Quick find some reason to like one of the two frat boy staples from the Great White North.

DMB is American, and they get my vote. The Hip aren't even good at being boring.

I'd have to take The Hip, they did somehow pull Day For Night from there asses. Take anyone one or two Hip singles on their own there great. But its the same as the last few singles.

Hip wins, for at least having interesting lyrics and some good barband riffs. But Downie's got another solo project coming out and that's REAL lame.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Day For Night is great, simmering and barely penetrable. I also like Trouble at the Hiphouse for a number of tracks (I don't care what anyone says, "Ahead by a Century" is great, and I still love pretending that that other track on the album is called "700 Ft. Chicken").

My apologies, DMB are American, I always get them mixed up with Mathew Sweet Band.
Either way

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you want to say Matthew Good Band??? Though I think the band part is gone now. Pity, it was the best part.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes yes, my apologies to Mathew Sweet.

Sweet, good, Dave, too many freaking Mathews for my liking.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

But Downie's got another solo project coming out and that's REAL lame.

His first solo album actually had some worthwhile bits, though. It sounded off-the-cuff and, well... inspired! (As opposed to the last string of TTH duds.)

gazuga (gazuga), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Downie just seems so full of himself, so convinced that he's a rock & roll Al Purdy. He's like the Jim Derogatis of CanRock.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

uuuhhh.... yeah dmb is better

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Tragically Hip are a much better band. However, their last two albums are crap/boring and their first three are hugely overrated. Day for Night is classic and Fully Completely is pretty good. The Hip do have great lyrics and can have a pretty good snarl at times-much more than one can say for lite-jazz DMB.

I thought Gord Downie's solo album was miles better than anything the Hip have put out in years.

Tragically Hip sure has an immeasurably better *name* (if little else)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll go down as the only Hip fan here, though I agree their early albums are far overrated. Since the early-mid 90's, though, they've hit stride with, I feel, four straight albums(Henhouse to Violet Light) with good songs, dynamics, and plenty of character. The frat-boy thing is unfortunate, and not something they cultivate.

Lyrically, Downie hits on some wildly impressive imagery, especially on Music @ Work. He's got a fair grounding in poetry too; there's definite form and poise to most of his stuff.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 13 February 2003 07:23 (twenty-three years ago)

impressive imagery = balloning coke habit

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 13 February 2003 07:59 (twenty-three years ago)

?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 13 February 2003 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Both bands suck...end of story.
