TS: Singing vs rapping

"MORE democratic? No way! Rap music is HARDER to do than 'singing' music! With rap you have to come up with lots of words, singers can just go 'whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh'" - Vanilla Ice

"I listen to rap alot. My main interest is lyrics, and the best lyrics are in that music. It does seem a bit of a shortcut though, you can come up with the most brilliant line if you don't have to fit it to a melody, it's like playing tennis without a net" - Randy Newman

(I know neither VI or RN are 'golden tongues/throats' or whatever, btw)

The vast majority of clever-clever lyricists have never really bothered trying to fit into a melody, though. Look at Dylan.

both Vanilla Ice and Randy newman are correct, as always

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 March 2003 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Some people overestimate lyrics. Lyrics aren't that important. People such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon and Stephen Morrissey would all have been writing better songs if they hadn't been putting too many syllables into their melodies for the sake of the lyrics.

Singing wears better.

I like when people do stuff that is both-singing-and-rapping-at-the-same-time. That's the shit!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Like, say, Arrested Development?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Singing is vastly more interesting and appealing to me. There is plenty of room in singing for an emphasis on rhythm, if you want to go in that direction.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I was thinking more of folks whose "flows" are also melodic phrases, such as the Latyrx guys and some Cee-Lo stuff and such. Like, where the rhythm of their delivery is definitely "rap", but they're also shifting notes so that their verses are also melodic lines.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"flows"

I so eagerly await the retirement of this insanely overused verb in the context of hip hop slang. Likewise "flavour".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

its "flava". d'yu have cutton in your ears man

rex jr., Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry Alex, it's one of those terms I'm trying very hard to eliminate from my lexicon, but years of freestyle sessions and such have BRANDED it into my personal dialect. It would be easier if it wasn't so appropriate.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I am having a heavy flow!

girl scour heroin, Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

When I flow I cant spellz

girl scout heroin, Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

lyrics are overrated, just like guitar solos. i believe there is an analogy between heavy metal and hiphop there. both are onany. guitar wanking and microphone wanking. Yngwe Malmsten and Eminem, Van Halen and Busta...

bone thugz & harmony! the best combination of the two

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 14 March 2003 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

A bad rap is always better to listen to than bad singing.
(Everybody must right now listen to John Holt's "Ali Baba" as I just did and hear how he sings AND flows over dat beat (Hi Alex)

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 March 2003 06:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Ja Rule.. the worst combination of the two.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 14 March 2003 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

that gap between the best and worst is razor thin

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 March 2003 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)
