"Quiet nights of quiet stars
Quiet chords from my guitar
Floating on the silence that surrounds us"
--AC Jobim

the ones in 'Rainy Night in Portland" by Watty Burnett where he talks about getting out his guitar to pass time while on a train (can't remember the exact lyrics at the moment)

I know there's gotta be a poopload more, so...

nick hornby beat me to it (songbook) but, aimee mann's "i've had it" is a great little song about making music on the road. (lyrics)

"Pick up my guitar and play / Just like yesterday"

(okay so maybe that's COMPLETELY out of context)

Speech is my hammer, bang the world into shape
Now let it fall... (Hungh!!)
My restlessness is my nemesis
It's hard to really chill and sit still
Committed to page, I write rhymes
Sometimes won't finish for days
Scrutinize my literature, from the large to the miniature
I mathematically add-minister
Subtract the wack
Selector, wheel it back, I'm feeling that

"Hip Hop" Mos Def

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

that reminds me of...

I sip the Dom P, watchin Gandhi til I'm charged
Then writin in my book of rhymes, all the words pass the margin
To hold the mic I'm throbbin, mechanical movement
Understandable smooth shit that murderers move wit
The thief's theme, play me at night, they won't act right
The fiend of hip-hop has got me stuck like a crack pipe
The mind activation, react like I'm facin time like
'Pappy' Mason with pens I'm embracin
Wipe the sweat off my dome, spit the phlegm on the streets
Suede Timb's on my feets, makes my cypher, complete
Whether crusin in a six-cab, or Montero Jeep
I can't call it, the beats make me fallin asleep
I keep fallin, but never fallin six feet deep

"The drums are too slow, the bass is too fast, the chords are all wrong, they're making the ending too long...ahh, I quit!" -The Germs, "Forming"

mike a (mike a), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Nas talks about Pappy Mason all the time. Who is that guy?

"Oh the singer, he looks angry
At being thrown to the lions
And the bass player, he looks nervous
About the girls outside
And the drummer, he's so shattered
Trying to keep up time
And the guitar players look damaged
They've been outcasts all thier lives"

Rolling Stones, Jig-Saw Puzzle

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

(Pappy Mason was a gang leader who ordered the killing of a police officer...the unusual part is that he was actually tried and found guilty for the crime)

Several of ABBA's later lyrics were about the business. With "The Day Before You Came" and "Super Trouper" possibly being the most obvious ones.

When I have some words this is the way I'll sing
through a distortion box to make them menacing
then I'm going to have to write a chorus
and this would seem to be as good as any other place
to sing until I'm blue in the face

And for a second verse of terse economy
I'll brew another pot of ambiguity
then we'll repeat the chorus
and this would seem to be as good as any other place
to sing until I'm blue in the face

happy with what you have to be happy with

"The drums are too slow, the bass is too fast, the chords are wrong, the song's gone on too long, I quit!" - Germs, "Forming"

pete's favourite lyric of all time (today):

I start to write, and then I sink into the paper, like I was ink. When I'm writing I'm trapped in between the lines - I escape when I finish the rhyme.

Several of ABBA's later lyrics were about the business

I'm looking for songs that are about creating music for the sheer joy of it, not anything that has to do w/the recording industry (that could be a whole other thread)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Not strictly speaking an answer to your question, but the first thing that came to mind was Adaptation, a film about the process of writing the script of the very film you're watching. A self-indulgent pain of a film, but immensely entertaining for all that. Btw, I love Lloyd Cole's justification of his song Forest Fire: It's just a simple metaphor / for a burning love...

Biz Markie and Heavy D "We Write The Songs"

Biz singing "we write the songs that make the whole world sing" is the best!
