Haha he's gonna be hosting 120 Minutes too!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

no mtv

:(

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont get either of these channels!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

damn, Elvis C. is brilliant subbing as host on the Letterman show.

Aaron A., Thursday, 13 March 2003 04:40 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks Mark! I had no idea. cool.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

i really want to see him live now.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the performance wasn't crazy great (i hate hate hate when singers take liberties with the main hook of a song in live versions) but skinner's fun as hell to watch

the little faces he pulls between lines are classic

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

(they did "lets push things forward" and gave it an even lazier ska voibe)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

plus i liked how he kept mugging to cuba gooding jr offstage

"d'ya want to come have a dance?"

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It was great...he's gonna be huge in america

geeg, Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

solid stuff.

are his performances like this in the u.k.? i was taken aback by the live band and the dude singing the hook and throwing in on some lines in the verses and making them less understandable. it seemed like some sort of grab for u.s. "conscious" authenticity and grrr. leno introduced them as a rap group.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

its kinda too bad that possibly the most accessible song on the album is one of the least visceral ones lyrically

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

That set they had them on was a grab for Monie Love's consciousness! Or maybe De La from way back when.

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah sterling what's wrong with "rap group"?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

haha he IS a "rap group"

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys think he's going to be "huge in america"? On the basis of that? You're nuts.

Who in the heck do you think his audience is going to be?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

And since when has a "promotional tour" broken a british act since Led Zeppelin?

I mean the album has already been out a while and lord knows every two-bit critic has jizzed all over it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Geezers at the pub in burbank?

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

diamond keep yr pants on

last i checked "you guys" was one person

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Well anyway that performance was laughable. It will never fly here.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ten years ago, Suede played Leno in a megahype performance, and of course after that America fell to them in scenes not seen since Duran Duran's heyday.

Er.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

one producer who mcs != "rap group"

"And now.. that popular R&B quartet, Bruce Springsteen"
"And now, motown sensations, Smog"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I still have on tape somewhere the time when the Cocteau Twins were on the tonight show. Sometimes I STILL think that I dreamed the whole thing.

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"And now, motown sensations, Smog"

i have no doubt Bill Callahan is capable of this

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

sterl, don't be a pedant

PiL to thread

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

fair enough sterling, but he raps + he has a group = its not THAT inaccurate

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

And the time that P.J. Harvey fired her band and just played solo with electric guitar and bad strobe lights? Reeeeeaaaaallllyyyy uncomfortable.Yikes!!! She looked a fright!

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

But she still put on one hell of a performance regardless. And entertained people with her farm stories.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"And now, the UK's hottest nu-garridge act..."

Aaron A., Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes she did,Ned! You remember. The twisting of the sheep testicles. No, her performance was riveting, but it was more akin to performance art. She was shaking and didn't have a band to back her up. And when she was booked for the show I think she still had one! "Lick my legs.I'm on fire" a capella by yourself in front of god know who on national t.v. Ya gotta have heart!

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Tatu on Carson Daly in 2 minutes... oh whatta night!

Aaron A., Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

They're showing a Leno rerun w/ Missy now.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit! I missed it.If only your heads up had been 10 minutes faster. Well,I did see them on Mad TV although I missed the tonight show. Did they have sex with a snake and Carson and Fran Drescher? Or something equally as memorable. Or did they just lip-sync the damned single and act coy?

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the mics were on at least... but they showed the kiss during the break early in the song, whereas on Craig Kilborne the camera went to the drummer for the entire kiss, haha.

Aaron A., Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember when Morrissey was on the tonight show? Jeez, what a big deal.I like this flood of memories I am getting of network t.v. musical appearances. The Cars on the Midnight Special. How scared I was of Tina Weymouth as a kid when I saw her on Saturday Night Live cuz I thought she looked like a zombie junkie.

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

What's that website that lists all music acts coming up on t.v.? I gotta bookmark that. I am just losing my brain cells left and right. Ten years ago I would have known about Tatu's appearances before THEY knew about them!

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Morrissey was just recently on Craig K. Two consecutive nights. Good performances, too, especially "Everyday is Like Sunday".

I don't know where to find the late-nite schedules, btw.

Aaron A., Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Morrissey was on Kilborn for two nights? What, is he a big fan or something? I find that hard to imagine.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Lou Rawls and Aretha Franklin (together) are on public tv here in Chicago.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks,Jody Beth! I am duly bookmarked! Now I know to catch Killer Mike on Carson Daly tomorrow.Yeah, apparently,Kilborn IS a huge Moz fan. Of course I missed that too cuz I stopped watching his show the week it came on.I never check my local listings anymore.

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:41 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a sad day when I hear such diarrhetic, arythmic
bullshit described as MCing. He sounds like the rapping
Dr. Evil. ("coupla bee-hotches - why not")

And I was dissapointed to find out that geezer is the
same as bloke. I liked it better when I thought it had
street/crime connotations.

skwirl puhlise (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

He's okay. I mean he's no Ian Dury, but the kids seem to like him.

Scott Seward, Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:49 (twenty-three years ago)

geezer is the
same as bloke. I liked it better when I thought it had
street/crime connotations.

that IS what geezer means - or rather it has become that thanks to The Fast Show, Mike Skinner and various other factors

quite why Skinner is concerned about exposure in the States is beyond me, but respect for taking it out on the road to the U.S. and Australia as he has done - you wouldnt expect it really would you? he just needs to get Pitman as a support act and world domination will ensue

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 March 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

they sucked. i wanted to like it. it sucked.

steve k (stevek10), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that's the thing. I know I came off as harsh and dismissive upthread, but I wanted to like it. I wouldn't have bothered watching the darn thing if I didn't. Unfortunately the performance just ended up confirming my prejudices.
