Yeah rap is just a fad fine, but rock is just an OLD fad.

(The irony is that there are plenty of perfectly good answers, like Creed or Staind but the people I'm baiting would never want to argue that anyway)

Who is ANY rocker/rock artist that was still relevant, in 1970? (Meltzer's ?)

answer=none

Of course that doesn't mean there aren't hundreds (too tedious to tick off) of enjoyable / fun records since then. But it's all corporatized. It means less than nothing in world historical terms. Formally, it's all incredibly staid. And the best stuff is of course worth living for.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:24 (twenty-three years ago)

rock n roll got bought out by rc cola sometime around 1961

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:26 (twenty-three years ago)

true dat.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Define "relevant." It's a term generally so vague as to be meaningless.

dub you hell (wl), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops. I guess we're just playing off every other thread. I still hate that word, though.

dub ewe 'ell (wl), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:31 (twenty-three years ago)

No, don't define relevant. please.

Let it just lie there, smouldering, festering...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:32 (twenty-three years ago)

It starts and ends with Ronnie James Dio.

Hayden (Hayden), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

it kind of does, when you consider his first record was in - what - 1958?

tom (other one), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

johnny & the hurricanes, the bobby fuller 4, ral donner

duane, Monday, 10 February 2003 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

why bother, considering that in the way the question is delineated, "relevancy"="mainstream popularity"? yawn.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 10 February 2003 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening to Bob Marley at the moment and it sounds like totally relevant rock music to me *ducks*

this thread is sub-harvellian at best

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 10 February 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how they do it, but god damn it, the Rolling Stones are still the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world.

Ignore my last post, I've just read the related threads and realized I'm making an ass of myself. As usual.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 February 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

What's relevant to 'the kids' isn't necessarily relevant to me, so big deal! Jay-Z and/or 50 Cent couldn't possibly be less relevant to my life (despite ruling the charts) whereas I still find --- WAIT FOR IT -- Killing Joke relevant (especially given their penchant for doomsday soothsaying). At the end of the day, though, who cares what's relevant? If you like it -- you like it. End of story.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 February 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The great thing about all this is not relevent for some people still means having the act shoved in their face, while I don't know anything about the Cletus Indie Twang Momentous Quartet or whatever the fuck all the lunatics listen to.

The greatest rock band going right now is Tegan and Sara.

AaronHz, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

There is no such thing as relevant in music.

However, recent rockers are more timeless than most, because they don't follow trends.

My Chemical Romance is actually pretty good. So are HIM. And The Killers. God that sounds like trolling but I swear, can't stop listening to any of them and I'm, like, a huge hipster and shit. Worship Stephin Merritt, wear black rimmed glasses, all of that.

BTW "Spaceman" by The Killers, "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" by MCR and "Vampire Heart" by HIM would be my three favorites. "Spaceman" and "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" have AWESOME videos.
