and vise versa, if you like. Who does both well? Please leave out novelty one-offs by Travolta, Shelly Fabreres, Traci Ullman, etc

Search Dwight Yoakam, Vic Chesnutt, Vincent Gallo, Tom Waits, Will Oldham, Bjork.

Destroy Richard Hell, Bacon Brothers, Jeff Bridges, Billy Bob.

and has anyone heard Jack Palance's albums? One went for $15 on ebay recently...

it's much easier to find legit actors/-reses who used to be musicians than vice versa. as a matter of fact i can't think of a single one. spike from buffy the vampire slayer (james masters) is a pretty rockin band....but thats really it.

although....jim neighbors was pretty sucsessful at both. does anyone know if he started out music or acting? they used to be so inseprable.

and in recent news....i really don't think DMX is going to last long in the movie biz. there are only so many scenes he can act super angry in.....huhhhhh...argghhh!

bryan kennedy (bryan kennedy), Monday, 10 March 2003 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw jason schwartzman's band last summer in austin.....pbtt!! he tried to cut in front of us in line at another show and got shut down, though.

I have an album called "Odes" by Irene Papas which is lovely. Vangelis is responsible for the arrangements. I also have recordings of songs sung by Gerard Depardieu, Pia Zadora, and Harry Dean Stanton (that come to mind right now - I'm sure I have many more songs sung by actors, also).

tom (different one), Monday, 10 March 2003 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh - I can't forget Sophia Loren!

tom (other one), Monday, 10 March 2003 06:46 (twenty-three years ago)

As for those I'd mentioned, I don't remember Pia Zadora's acting at all (I haven't seen her in anything since I was a kid) but she can certainly sing well. Gerard Depardieu does well for the song, which was written for him, but I don't think he considers himself a singer. I don't watch for him, but I also won't venture that he's not a good actor. Harry Dean Stanton may not care whether he's a singer (I don't know), but I'll vote for him as both singer and actor. Irene Papas and Sophia Loren I think highly of for both their singing and acting, as I'm sure lots of other people do also.

tom (other one), Monday, 10 March 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently Carla Bruni is pretty... good.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 10 March 2003 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

William Shatner's album is great though I don't think I'd say he was a great singer.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 10 March 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Is everyone forgetting the genius of Vincent Gallo? Robert Mitchum?

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Destroy Richard Hell

Say the fuck what?

Since when has Richard Hell really been considered an "actor" outside of playing Meeker the corpse in "Desperately Seeking Susan" and a tiny starring role in the largely unseen "Smithereens"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Wouldn't most of these be considered musicians who act?
IE, Vic Chesnutt. Has he done anything other than his 5-minute long role in Sling Blade? He was great and odd though, and gets slammed into a door despite being in a wheelchair in real life, which was weird to me. I guess he does his own stunts.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The recordings are pretty uninspiring but I have to say that the Bacon Brothers and Thirty Odd Foot Of Grunts are damn fun in concert.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Richard Hell was AWFUL in Smithereens. Most people I know have seen it.

And I mentioned Vincent Gallo in the opening post.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure he was awful --- BECAUSE HE'S NOT AN ACTOR, THAT'S MY POINT!

I'm afraid this might just be inviting jokes, but isn't Woody Allen supposed to be pretty solid at his (niche) musical thing.

Dudley Moore for sure.

Anthony Perkin's head looks so photoshopped on that cover!

I think that up to like the 1950's Talent was generally expected to be able to act, sing and often dance as well so there was much more crossover.
