anyone else like him? some of his stuff is way too hippie for my tststes, but I like most of Juju Street Songs and have been trying to get Harlem Bush Music for a little over a year now (some beatminer always outbids me) - any opinions?

i used to have a copy of Juju Street songs, but sold it not long after i bought it. i think it's the sound of the soprano sax that immediately makes me reach for the barf bag. it makes me think of smooth jazz. and one of the songs on there, i forget which one, either the stevie wonder track or 'betcha by golly wow' was just too, i dunno, sweet? maybe i don't like the original version? i forget, it's been a while.

i wanted that Harlem Bush Music too, but just never got around to it. you know there are reissues out there?

he's done some great stuff, though. he was in one of miles' electric groups. he's on "live/evil" which kicks ass. he was on Pharoah Sanders' "Summun Bukmun Umyun". he was on max roach's "member's git weary" which is a super beautiful album.

Didn't he do "Music is my sanctuary" which I have on Sky High, the Blue Note Mizell Bros comp. Definitly a bit sweet but I like it.

2 cash 4 exchange

Bartz is also on Woody Shaw's 'Blackstone Legacy', one of the first and best post-'Bitches Brew' fusion/jazz/out albs.

Erm, pardon my ignorance but what does 2 Cash 4 Exchange mean?

I guess people are generally more into his '70s stuff, but he did a really nice album for Candid during, I believe, the early '90s called There Goes the Neighborhood. His last album on his '90s deal with Atlantic, The Blues Chronicles, has a lot to recommend it as well.

Search "Bartz" - its got a killer ballad on it called something like "Keep Going on"

Norman Jay played it on his last ever show on Kiss FM

twenty-one years pass...

I saw Bartz (84 years old) for the first time this year - better late than never, but he's still in excellent form. His own discography's pretty uneven but I've been told by others who have seen him many times over his career that it's always been best to catch him live, and that's arguably reflected in his recorded work. (West 42nd Street and especially There Goes the Neighborhood come to mind - both are approximately from the same era but with different groups.) I'll also vouch for Live-Evil, which I still prefer over the complete Cellar Door sessions - a great box set, but I think Miles crafted a greater album out of those recordings, and Bartz is a key part of it.

For NTU Troop fans, Bartz is very active on social media and just posted this:

2025 is going to be a big year! I am thrilled to announce that I will be going on tour to celebrate the legacy of NTU Troop, as well as some of my biggest musical inspirations and pleasures, and I'll be joined by some great guests along the way. I also have a lot of new music coming including a new album dropping this spring! Please follow me here, or on #instagram #bandcamp #songkick or #Bandsintown to keep up with news on tour dates, guests and NEW MUSIC
