The Real Bahamas CD has music by Spence and the Pinder Family but also a bunch of other folks. But you probably know that already. There is a similar volume on Rounder called Kneelin' Down Inside The Gate: The Great Rhyming Singers of the Bahamas and a Bahamas volume of the Lomax series "Deep River of Song." The great Frederick McQueen is the name to look for.

Also there was a series of Folkways LPs featuring music recorded by Sam Charters around the same time he found Spence; they're technically out of print but you can get them on CDR from Smithsonian Folkways.

I'm looking forward to other answers on this thread.

yeah, the "real bahamas" 2-disc set is actually the only thing i have of this type.

how do you go about getting out-of-print stuff from smithsonian folkways? that sounds like a goldmine.

Paging Kaysee.

All I know is that there is something called rake and scrape music.

They will put any of their old records on CDR for you, with a photocopy of the liner notes. Their complete catalogue is here. You should also get Folkways's in-print Joseph Spence CD; it has all the Spence material from the aforementioned Charters sessions.

so i just picked up Spence's "Good Morning Mr. Walker" (my first of his) and well,,,,,, after falling in love, i think i came to the conclusion that someone cut off his tongue and a few fingers,,,,,,,,, but i wouldn't have it any other way.
