nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Elton John?

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

80s pop music! Phil Collins, Dire Straits, Duran Duran. Great stuff!

Evan (Evan), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Supertramp.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Fer me: GWAR.

Although I can't listen to them for more than, like, 20 minutes at a time. Unless of course I'm falling-down drunk.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(wasn't this done a couple of weeks ago?)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, Dire Straits, definitely. And The Herbaliser, because stoner IDM usually makes me want to shove a pickaxe through my skull.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Abba (like, not love).

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Herbaliser are IDM?!?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Breakfast in America by Supertramp, E.L.O, the Fixx, U2 (though it's waned significantly since Achtung Baby), Crosby Stills Nash & Young,.....and I'm quite digging "Clocks" by Coldplay, I am scared to admit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i like that chemistry song by semisonic. another aye for dire straits, and a good few lightning seeds songs too.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

whitehouse. "here's an idea! get fucked!" 40-something men yelling like publouts over harsh noise.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

John Gavanti?

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Crap pomp-AOR songs by people like Triumph, Styx, and Queensryche. I'm listening to Thunder Seven at the moment. I feel truly guilty about enjoying this stuff. It's indefensible on any grounds, really.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

(I don't like the whole album though, as I'm realizing now.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Sugar Ray and New Radicals

John Paul Albin, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Britney, Boston, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, those cute boys that sing that "Swing, Swing" song... I could go on, but I won't.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Never feel bad about liking Boston. When you start voluntarily listening to Triumph, that's when you need to worry.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Tin Machine

Tijn Gilissen, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheesy Euro dancepop: DJ Sammy's "Heaven", Lasgo's "Something", Gigi D'Agustino's "I'll Fly", that type of thing. I turn it up whenever I hear 'em on the radio.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't feel bad about the All-American Rejects, Carey! Their big eyes are for you!

Today, I'll say The Soft Bulletin.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gathering

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm probably not supposed to like Humble Pie 100,000 times more than most any other '70s hard rock band (ESPECIALLY Zeppelin), but I do. The Pie rules!

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

gaz is OTM for me.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

German 80s bands Alphaville and (Münchener) Freiheit

(or at least, most "hip" people tell me I shouldn't like them)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

2 live Crew

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes - I consider "Nasty as They Wanna Be" to be an incredibly funky album with brilliant samples.

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Danzig. Mellencamp. Blind Melon. Journey. Hall and Oates. Eagles.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

there's nothing i know i shouldn't like but do. how do you define it? by asking other people "hey, should i really like this?"

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Fer me: GWAR.
Nickalicious gets a christmas card from me for admitting this.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

PS. just heard Nickaliscious IUMA mp3 ("How Does it Feel") which mixes um...the Replacements, Primus, Green Day and Taco the Wonder Dog. Fuckin awesome.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The Sean Lennon record.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I am amazed at how often this topic repeats itself on ILM

I think we all must have serious problems with our heads

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

mine is that it's ugly to look at

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Awwwww....that's so sad, Jim. I think your head looks just fine. From a distance. If you squint.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

if i squint? or you?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It's probably best if we both squint. Here, I'll start.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

gravity kills, and the machines of loving grace-- actually i don't consider them a guilty pleasure, but the two or three posts i've read concerning them on ILM have been uniformly negative (like "please, don't blame canada for that faux-industrial crap"). well, i like them, so there.

soundnfury, Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

green day (dookie). alice in chains (facelift and dirt). the eels. boston (the first album -- sorry sundar i am ashamed to like it). meatloaf (bat out of hell). jah rule. boyz2men.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 13 March 2003 08:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i almost forgot ... type o negative!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 13 March 2003 08:18 (twenty-three years ago)

and this thread is all about ... ANDREW WK!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 13 March 2003 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

John Cougar Mellencamp

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 13 March 2003 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

the eels aren't a guilty pleasure, are they?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 March 2003 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Go Avril! We love Avril! Yay yay yay!

