I'll take "Gone 'Til November" over "Rapture" any day of the week.

Should extra points be awarded for composition, production credit, and multi-instrumentalization?

Where does this place the Baha Men?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 10 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Hopefully underneath a very heavy rock.

I'll take singing rappers solely because unless you've always sung and rapped adding rap to your repetoire later in your career cannot be done without looking like a fool.

And to prove this treatise I'd like to use Madonna as the rule and Blondie as the exception to it.

The first two singles by Wham! contained rap. Does that mean George Michael = singing rapper? :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'm more forgiving about singing that rapping for whatever reason (see Mos Def).

So where does Cee Lo fit in here?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Lauryn Hill: yes, Eminem: no.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Rapping singers OFTEN rap better than regular rappers. (i.e.: George Michael and Debbie Harry and Ian Dury and Bob Dylan and Teena Marie and the guy in Lakeside and the guy in the Fatback Band and Woody Guthrie and Charlie Daniels rap better than 50 Cent or Tupac or anybody in De La Soul or Tribe Called Quest.) Singing rappers NEVER sing better than regular singers. (nope, not even Biz Markie). So: No fucking contest, man.

It's statements like "Charlie Daniels raps better than Tupac" that keep me coming back for more. LOL!

So where does Cee Lo fit in here?

In that very special place reserved for those very few artists who are phenomenally gifted with both rapping and singing.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

out of curiousity, which is Fred Durst? Pretty much equally known for rapping as singing. Chocolate starfish to the first person to attempt a witty answer that implies, yet again, that he sucks.

Personally, as I think he's a better rapper than singer, I'd vote for "singing rapper."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm kinda curious about Freddie: did he start as a singer and start rapping later on in life, or was it the other way around for him?

(I'm under the impression that he was a singer-turned-rapper, judging from his style, but it's quite likely that's a wrong assumption.)

And aim that "chocolate starfish" (ugh) this way, because I'm implying, no not even implying, saying flat-out...I think he sucks. But everyone knows I think that. :D

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

no chocolate starfish for you. As redundant as your dismissal was, you forgot to attempt any wittiness.

He claims to be his high school's MC Serch, so I think the rapping came first. I also assume he's a singing rapper because he picks harder-to-top rappers (Method Man) to collaborate with than singers (Weiland, the Staind dude). I still say he holds his own with Method on "N2Gether Now."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I just recently discovered he and Eminem were gonna release a cover of Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose." White singing rappers unite to get down on their knees and make love to whoever they please. Yow! And now Jay-Z and Fred are doing a collabo.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Right on. Honestly, I wish his vocals and lyrics didn't irk me the way they do, I actually honestly would really like to like their music, what with...A) myself also being a singing-rapper front-person in a rowdy-ass band, and...B) he and I sharing the same birthday (Aug. 20th); it just seems like I should be able to appreciate what he does, but it's just not happening.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

whats the consensus on Pharrell's singing? better than his rapping or what?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

which is Fred Durst?

Rotting sucker.
