Or is it similar enough to old R&B that it's ok?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

jess, I've tried to hold back on thinking you're a snob, but you're testing me.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't consider it R&B, but frankly I can't really make a convincing argument as to why, other than it just sounds so dramatically different to me than the old stuff. Too polished.
Some would argue that disco was R&B, albeit a lame, soulless, watered-down version of it.

straight man: you're trying my patience!

This time of year, Garage always seems colder than House

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The modern R&B doesn't have too much to do with old R&B, but I think we'll survive. Wasn't there an old brand of rock 'n' roll named jungle too?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

hip-pop, nu-soul/newsoul...

urban is too vague and seems a bit arrogant when so many other genres seem to emanate from the city too

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, did you know that most country music is actually made in cities???

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Carla Thomas to Mojo: "I like the light rap that's coming out now, like Joe and Babyface. I like how the newer artists seem to be taking the R&B feel, and putting a new groove on it. They're building on what we did in the beginning, and it's an acknowledgement of that, likee they're giving us their respect. Every now and then, a beautiful ballad will break through!"

man, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

goddamn, you no-funners. This is chance to MAKE UP YOUR OWN NAME FOR A GENRE!!!! Teddy Riley did this back in the day, with New Jack Swing.
Was HE a racist?

I'm gonna vote for The Undeniable Thump, Nu Jack Swing or bofro.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Bass-dominant R&B is to now be referred to as Thumpa.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

We should call it Sizzoul: Soul that Sizzles for my B-Boy Nizzles. That whole thing, every time we refer to it.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Either that or we can be all retro and call it "race music." Who among us doesn't thirst for the revival of that wonderful concept?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Me! Me! I do! I...um, oops...
