What band/artist have you read about the most and yet never heard

Momus bringing up Primal Scream made me think about how I have probably only heard two of their songs in my life. That famous one that they used to show on MTV along with Loop and Soup Dragon videos with the biker movie dialogue that Mudhoney used(and I think Mudhoney used it better and I like that song better too)and one more from the album after that that sounded like the Black Crowes or something(I can't really remember)that they tried to play on U.S. radio but no one wanted to hear it.Anyway,I've heard them. But then I thought about how I have read a zillion reviews and articles in brit mags about the Manic Street Preachers and I even read the 100 page article in Mojo INCLUDING the run down of every single and b-side they ever put out.But I ain't never heard 'em.Not even once.(unless by accident and I didn't know what I was hearing-but I don't think so)
Anybody else well-versed in the careers of a band/artist that have never graced their ears?
(ILM counts kinda cuz people go on and on about so much stuff that you might not have heard-But their are certain acts that get written about forever, you know.By the way, would I like the Divine Comedy? Hah Hah! there's another one. Come to think of it,would I like Momus? The Philadelphia Weekly this week gave what I think is a positive review of his new one after they stopped calling him a pervert.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 8 March 2003 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

jimi hendrix, sun ra, the incredible string band, killing joke.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yes killing joke...it was an education through being shouted at

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I still have yet to hear anything by MC5 other than "Kick Out The Jams.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

that makes me think of "IT'S EDUCATIONAL!!" in 'u-mass'.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

wait, i just thought of something, does hearing the theme song to short lived television spinoff "that 80s show" count?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to hear from someone who has actually read a BOOK about someone that they have never heard.I would have to give them a prize or something.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

well, i just read train and the only music i've heard from it is sly stone and elvis singing stuff like "do the clam". where's my no prize?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

that should be mystery train of course

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

MC5! I totally forgot I've only heard a little bit of "Kick Out The Jams" in I Shot Andy Warhol and nothing else.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I ain't heard anything by the MC5. Or much by the Smiths.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I guarantee if I pick up a copy of Jockey Slut I haven't heard a thing in it. I looooove reading about dance music that I will never hear. I read the Big Takeover too whenever it comes out and likewise, except for Jack Rabid's frothing at the mouth interviews with moldy punkers I haven't heard any of what he's talking about.Leatherface?Down By Law? Idlewild? Gene? What do Ocean Colour Scene sound like? Are they dreamy? And yet,I read it cover to cover. I don't know when I think I'll get to it all.I have heard Coco and the Bean though. I want a prize for that.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only heard Know Your Enemy and Regeneration from MCP and Divine Comedy respectively, which I'm guessing isn't the best introduction (though "Perfect Lovesong" by DC was okeydoke).

Other bands I've never heard (with help from Allmusic's genre pages & Pazz'n'Jop polls): Adverts, Marc Almond, Au Pairs, Auteurs, Badfinger, Beatnuts, Jeff Beck, Black Oak Arkansas, Blue Cheer, Boo Radleys, Solomon Burke, Cabaret Voltaire, Cannibal Ox, Manu Chao, Alex Chilton (solo, I've got Big Star), Coup, Rodney Crowell, Deep Purple (except one song on VH1 Classic I turn off after fifteen seconds - the video involves them recording in a castle), Fats Domino, Dwarves, Alejandro Escavedo, Funkadelic (but I've heard Parliament!), Hooodoo Gurus, Fela Kuti, Shelby Lynne, Magazine, Orchestra Baobab, Sam Phillips, Pretty Things, Raspberries, Sham 69, Shellac, Shoes, Slowdive, Soundtrack Of Our Lives, Spinanes, Swervedriver, Split Enz, Spoonie Gee, Stetsasonic, Al Stewart, Sweet, The The, 20/20, Gillian Welch, and Link Wray.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't "moving on up" the song you might be thinking of? it's the only primal scream song i've ever heard, too. half japanese do an AMAZING cover of it.
i guess you have to be a limey to understand primal scream.

john fail (cenotaph), Saturday, 8 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only heard one Spacemen 3 song ("Take Me To The Other Side"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 8 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril Levigne.
Norah Jones.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 8 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The Residents.

