Did anyone watch the Beck concert on MuchMusic last night?

I never really cared for him before but it was mostly great.

I think seeing him live earlier last year with the Flaming Lips is the only context I was able to appreciate most of Sea Change's material. Otherwise, it's still a three, maybe four-song album to me.

Did he bust out some of his weird stage banter like he did in Ann Arbor last year, going on a hilarious ramble about 1992 and Tom Petty's "Free Fallin"? Did he at least pull out his toy beatbox guitar?

I listened to a bit of Sea Change once and thought it was crap. But I liked him doing "Lost Cause" on (Letterman?).

Maybe it's the production that's the problem?

beck is kinda difficult to appreciate unless he is in front of you with a guitar. he is honestly good. can someone tape this concert for me? i dont get mm.

I used to worship this man, but the new stuff is just kind of there. Granted, some of the songs are pretty good - like "Lost Cause", the obvious single, which I still haven't tired of. But the enthusiasm feels gone now. I mean, on some of the songs on the new album, you can almost literally hear his bones creaking.

The old stuff would just flow with effortless energy; I have a tape of some mp3s someone gave me of a show he did on KAOS radio in I think 93 or 94 and it's really good stuff. He does a song about Johnny Depp and tells this funny story about how someone in another band "wanted to kick my..ah...he wanted to kick my sass" and then proceeds to sing a song he wrote about the situation from his enemy's point of view called "Beck Will Die". There's also a live version of the Sea Change songs that is much better than the album cut.

That reminds me. One of my friends said they saw him right after "Loser" came out and the stage was just covered in beer cans. What Beck did was walk onstage, sit on the stool, play through "Loser" 3 and a half times through, then fall off the stool and crawl off stage through the cans. Must have been pretty funny to see live.

Most of the stuff was more funk-ish-oriented, IIRC.
