Thread prompted by listening to OK Computer and realizing that Phil Selway does NOT get the props he deserves. He's a very powerful drummer with some tasty beats...in my opinion the "unsung hero" of Radiohead, by making their pretty, airy, arty music actually RAWK.

Who else?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Need I say their names yet again?

LAIKA.

and MOONSHAKE.

dammit.

janni (janni), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Mariah Carey, really? really. No way!
But of course, mon ami.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second LAIKA.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I really, really dug Brainiac during their brief career, particularly the band's last album on Grass and its first for Touch and Go. And the band's music kind of anticipated the renewed interest in "post-punk."
The only time I see the band mentioned is during reviews of Enon.
They deserve more props.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird, Nickalicious, I just had that same conversation with my drummer last Friday!

kate, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

David Byrne, guitarist

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil Selway is an excellent drummer. I agree completely.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed on Brainiac. although i almost always typo them as "Braniac." which would indicate something else entirely from what their music actually inspires in me.

Phil Selway is also good.

but NO ONE can beat the sheer soulfulness of Jonny Greenwood's xylophoning!

janni (janni), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The Replacements. Not enough Replacements threads. More scruffy midwestern US rock needs to be mentioned. And praised. Johnny Cougar, perhaps. Blood on the scarecrow! Screw Ryan Adams, unless he's gonna make Stranger's Almanac II.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Carter Beauford is the best commercialized drummer out there, Dave Matthews is genious in his ability to conjure unconventional rythms on guitar while singing legato over them, there's really nothing like it. Leroi, boyd, and Stefan are all incredible musicians that are perfect in creating an awesome eclectic sound with Dave and Carter. "
From another thread.

You really don't remember the eighties, do you?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you, sue. I'd have to agree with you there.
I'd also have to say that PHISH and BEla Fleck and the Flecktones will never get the props they deserve.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

R.O.C.K. In the U.S.A, Jody. Blood on the Scarecrow.

Sandy Bull for being the guy whose instrumental records were in every serious young musician's collection in the '60s for them to draw inspiration from. The whole idea of blending "international" music with the available tones of Western instruments and the whole idea of an extended fuzzy electric guitar improvisation on a r&b tune. Not only that he was first out of the gate, he ran with class and grace. He set the attitude and pace as early as 1961, and others learned and realized their own possibilities.

bflaska, Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Fourth for Laika which is probably beginning to undermine the underated value.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Seconded for Mo-Ho-Bish-O-Pi. Best one album band ever (ignoring the album what they did that didn't get released).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Tuxedomoon
God is my co-pilot
White Noise
One-man band attempts in a non-electronica stylee (mccartney's solo lps, rundgren something/anything + true star, prince dirty mind, stevie wonder music of my mind)
depending who you talk to, Sly and the Family Stone (relegated to the back of the bus as two-hit wonder populist footnote by anyone satiated by "oldies" radio, ignored by rock audiences largely in favor of hendrix, worshipped by the diehard funk massif, who let's be honest comprise like 1.2% of the globe, if that)

but the last laika record was horrible. margaret trying to sing for real, yikes. moonshake 'eva luna' may be the greatest thing ever though.

julian swales made more beautiful noise than anyone else ever.

le mans, moose, kaye woodward.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Jon Langford. I agree with Christgau that he's the artist of year for 2002.
But there doesn't seem to be many Mekons fans on this board.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Barney Summner as a guitarist

The Homosexuals and their various sundry spin-offs, detours and collisions.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Japan should get more credit for being the all-important missing link between Roxy Music and Duran Duran/80s new romantic.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I repeat, Topper Headon as drummer.

Is PinkFloyd a dirty word?

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Thursday, 13 February 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, it's two words, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 February 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Thomas, is puerto muerto yet another Langford project? Or is that Sally Timms?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 13 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

well really, at least 3 projects Margie Fiedler's been involved in have been mentioned here so far. so can we just say "Margie Fiedler" and be done with it? ;)

re: Barney Sumner: no, he isn't given enough credit as a guitarist. nor is he given enough credit as a melodica player. or a cowbell player, for that matter. or an EMU-dropper!

janni (janni), Thursday, 13 February 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Most people tend to overlook Moby's earlier works, which include some of the best rave songs ever (tho I've mentioned this many times before)

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

and as Curtis brought up elsewhere...Wesley Willis. :)

janni (janni), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Japan, most definitely!!

Adam A. (Keiko), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah keith, le mans and moose. with le mans you can put La Buena Vida. SImply beautiful stuff.

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 13 February 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

And:

Hurrah!
The House Of Love
The Pooh Sticks
etc.

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 13 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Never really got the Pooh Sticks.

The House of Love is a fine choice, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

ah but the pooh sticks were brilliant. Plus they never actually existed.

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 13 February 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

If only.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Thomas, is puerto muerto yet another Langford project? Or is that Sally Timms?
-- Jazzbo, February 13th, 2003 9:48 AM.

its langford...but special guest spot would be more apt.

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Thursday, 13 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

well, IM the Pooh Sticks are classic in terms of concept and execution

g (graysonlane), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Who doesn't get the props they deserve? I'll tell ya who: The Monkees. Yes they were a manufactured band, but they were, without a doubt, THE GREATEST MANUFACTURED BAND OF ALL-TIME. Singy songy boyband melodies, boyband choruses, but also the one thing that NO other boyband has, and that's GUITARS! Guitars baby! And who talks about 'em now? NOBODY! I'm listening to their greatest hits album right now and I absolutely love every single one of these songs. I'm sure everyone's heard "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer" and "Hey Hey We're the Monkees" to death, but good Lordy do they have so many other awesome songs. "Porpoise Song" is a Godlike organ-and-drums soul number, "Auntie's Municipal Court" is perfect pop heaven, and "Sunny Girlfriend" is a Nesmith country classic.

Their TV show sucked though.

Evan (Evan), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

They're not heroes but Third Eye Blind are better than they get credit for.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 14 February 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Scorpions also don't get enough credit.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 14 February 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The Montgolfier Brothers don't get any credit. There was not one person voting for them in the Pazz&Jop. That's probably why I like them so much. My love of their music has to compensate for the general indifference. I like that idea.
