talks while music is playing: Cage was an early rapper!

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 7 February 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

nickalicious was it "imaginary landscape no. 1"? i like that one. also, pierre's schaeffer and henry's "symphonie pour un homme seul" is the video game sound chip experience 30 years before the fact!

I think the phrase "four minutes and thirty three seconds" could be used with greatness in the chorus of a Britney song, come to think of it.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

And oh, the potential references.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 February 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like Britney better if only she knew sumpin about mushr00ms

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Saturday, 8 February 2003 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

John Cage was never part of a Fred Durst/Justin Timberlake love triangle though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 8 February 2003 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, you just haven't read the right slash.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 8 February 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

''Cage had better hair.''

A better voice and a lovelier smile but britney is the better dancer.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 8 February 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, but I've never seen footage of Cage dancing, or heard of him doing it -- not as part of Merce Cunningham's troupe or anything. So I dunno. I guess Britney wins that one by default.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 8 February 2003 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah I doubt cage danced as in performance mode but he did stuff for Cunningham (and since I've never watched much of that) its by default.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 8 February 2003 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, ok, also Britney has bigger tits.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 8 February 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

um, HELLO!!PLASTIC SURGERY!!! (heh)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 8 February 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

then i was thinking ilm is the only place i know about that loves mr cage and ms spears. so talk about this.

As regards this original question, and as a perpetual ILM lurker, I often feel as though ILM is the only place where my taste makes any sense. I work in a large chain rekkid store; one night I bought I bought "Les Inspirations Insolites d'Erik Satie", some Sibelius, and the Timberlake "Like I L0ve You" 12" and my co-workers - people who allegedly also Love Music - treated me as though I was insane. I didn't feel as though there was any need to "defend" my purchases, nor did I have the energy to do so; so I said something LAME like "one can't second-guess one's own tastes" and went home feeling m!ssundaztood but strangely self-righteous.

Another of my co-workers once referred to Shania Twain as "Shit-ia"!! HA HA HA!!! Oof.
