S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I have not heard a single one of these tracks so it's probably very good.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

is that the stark reality cherrystones? i heard 3 of their tracks on a tape. one was great. one was average. one was poor. so i'm undecided (if it is same band, this is a while back, like 98 or something)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that track is a DJ. Not a band. What is the information of the Cherrystones that you know?

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, could be same one then. i cant remember, i think the track was called "looking back, thinking forward" but i cant remember if that was the good track or the bad track. i think the label was 'stark reality', it kind of sounded a bit like Pnu Riff (but less 'spaceylectronics' and more jazzbreaks or something). pnu riffs records varied wildly in quality so i'm not sure...

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The Cherrystones, like you've mentioned above, that I know, does vary pretty wildly in quality. Edan, however rocks the house! : - D Especially the 'Love' sample on Emcees Smoke Crack.

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

here's the Stark Reality webpage:
http://jazzmanrecords.co.uk/starkreality7.asp
the Cherrystones one is at the bottom

michael (michael), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, thats not it. mine is something else. perhaps i got mixed up with something else (i havent actually heard the record in like 4 years)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! Thanks for the link. Looks like I will be doing some credit purchasing soon!

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Tom, never heard a single track, must be mindblowing.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Monday, 10 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

He asked me to put together a mix cdr to catch him up on things. That's why it's like that. Though everybody must have heard the Francoise Hardy track!

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh actually I think I have heard that yeah. It is very good if it's the one I'm thinking of.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 March 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Though I did cheat as the Mum and Dad track is a demo that nobody has heard! ; - )

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

eh, how bad would it be to say no I haven't ?

kevin brady (groeuvre), Monday, 10 March 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

O.k, everybody has got to have heard that theme from Rosemary's Baby!

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

But thats why I ILM, maybe I'll find something I really like !

kevin brady (groeuvre), Monday, 10 March 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigh! Sorry my friend but that is why I do not discuss music with my friends. I just get looks of: Huh? What? Why? Never heard of it.

: - D

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

dont get me wrong, S, I was only emboldened to write as Tom said what i thought when i saw the list..I dont think i'm very representative of the depth of musical knowledge to be found here, don't despair !

kevin brady (groeuvre), Monday, 10 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh O.k.! I am listening to it right now and it rocks and has a good flow. Am on the Goblin track and whenever I dj'ed at friend's weddings, this, I can tell you is a sneaky little dance track. Which is humourous considering it's spot in Dario Argento's movie, 'Profoundo Russo'.

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't recognize a single song title therein, so....y'know, sounds promising.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! Thanks for the link. Looks like I will be doing some credit purchasing soon!

i haven't been particularly impressed with most of the stuff on Stark Reality (notable exception: Little Barrie 'Shrug Off Love'). the same people's re-issue label ('Jazzman') is far more consistent. there's CD compilations too for the turntable deficient.

michael (michael), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Little Barry the side project of Add N to X?

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

no, they're a retro funk outfit.

http://www.littlebarrie.com/
('on tour with Paul Weller'... err, great!)

michael (michael), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I do believe when I was in London, England last year for a brief trip that I did see those Paul Weller posters advertising the Little Barrie gigs! The mix has been sent off! It's out of my hands now!

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

That Edan track sounds good at the time but gets very annoying very quickly. I'd dump it.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

nice. Non Phixion to David Grubbs, yet it all seems very...seamless. A master of the mixtape craft, you are. Ground I like to cover though, is a well known song by an unlikely artists (search Petula Clark's version of "Homeward Bound") and a great song from an otherwsie maligned album (Neil's "Computer Age") but that's just personal taste. Why not follow up the excellent forbidden planet track with a *fantastic* planet track by Alain Goraguer? Then you have the forbidden and the fantastic. Pretty good.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

definitely the best Kinski track.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I can take your hints for the next one. It did run seamless. I thought the cover of Little Miss Trinitron of Hotel California (which was kitsch, the sounds of an Eagles fan website placed in an electronic setting) suited the needs that you mentioned, albeit in reverse.

I love that Kinski track. "If we ever get out of this mess...t will be a god send ..." Personal relevance of that is when my girl and I were having troubles, serious troubles, she would play that very loudly. I find the onslaught of very loud electric guitars after that phrase very unsettlling and somewhat emotional!

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it was to be all new stuff I had to resist the temptation of putting Bruce Springsteen on there. 'Pointblank' was the definite contender instead of David Grubbs but I relented with just one Francoise Hardy song.

S Samson, Monday, 10 March 2003 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It has Racebannon (covering Beefheart, right?) + it has a great Quasimoto track + it has several things I haven't heard = it is awesome. I'm in love with mixes right now. I don't know why, but so many things just sound better taken out of the context of the album. I couldn't get into either of the Kinski albums, but that track might work for me on a mix (I'll have to revisit it). Nice work

Miranda (Miranda), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

The Kinski track sounds amazing out of context of the album. Maybe it is because I have personal memories of hearing it oh, about, four to five times a day during a long car ride. But I hear you. I always seem to play that one song.

The Racebannon album is good in selections. It's amazing all the way through but it is akin to playing the White Noise album or something like that. Very difficult and you would have to be in the right mood. The only time I accomplished it was after a night of drinking and carousing with some Westpoint friend I came back home and was wasted, sitting on my couch and playing that through headphones.

I love mixes!

S Samson, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, that is Racebannon covering Beefheart! Apologies for not responding earlier. Am about to finish up on some work and listen to Kinski before handing out. The funniest is the Earl Hilton track, he used to be the drummer from Bolt Thrower. For some strange and unearthly reason I was getting into death metal and James Yorkston at the same time.

S Samson, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

nine years pass...

For a guy I teach with--a Zeppelin fan, trying to get him onto other '70s stuff:

1. “ramble tamble,” credence clearwater revival (1970)
2. “long flowing robe,” todd rundgren (1971)
3. “downed,” cheap trick (1977)
4. “blowin’ free,” wishbone ash (1972)
5. “meadows,” joe walsh (1973)
6. “that’s all you need,” faces (1971)
7. “comin’ home,” lynyrd skynyrd (1971)
8. “sea child,” hot tuna (1972)
9. “the witch’s promise,” jethro tull (1970)
10. “24 hours at a time,” marshall tucker band (1974)
11. “message from the country,” move (1971)
12. “i wish i was your mother,” mott the hoople (1973)
13. “there goes another love song,” outlaws (1975)
14. “make me smile (come up and see me),” steve harley & cockney rebel (1975)
15. “king of the world,” steely dan (1973)
16. “oh! sweet nuthin’,” velvet underground (1970)

The CD's made, so no longer "potential." I tried to avoid over-familiar radio stuff, and I'll make a separate Neil CD eventually, so nothing by him.
