DFA mix CD on the cover of Muzik magazine

There's a DFA 'disco punk' mix CD on the cover of April's Muzik magazine... in the shops now, swingers.

Yes, I know. I don't regularly buy Muzik (or anything like it), but the CD caught my eye, and, having had it on repeat all morning, it's worth splashing out for.

Track list:

Metro Area - 'Orange Alert (DFA Mix)'
Out Hud - 'My Two Nads'
DK7 - 'The Difference'
LCD Soundsystem - 'Beat Connection'
Radio 4 - 'Dance To The Underground (DFA Mix)'
Black Dice - 'Endless Happiness (Remix by EYE)'
The Rapture - 'House Of Jealous Lovers (Morgan Geist Mix)'
Le Tigre - 'Deceptacon (DFA Mix)'
Plyagroup - 'Make It Happen'
Fischerspooner - 'Emerge (DFA Remix)'
The Juan Maclean - 'By The Time I Get To Venus'

Best moment? When 'Beat Connection' mixes into the 'Dance To The Underground' remix. It's just such a twist, and twists are great.

There's a half-assed feature on the DFA 'scene' on the inside of the mag, too.

The CD is a bit short, though. Any recommendations for what could be tagged onto the end when I eventually make CD-R copies for everybody I know?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Smash Hits edited by ILM, like I said.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

where is "you can't have it both ways"??? the best DFA track by a long way

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

am i the only one who really doesnt like the deceptacon remix?

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

So this is the only place to get the EYE mix of Black Dice at the moment? I'm there.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

No Geeta - on this evidence I don't think much of DFA as remixers generally (and I think the Morgan Geist HOJL is bloodless too) (remixes suck dude)

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

this issue is hilarious - i especially like the 'we clearly couldn't be arsed' under-designed front cover. the model looks like they took her to TK Maxx and got the most Trash-style look they could (ie, not very.)

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

she looks like a Madonna wannabe circa 1984

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

raaaaaaaaaaar !!
can't wait to hear it.
literally cant wait.
how ace is muzik ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

man oh man

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a good CD but why were they so scared of vocals??

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't imagine how the endless happiness remix sounds amongst radio 4 and the rapture

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I have my suspicions about this vocals thing, is it some way of wrangling the good tracks for your free cd? Audio Bullys one had hardly any vocals either, and the Jockey Slut CDs are all full of "dubs" too.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i kinda prefer the 'dubs' - how much is Muzik these days, with the cd - like $9?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

if someone could rip (>192kbs) and host that Black Dice/Eye Yamatanka remix I will paypal them $3.00 USD. email me for more info.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

does anyone know if this is on sale in america yet? (i'm not traipsing all the way out to barnes and noble if not.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It only came out in the UK this morning so I doubt it.

Gygax it's a mix CD so it's an incomplete version.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm with gygax - who wants to post an mp3 of the whole mix on soulseek? I will send an additional $3, thru paypal...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

what's a mix cd?

:P

seriously, $3. make me poor.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

come on, fellas, you stand to make $6 - that's gotta be at leats 2/3 the price you paid for tha magazine, right? i really, really, really don't wanna buy Muzik, but really wanna hear that Eye remix

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder who actually "mixed" it?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

james murphy, most likely - right?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

cubase

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

who mixed it: Tim Goldsworthy, according to James Murphy

DFA also have a full-length mix forthcoming: Colette no. 5, which will be released by Colette in France (dunno how it'll be getting a copy in the UK, in the US it'll be really difficult unless you order direct)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll paypal $3 for that too and host it.,

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

most bizarre thing of the issue
is that on the inside cover -
all the mag staff are listed with the legend 'and our favourite
disco punk tracks are...' and among these ?
'young guns' by bon jovi
and 'just like heaven' by the cure...?
am i missin summat ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

You've got until 12 midnight GMT to download this - about four hours. If more than ~100 people download this from my webspace, I'll get hit with a bandwidth bill, so share share share on soulseek and the like.

