Maxinquaye, is probably my favorite album of all time, but since To Bring you My Love,. is probably my second favorite album of all time (as I've lost my copy of Rid of Me), even though I was too clueless to fully experience it, 1995 "was" the best year ever for me, musically.

Little plug here for Whale's We Care as the best and most fucked-up album from that year. "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe," and that song at the end where she's dying in a car crash for eight minutes, and that other song where she kind of says that she wants to fist Sarah Cracknell? Lovely stuff.

1995 was a big year for me. I quit my job and emigrated. Playing 'Ponderosa' instantly transports me back to world I left behind like no other :- drab, concrete, poverty stricken council estates in north Glasgow full of 'weeping winos'.

I almost, kind-of, in-a-way agree with you. I think Maxinquaye is a great album, and the better of the two. But I also think Pre-Millenium Tension is crazy good, and not to be ignored. It's definitley definitely undervalued.

But for me, Maxinquaye is in a tie with Different Class. If you think about it, the two albums cover similar thematic ground. Both are about class and poverty, while simultaneously and amazingly also being about sex.

At the time my joint album of the year was "Only heaven" by Young Gods and "Further" by Flying Saucer Attack. With retrospect I'd probably place "Grand Prix" (which I didn't hear at the time) and "Heartworm" up there too, FSA hasn't worn too well but "Only heaven" got a recent spin and sounded as good and forward looking now as then.

Dammit I'm really embarrassed. How o how could I have forgotten you, Clouds Taste Metallic? Not only the Lips' best record, but the finest intertwinement of Big Fat Metal Guitar Hooks with 90s Indie Pop Sentiments to ever hijack my Discman. I've even included you on lists of my fave records ever, and yet when the chips were down I mentioned Whale (gre!t) and Boo Radleys (!lso gre!t) over thee, little orange and green CD. Some day, perhaps, you'll forgive me.