Scott Warner (thream), Saturday, 8 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Momus. Mountain Goats.

Yeah, yeah, i should know better, but they're the ones who come to mind.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 8 March 2003 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch, you've never heard "All Along the Watchtower" or "Purple Haze" or "Foxey Lady" or "Hey Joe"? Do they have classic rock radio where you live? Or do you just mean you haven't heard that much compared to the amount you've read?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 8 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the sex pistols

matthew james (matthew james), Saturday, 8 March 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

hstencil, Saturday, 8 March 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm fascinated by merzbow but haven't heard any, mainly because i'm aware his output is so huge i'll probably end up buying something shit

schnell schnell, Saturday, 8 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The only Merzbow thing I have is the record on Warp he did with Russell Haswell, which is pretty good.

hstencil, Saturday, 8 March 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard the Beatles before. What do those guys sound like? Aren't they suppose to be from Europe or something?

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Sunday, 9 March 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

K records stuff
Nation of Ulysses
Blue

mei (mei), Sunday, 9 March 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

William -- The Beatles are from Hamburg and are a fine skiffle band, but certainly not worth all the palaver required to track them down.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 9 March 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

sundar - i know i've heard a lousy student band covering "all along the watchtower", but i'm not sure i've heard the hendrix original. maybe i'll download "purple haze" and see if i recognize any of it. i was gonna borrow "electric ladyland" from a friend, but i felt i should finally return his "giant steps" before doing so. and no, i don't think we really have a dedicated classic rock station here, tho i'm sure if i listened long enough i'd hear hendrix on the radio eventually. outside of "satisfaction" and "you can't always get what you want"(cos it was in that microsoft ad), i don't even know if i've heard the rolling stones.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 9 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

That's so cool!

("AATW" is originally by Dylan actually.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 9 March 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I think maybe that was the 'lousy student band' version.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 9 March 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm, i couldn't remember if 'watchtower' was a celebrated dylan cover of the hendrix song or vice versa. dylan i know better, i've got 'blonde on blonde' and 'bringing it all back home'. actually, come to think of it, i'm not sure i've ever heard dylan on the radio either.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 9 March 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you heard Led Zeppelin?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

just "stairway to heaven", far as i consciously know. maybe not even the original either! i've probably heard it on vh1 or something tho.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

also heard nothing from: Yes

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ha why "cool", btw? cos i'm in some weird bizarro world where classic rock is escapable?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch, I think you should download "Starship Trooper"
immediately, that song encapsulates everything great about
Yes, though they've released more than their share of
unlistenable trash.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 9 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I really wanted to listen to Can, Neu!, Kraftwerk or Faust, all the kraut greats... but I really don't know where to start!

This week, it's Interpol.

kate, Monday, 10 March 2003 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

This probably sacreligious (sp?) to you ILMers, but I havn't heard ANY Fall, and the only Cure song I know is Lovecats.

Oh, I also have heard NOTHING by My Bloody Valentine, and I've yet to come across anything by the New York Dolls or MC5's. In fact, the only MC5's song I know is Kick Out The Jams, and I only know that from a very dodgy Jeff Buckley bootleg from a big European festival somewhere.

I also know NO Bobby Darin, NO Echo and the Bunnymen, NO Pearl Jam and NO ELP or Yes.

I could tell you a few interesting facts about these people - Pearl Jam I could give a career synopsis, but havn't heard a note of their stuff.

Hmm . . . it says something about something that we can all speak about a band or artist, yet have heard NOTHING or their music - someone say something deep about society and the cult of celebrity please!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 10 March 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

duane, Monday, 10 March 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 10 March 2003 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The Stax Story is a 4CD box set of all the essential Stax material, its a beautiful cornucopia of soul, from classic singles to cricket themes to lost greats and live versions of old faves. I highly recommend it, Julio.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 March 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)
