those bits during the break or the coda where nothing's really going on in the music and the burden's on the singer to do something interesting except the singer's bereft of ideas too

Destroy: Whitney's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," the part right before the final chorus where she laughs nervously and goes "wooo ... yeah" over the beat and waits for the music to come back in.

Going off at a slight tangent, there's something vaguely killjoy about songs (eg Tears of a Clown) where the vocals begin during the intro, so the singer's grand entrance doesn't have half as much impact.

(By the way, you're intended to SEARCH Ian MacKaye's hilarious rap on "Out of Step" by Minor Threat.)

This applies to a great many Kim Gordon-sung Sonic Youth tracks (and I'm a Youf fan). The most egregious example that springs to mind is the middle section of "Kool Thing," which also implicates Chuck D.

this is my favorite part of that record

I'll second damn-near all songs sung by Kim Gordon (recently listened to egregious example "The Ineffable Me"). I'll also say the coda of "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" by Wilco totally qualifies. I'd like that album even more if they'd take out those half-assed song-falling-apart codas.

I always wish they'd rip loose with some solos in CCR's
"Ramble Tamble" but it never happens.

songs (eg Tears of a Clown) where the vocals begin during the intro, so the singer's grand entrance doesn't have half as much impact.

But "Tears of a Clown" doesn't start like that. First there's that great intro with the horns and vibes together. Then big drums mixed with baritone sax. And THEN Smokey.

The KRS-One bits during REM's "Radio Song" always seemed that way (if that counts)

More proof the Germs are the greatest band ever - "The drums are too slow, the bass is too fast, the chords are wrong, this song is too long, I quit!" Then they finish the verse and do just that!
