Gino Vanelli "Fly into This Night" vs Shellac "New Number Order"

Songs where they speed up and slow down the tape, in Shellac's they do it to change the tempo and in Vanelli's they do it to modulate (he manages to hit all the notes tho), they keep the rhythm pretty steady for the most parts (best when it wobbles tho)

(of course, if you have a really shitty turntable then everything sounds like this already)

(re tape manipulation, that 'electronic squeegee' sound on the Brazen Hussies CD is actually a guitar. That's right, I've come up with a completely unprecedented guitar sound, they said it couldn't be done!)

three weeks pass...
Weston claims there's no tape manipulation on New Number Order. He says you can tell because there's no tonal change when the tempo slows and speeds up.

I'll have to listen to it again, but if that's true, I'm impressed!

Gino Vanelli is actually kind of cool. I love the fact that a paisan didn't feel compelled AT ALL to change his name to achieve stardom. He's got to get some props.

Plus "Stop" is a pretty great song.

Have you heard the prog concept album he did in the 70s? I was listening to the Carleton radio station one night. The DJ was doing an all-prog show and was really hard up for Cancon. He played the entire album. It was something about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It sounds exactly like you'd expect a Gino Vanelli prog album to sound.

"New Number Order" sucks, as does everything on 1000 Hurts after "Prayer to God". Trigger Happy did more fun tempo changes.

'1000 Hurts sucks'?

Well - "Hey man, I wanna have a fight with you! And from the way you're acting, it appears you want one too!"

Re Vanelli prog album - was it 'Pauper in Paradise' or 'Gist of the Gemini'? I've got all the 70s things and those are the 'concept' ones

Going by the AMG reviews, I'm guessing Gemini since I don't recall an orchestral accompaniment. You're a Gino Vanelli completist, dave?

Unfortunately I don't have anything past 'B2B'. I did however buy Michael Morales' amazing 1989 single "Who Do You Give Your Love To" as it's the most blatant Gino photocopy in existence!

Are you visiting Toronto any time soon?
