My candidate:
"Meet Me by the Water" -- Saturday Sounds Good to Me

Detroit's own Belle & Sebastian. Maybe a little too much, really. But what a song.

Meet me by the water, underneath the big beehive
Bring your record player and your Raincoats 45s

And the first verse is so perfect that they let a saxophone play the second verse, and then it all falls apart into some goofy Motown dub in the third verse until there's just a guitar left trying to hold everything together. Hopeless and romantic, yes indeed.

I walked around today watching the snow melt and listened to this 8 times in a row.

Saturday Looks Good to Me, that should say. Looks good, sounds good, feels good, is good. (sorry...)

"The Man That I Am With My Man" by The Hidden Cameras. Off the new album, which is out in early April, but I went out of my way to get a press copy. Just in case the world comes to an end on March 17th. According to every single newspaper.

The new Saturday Looks Good to Me album on Polyvinyl Records, All Your Summer Songs, will include that track, but it sounds like a remix or alternate version. A different version is on the fabulous Gold Kiss Gala: I'll Wed You compilation on Dark Beloved Cloud, which you can get by sending a wedding card to (ilx regular) Douglas. He comments on the track: Saturday Looks Good to Me is Jodi Buonanno of the Secret Stars and Fred Thomas of Flashpapr. "Meet Me by the Water" was based on Jodi's image of the two of us standing together at Tonic in New York City.

They are severely channeling the Supremes on that track, and the reverb and snare drum sounds are just perfect - I can't get enough of it. The band is currently on tour...wish I could see 'em.

Jesse - just got around to downloading this track this afternoon and I must THANK YOU - what a GREAT song. Kinda like His Name is Alive meets Aislers Set for the first two minutes, then that INSANE dub thing at the end - floored! Melody is kinda familiar, in a good way.

I've always liked Flashpapr (hung out with them once - we have friends in common - good people) and was neither here nor there on the secret stars. I'll definitely pick up this record though - how are the other songs?

and is Flashpapr broken up?

This song is SO good!!

tho it's supposed to be more 'autumnal' than spring-y... well, it comes from the album Out Of Season anyway, and is a most delicate and delicious song all the same-- "Romance" by Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man

Owen - "Poor Souls", brilliant. "I swear to god I'll die if I go home alone tonight..." "You in love with the Cocteau Twins....bored with your boyfriend, I want to be with you tonight...with our legs crossed...our tongues tied."