Send me an email or drop a reply here if you download the mp3s so I can keep track of how many downloads have been made - I may have to take it down earlier.

Cheers.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

$9!!!!!!!! come on guys - share! we even have Jon offering to host it!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

James Mitchell: I'm downloading it to my server now and planning on having a mirror up soon

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

hey man - thanks a bunch - downloaded most of it but had trouble with track 2 - it comes up as html document?

anyway, thanks a lot for doing that.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

You should be able to get track 2 now. I'd mispelt the file name, idiot I am.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

the eYe remix sounds dissapointing in this context

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

getting track 2 and then posting mirror

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

got it. thanks again!

and i quite like the Eye remix -

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

PLEASE DON'T SUE ME DFA

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll second tom as i was really disappointed when 'beat connection' was just an instrumental. still, it's a good cd although the mag's still pretty lightweight.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Jon!

OCP (OCP), Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

echoed - what a total and complete ripoff.
that's *not* beat connection at all. that's a 3 minute fucking cheat.
why doesn't it say 'dub'/'instrumental'/'edit' whatever ?
aren't they like, *legally* obliged to do that ?
bloody hell i like muzik, but putting a cd in a cellophane
bag so's you can't look at it and lying about the track list so's
people buy it ? (pittman voice) "it's a swizz mate..."

piscesboy, Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for doing this, guys! The EYE remix sounds awesome!

die9o (dhadis), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, thanks!! the black dice eye remix=roXoR!!!!!!!

(i still think that the DFA le tigre remix is rub)

(morgan g. remix of house of jealous lovaz is also rub)

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 13 March 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you kidding?!! The Morgan Geist remix is so fucking ace!!! Its a faultless masterclass in this funkytrackydiscohouse shit.

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 16 March 2003 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the DFA remix of Metro Area is pretty slick. I don't mind the Le Tigre one but I don't rate it hugely either, it was on Futurism 2.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 March 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

As to who mixed it, i'm sure it was Tim "the" Sweeney. He's an intern at DFA.

jd, Sunday, 16 March 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey! A party! Williamsburg! 2001! Indie kids are dancing to "I Feel Love"! It's a revolution! Indie kids! Dancing! Gadzooks it's all happening! Finally! Oh wow!"

What a stupid magazine.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 16 March 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Yea, seriously... I hope people who think Electroclash is special need a crotchstomping.

BTW: I'm pulling my mirror down soon.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 16 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
Good CD, pretty crappy mag. It's like Alternative Press for UK clubbers.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I really like the mag. I was surprised at how the features seemed to be moving away from UK club boredom (Mixmag style stuff). Tom's description is very apropo. When did it get so good?

Also, the mix is excellent.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

To be honest I was talking more about the design, I hate the paper & the layout. I haven't had a chance to check out the writing yet.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

some of it is pretty funny. check the last page. (and yes, the print quality is poor, but the layout is haphazard, like the content!)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not that bad. I liked the article about the radio station and the stuff about the studio tech even if they had little idea what it's actually for.

I like to see reviews out of context alos, like the rock albs they reviewd.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
okay, you've had a couple months now. i loved the kittin mix, is this anywhere near as good?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I was surprised at how the features seemed to be moving away from UK club boredom (M!xxmag style stuff). Tom's description is very apropo. When did it get so good?

New editor. Also deliberate movement away from M!xmag as sanctioned by IPC upstairs people.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, you've had a couple months now. i loved the kittin mix, is this anywhere near as good?

i hadn't thought much of this mix until i played it loud at home the other night, and now i love it. it really doesn't work at all on headphones, but on a stereo stuff like the black dice track is just awesome.

muzik's definitely my fave music mag at the mo (though that's not really saying much). i buy it so often i'm considering subscribing.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

actually i think the face is rather good for music too of late. what! don't look at me like that! better than ver wire anyways

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

is the cd on the cover of this month's issue any good?

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

But the Face's new reviews columns are like Lil' Missy Mack from Spizzazz only rub!
