I think all three are good songs but sound very much alike. Do you know which came first, the Jim Carrol tune or the one by the Nails?

pedro the jagura (pedro the jaguar), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Nails was the earlier one tho I have no info at hand to back it up. Apparently the single version is better than the rerecorded LP track (the only version I have).

But anyway, what LP was the Jim Carroll track on (if it was on one) for AFAIK it's not on either Catholic Boy or Dry Dreams. Or am I wrong?

Bill E (bill_e), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe it is on Catholic Boy. If it isn't, it surely is on the same one that has "Wicked Gravity" as it is the only one of his that I owned.

I really do like that Butthole Surfers song a lot.

Adam A. (Keiko), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you all high?

Fuckin' JIM CARROLL came first and TROUNCES THEM ALL!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

as far as origin goes....carroll's comes first (80 for the single and on the album catholic boy) and then the nails (81 - single, rerecorded for first album in 84) and then the surfers (96). and i think it tends to follow that pattern in order of importance/standardosity. "Names" off the new cat power record is yet another great addition to this list. but what i really want to know is if anyone knows any gossip/facts about the references/name drops in these songs....

who is pauline?....anyone know if carrol really was friends with a guy named bobby who ODed on drano?......i am pretty sure:
"Mikey had a facial scar and Bobby was a racist
They were all in love dying they were doin' it in Texas"
-Pepper
Bobby is in reference to Bobby SoXX from Texas punk band stickmen with rayguns (may he forever rot in hell).

so yeah any other speculation?
here's lyrics

Could "Rumors" by the Timex Social Club be included in this discussion, if only for that one verse?

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the styrenes - all the wrong people are dying

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Psychedelic Furs' "All of this and Nothing,"...

but "People Who Died" still wins.

Oh no. NO. Aw crap.

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 13 September 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

Nothing he ever recorded mattered as much to me as "The Basketball Diaries," the rare example of a thing so good it kind of makes it impossible or even a little obnoxious for anyone to try to do that kind of thing again.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 14 September 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

But "People Who Died" is magnificent. Just watched YouTube of it three times in a row.

"people who died" one of the earliest songs I heard that was being called "punk" - I was just a kid & I loved it so much. all that dripping attitude & energy - really such a successful combination of poetry & what-you-like-about-verse-that-people-don't-call-"poetry." because all my junkie friends seemed to sort of automatically accept Carroll as a great artist owing to his one-of-us status (this in my experience is super-common w/junkies, all art made by junkies must be thought of as excellent) I was kinda put off him for a good long time. got into catholic boy later on and thought: wow, swinging for the fences here, just going right for it. 60 seems so young to die.

"people who died" is great. It's like a Christmas Carol, I have eleven different versions of it.

MCCCXI (u s steel), Monday, 14 September 2009 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

What John said. Died much too soon. I really am gonna miss the dude. The record is just awesome and so's his book. Never got around to read that one about... the cinema though? What was it again.

I don't know if Jim Carroll knew him, but Marc Campbell of Nails is also now a people who died.
