Some rock im digging at the mo is the mad capsule markets, the faint, sweatmaster, enon, trail of the dead...
i also Love television, hendrix....

Both really overblown and totally pompous but excellent with it.

looking for recent rock albums that either kick ass or are just well-written and interesting. do not want anymore of these one-dimensional forced electro-dancey bullshit albums with over-compressed vocals up front. any recommendations?

The only recent rock acts that interest me right now are bands like the Growlers and Allah-Las, acts that play 60's garage pastiches with a slight twist. Other than that, no Hope, no Cash, no Jobs etc.

you were pretty vague about what you meant by "rock" but if we're doing metal then you have to listen to DEAFHEAVEN. lot of dissenters on this board, but the last track on their album Sunbather made me cry once.

Recent things I've liked and thought counted as Rock: Beastmilk, Against Me, Whales in Cubicles, Cheatahs.

moon duo is pretty good. eagulls are good too. joanna gruesome. and most of all JAPANDROIDS, especially if you don't want to worry about dying.

oh yeah, this band called "the babies". i love the lyrics to the song mess me around so much: "and you're a dumb fuck, you fucking idiot / yeah you're a dumb fuck, you fucking piece of shit / and you're a dumb fuck, you fucking loser / and you're a dumb fuck, you fucking stupid kid." reminds me of working entry level jobs. i listen to that song at least a few times a month.
stuff like best coast and vivian girls i like a lot too, fuzzy surf rock poppy stuff but i don't know how you feel about that. iceage get pretty messy for a band of their level of popularity. of course metz had an album in 2012. so much rock music.

The Greys 'If Anything' from last year is pretty fun. The new California X rekkid will have some screaming sell-out, but I like it - 'Nights in the Dark' ...

This may not be as shambolic or dirty as you're looking for, but here are some rock-not-pop-not-metal ideas:
