favorite SONGS

really narrowing it down, now, but I think it may be easier to pick favorite songs than albums. For instance, "Sweet Pea" is one of my favorite songs ever but fuck if I own any Tommy Roe albums. You know?

To start, I waste time collecting as many mp3s of versions of these songs as I can:

Gloomy Sunday (at least 20 versions exist - rickie nelson's is the best by FAR)

I'm Into Something Good (at least 35 versions)

Blues Run The Game (not enough versions but at least 10)

I usually don't get hung up on certain songs, so it's significant when I do. I remember filling a 90 minute tape with "I'm Only Sleeping" on repeat when I was just a lad. but I think the common link here, for me, is simplicity. I love "Sugar Shack" too, and "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue", though my favorite version of that is from a player piano roll

This will be useful for download recommendations as well, ideally.

I've got an original 7" of "Sweet Pea"! I used to listen to it when I was little and laugh my head off.

I can't really explain it - that songs just gets me.

Heard Suggs' (from Madness) version of it?

My faves:
"(I'm) Stranded" by the Saints, "Eighties" by Killing Joke (yes, still!), "She Sells Sanctuary" by the Cult, "Hybrid Moments" by the Misfits.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 9 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

alex - never heard that!! will download...

re: hybrid moments - that should be on my list, too. When I was younger i was in a misfits cover band called Psycho 78 that played for three consecutive Halloweens, and never have I enjoyed playing music more (to this day) than playing that song to a crowd who were grabbing the mic and screaming along. I had a devillock and everything. Bliss.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 9 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like "Born Under Punches"!!

Right now I'm amazed by the Bouncing Souls' theme song for the TV show "American High." It's no more than 30 seconds long - one verse and a chorus - and it's an incredible acievement in the "good-timey pop-punk" field. I don't know anything about the Bouncing Souls, but I feel like most bands go their whole lives without writing something that good.

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Monday, 10 March 2003 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" (version sung by Odetta, arr. by Luis E. Bacalov)

"Tema Popolaresco" (sung by Gianna Spagnulo)
"Belle senz'anima" (Riccardo Cocciante)
"Don't Walk Away From Love" (Simon Bonney)

Hmmm. You don't, by chance, appear to be Italian, do you? :-)
