personally, i prefer "indie" (for lack of a better term) music.. but i have a guilty pleasure for doo-wop/oldies esp. groups like the Crests, Dion and the Belmonts, The Dell-Vikings, The Moonglows, The Skyliners, The Impressions, The Flamingoes, Frankie Valli (both solo and w/ the Four Seasons).... who's with me ?

On board here only if you change the name of this thread to "Got Vocal Harmony?" Drop Dion, Valli w&wo, The Skyliners, and the Impressions (great but to late). Push the Crests and Dell Vikings over to one ?'able side. Then add The Scarlets, and the Orchids (on KING only) and a half dozen other mid 50's groups. How about the Hornets, the Larks (on Appollo) the Five Keys, the Orioles and the Nutones? You might then draw some ink from the HC's

godspeed...

Why on earth would you feel "guilty" about liking some of the best music of the last century?

You're supposed to feel guilty about that indie stuff.

Orioles are too early. How about the Cadillacs? They're great. And the Jive Five!

They were not doo wop but everyone needs to own some Ravens. Haunting, amazing, stellar stuff! Jimmy Ricks makes Michael Gira sound like...um,someone with a really high voice that will make my point that Jimmy Ricks has the voice of doom for the ages.('cept, not really doom.Just a voice for the ages.)

I love this stuff although I'm only just getting into it.

classic:

The Capris - There's A Moon Out Tonight
The Flamingoes - I Only Have Eyes for You
The Jacks - Why Don't You Write Me?
The Penguins - Love Will Break Your Heart

Who does "Gloria" ("...it's not Marie-ee-ee")--that's beautiful.

Dog,

Dig deeper. Those are the hits, fine as they are. It gets better, much better.

Try to find "Rubber Biscuit" by The Chips. You'll love it.

Amateurist,
A bunch of groups have done that song Gloria.. I suggest typing it in on Kazaa and downloading several and I'm sure you'll find a version that you like.

The Doo Wop Box on Rhino is stellar, though the last few songs on the last disc (bringing it into the 70s-90s) aren't necessary at all. The Doo Wop Box 2 is also great, 3 less so. And I'm a big fucking fan of The Birth of Doo Wop, on Proper UK, four discs retailing for about $25 that cover 1948-54 or so. Unreal stuff on these all.

In response to the first answer by "V"... yes i do like much more obscure doo wop groups such as the Bleu Lights (see if you can find "Yes I Do" or "Forever"), the Fascinators, Shep & The Limelites, Billy & The Essentials etc.. i cant think offhand.. while i do like the groups i mentioned, they are not the only worthy doo wop groups out there.. i realize there are many more and have been listening to this stuff for years..
For AMAZING vocal harmony look up anything by Kenny Vance and the Planotones (esp. This I Swear and Please Say You Want Me) The song they were known for was "Looking For An Echo" which is featured on the movie soundtrack of the same title.

I generally don't have much of a fondness for anything pre-"Please Please Me" at all.

I don't have Kazaa, or a fast connection for that matter, or a CD burner. :(

The "Gloria" I'm thinking of, I now realize, is by the aforementioned Cadillacs.

V: Give us some recommendations for obscure doo wop!

I dig on all that.

I love loads of old doo wop, and there are lots of good acts mentioned here. I have to mention the Casinos' Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye, because it's my favourite.