Actually, I have a rule about albums - if I like the first three singles, then I buy the album. Complicated is fantastic, and sk8r b0i (or however she spells it) is a top morality tale for the new century. I'm REALLY glad her new song's shit though . . . I couldn't face walking in a shop and actually spending money on the album!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 13 March 2003 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a great album.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 13 March 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah...so is the new one by David Bow-ie...you know...rhymes with "howie" and "Maui?"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 March 2003 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yesterday I heard 'Sk8r Boi' in a shop and I...had to collect myself. I just paid the bill and left. I waited until the end of the song though obv. I've been having a 'difficult' time lately OK?

dave q, Thursday, 13 March 2003 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

PS. just heard Nickaliscious IUMA mp3 ("How Does it Feel") which mixes um...the Replacements, Primus, Green Day and Taco the Wonder Dog. Fuckin awesome.

And what better place to let this be known than on the "things you know you shouldn't like but do" thread! :D

Thanks, btw. It's only 8:36 am EST and you've already made my day!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I finally thought of one of these! Microdisney made feeble smirking approximations of 80s soul-pop and added look-we're-subversive lyrics and Andrew Mueller (who has atrocious taste though is quite a funny writer) likes them and on paper I really shouldn't anymore but damnation 39 Minutes is a terrific album.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops. I misread that. The track isn't called "How does it Feel"; It's not even called "How does it Be", it's called "A Brief Dissertation"
and, yes...it makes me want to Don't do the Squirrel.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha...that's the shortened title...on the CD, it's called "A Brief Dissertation On the Evolution of Animalkind and It's Relation the The Future of Man"...cause it was the shortest song on there by 5 minutes. :D

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

This, of course, means that if you made a song that was 1 second long you'd *have* to name it something like "When the Pawn hits the conflict he thinks like a king...[INSERT ENTIRE CONTENTS OF DOSTOYEVSKI'S "CRIME AND PUNISHMENT"]...expealidocious

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

iron maiden. chas n' dave. free loan investments.

kieron, Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

smash mouth. barenaked ladies. atomic kitten

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 14 March 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Too many people apologizing for liking Iron Maiden. BE PROUD AND INDIGNANT ABOUT IT, DAMMIT!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 March 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I do actually sometimes wonder if I should be liking Smashing Pumpkins as much as I am at the moment.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 14 March 2003 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

bands on this list no one should be ashamed to like: Iron Maiden, Whitehouse, Dire Straits, The eels

bands on this list whose very name is an embarrassment even for this thread: Barenaked Ladies, Smash Mouth, Green Day

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 14 March 2003 08:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Rush. Answer subject to change when I come to my senses.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 14 March 2003 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I sometimes feel bad about liking them too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 14 March 2003 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(But again, hold the real guilt until you start putting on Triumph.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 14 March 2003 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe I'm actually gonna cop to this, but "I Saw Red" by Warrant. ONLY because it reminds me of a friend.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 14 March 2003 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I do actually sometimes wonder if I should be liking Smashing Pumpkins as much as I am at the moment.
Depends. If you're grooving to "Gish", then you should be proud. If yer groovin to "Siamese Dream" you should be ashamed.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 14 March 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I was grooving to Machina 2: The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music. I think Dream is better than Gish though (although Gish isn't bad).

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 14 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha, I still listen to Mellon Collie! Me and the guitarist in my band had a bonding moment the other night when he went to pee and I picked up his guitar and started playing "Zero" and he finished and came back and sang it, and we finished and were both like 'I didn't know you liked the Punkins!'. That was cool.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

jimmy eat world

alice, Saturday, 15 March 2003 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir: A friend lent me the first Muenchener Freiheit album a couple of years ago, and I loved it. I've only heard one other called "Fantasy", but had only liked the title song from that one. I have Stefan Zauner's earlier album "Prism and Views", and think it's really good. I think I'm going to find it and listen to it before I go to bed. I haven't sorted my albums in this apartment yet, so it could mean I'll be getting to bed at 4:00 in the morning, but, damn it, it's a good album.

tom (other one), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Feeling bad about listening to the Pumpkins no matter what the era: impossible. I am however biased.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)
