that people who violently dislike a particular type of music haven't actually heard much of it

(nb: this is still often the case, however)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

that everyone who likes the Yeah Yeah Yeahs isn't a complete idiot.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

that "newer" is always best (perennial, this one..oh, the irony!)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

opposite of jess' post: that those who did it first, did it best

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

that the first album/single/ep (ie, "older") was the best.

(crosspost)

g.cannon (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

that people are lying (to themselves) when they say they HATE likeable stuff like Billy joel and Coldplay

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

That reading statements like Fritz's should send me into a frothing fury.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm trying to overcome it, Dan!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I am really trying rather hard to get into IDM! I am finding it impossible beyond Boards of Canada.

So IDM is not boring and prankster rock.

S Samson, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

that everything I like I like not because of personal prejudices, knee-jerk responses and bugbears.

Not that I'm working that hard on overcoming it, or anything.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I must have everything, by everyone, ever! Or at least hear it so I know what everyone else is talking about.

Bill E (bill_e), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

that there is an over-arching meaning to all of this

or

that this is all just random atoms

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

that rock writing sucks.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Personal Prejudices = that people who make broad generalized statements towards styles of music haven't actually heard hardly any

Kneejerk responses = geez, I'm awful with these...I get too fired up over too many things "hip-hop", I need help. I also get kinda overworked when people reviewing Buckethead's material refer to "the bucket" and state that "he's not Slash" in lieu of actually discussing any of the music.

Bugbears = I don't actually know what this means, but "bugbears" sound like cute little cartoon characters promoting sharing and friendship and shit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

personal prejudices: let's see... at one time, if something was on the radio, it was automatic sell-out shit. underground music was the only music worth considering because it wasn't a commodity. i can remember deciding to dislike the archers of loaf because they wanted too much money for a show guarantee. i remember disliking bands for just wanting a show guarantee period. i see to also remember a band's politics suddenly being all important. are they sxe? are they vegan? pro-blah? i remember suddenly being too cool for sonic youth and pavement as well.

ah youth, (not that i'm any better now. just different.)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

That if it's somewhat well-known, it's not worth hearing.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

that local music is worth buying because it's local ("picking up reality at the traces", etc).

that when listening to local music, no matter how interesting, i should be listening to the latest bleeding-edge etcetera from germany/london/etc which is obv. better (especially since, say, nobody writes about NZ music, or at least in the, uh "ILM way", it doesn't exist as a vital/dynamic/etc).

EssKay (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

NZ music rules!
