I found a really great site that attempts to explain, with lots of audio clips, how the Arabic modal system works.

that's pretty amazing. i'm off to buy an oud to practice this stuff. ok, maybe not today.

I hope that one day I can learn how to play the oud. There's a nice example of a Riad el Sounbatti oud improvisation in the section on "Modulations."
