and i see now that i forgot to Answer This First yesterday when i started....

hello, my name is john w. fail, the w really is william or will so i am frequently known as John Will Fail. i live in pittsburgh, pa, where i maintain a small stumbling record label called cenotaph (which you may know for releases by arco flute foundation, need new body, microwaves, and earth trumpet). i love music and i'm hoping this will a high quality board so i can learn and share knowledge about music.

Greetings, welcome to us. :-) I'd say we're high quality, but the good and bad come together easily, and I'm hardly innocent of that. ;-) Visit I Love Everything too if you'd like! Do y'all have a website?

Ned, you don't recognize your own Fakejazz brother? FOR SHAME!

I believe Nedward & like-minded drone junkies will appreciate the Arco Flute Foundation, and I'm equally confident zee post-punk contingent will fall madly in love w/ the Microwaves. And JWF has MP3 love for you curious folk, so give him a fair shake, mmmkay?

(John, I'm still waiting for my first PR check, so when you get a chance, make w/ the dough.)

dave - the check will go out when profits are finally made (ie:never).

Hello. Since I didn't Answer This First either, I'll just add on here. I'm another John. I live in DC but grew up in Pittsburgh (though I've not met John Will Fail).

I first heard Fela thanks to a piece that Michaelangelo Matos wrote in Perfect Sound Forever several years ago. That was pretty cool; I'm hoping for more such revelations here. Have a good weekend.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 7 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

how old are you?

pittsburgh is a great, great place. were you at all involved with the music scene here?

john fail (cenotaph), Friday, 7 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm 31, and I haven't lived in Pittsburgh since I left for college 14 (gulp) years ago. So, no. I still like my Karl Hendricks records, though...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

welcome johns. (to john the first) earth trumpet rulz.

anyone ever notice that the bassline/drum pattern in "what you gonna do?" by missy elliott is from fela kuti's "colonial mentality?"

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

whoa, you've actually heard earth trumpet?!!

karl hendricks still works at paul's cd's (which may have been called jim's records when you were last here). he's still putting out records too!

john fail (cenotaph), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I trekked to Bloomfield to Jim's a couple times when I was home from college. My musical horizons were rather narrower when I lived there, though--Pittsburgh radio was none too adventuresome when I was a kid and I couldn't get WRCT where I lived. (Actually, down at that end of the dial I kept picking up WJAS-TV in Johnstown!)

I'm glad to hear the Karl Hendricks is still making music (I think I heard he was in the English grad school at Pitt?)--though perhaps it would be best for him if it's less depressing than before... Cheers!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 7 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

yep, i actually had a class with Karl (the Modernist Tradition, great class). it was fun.

john fail (cenotaph), Friday, 7 March 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I lived in Pittsburgh for my first 18 years but sadly did not know anything about the local music scene there. I listened to the X. It was bad.

Greetings, I think both of you will enjoy this place.

whoa, you've actually heard earth trumpet?!!

yeah, bought a copy in the height of my volcano the bear mania...think we also have one at my radio station (WPRB). prog blender fuckery bliss.

Hi!

John W. Fail is a dude. Makes nice music and is funny as hell... it was bizarre to see this feature on him in Dusted: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/features/585

Check out his Double Fade podcast - late night ramblings about the underground/shopping/cooking with Birds of Delay's Steve Warwick: http://www.icewhistle.com/

... and if he's still lurking, hello for four years ago.
