I've been hearing a lot of good things about this. Anyone know?

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw a copy on ebay for over $600... i guess i'll sadly stick to the cd.

j fail (cenotaph), Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

class-diddly-assic. she has such an achingly beautiful, quiet voice and the songs are generally great. definitely one of the best 60s/70s UK folk albums.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

very much Classic - but just as much an acquired taste. her music can make you feel like you're sipping cirrus clouds from an earthenware ewer - if you love Vashti's voice. otherwise you're in for more of a drowning slowly in treacle whilst bluebirds flit just above your head vibe...

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Its very nice but a bit twee, I have some sympathy for those who hate it for being all songs about her little horsie and how ncie he is. But I still like it.

tigerclawskank, Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic - and I hear she's appearing on the Steve Malkmus-headed bill at the Royal Festival Hall in April (19th I think). Unless I dreamed the whole thing.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 13 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, that's great and all, but the only reason anyone knows or cares about this music is a) because of the Incredible String Band and b) because Mojo did a Buried Treasure on her. yes, it's incredible music for sure, but it's nothing worth bending your mind around, losing sleep over, throwing away your whole collection of records just so you can ONLY own Vashti Bunyan. It'll be awful if I hear her songs in a Saturn commerical or something, but who gives a shit anyway? I know JB's laughing all the way to the river...

i briefly considered spending the four figures to get a copy of the original vinyl, then i woke the fuck up to myself.. i haven't heard the entire album but what I have heard is completely lovely. plus her contribution to the Piano Magic album is ace too.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

You can hear a few songs by her in the WFMU archive:

http://www.wfmu.org/artistbrowser.php?action=artist&artist=Vashti+Bunyan&artist_id=10979

I first heard of her via Devendra Banhart.
I'm enthralled by what I've heard so far. Enchanting original voice.

Classic, in the same league as Nick Drake.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gee, the only reason i know or care about her has nothing to do with either ISB or mojo - my girlfriend saw the CD in other music, liked the cover and song titles and bought it.

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 14 March 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the thing that caught my eye was the price tag on the original vinyl. kinda pathetic really

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 14 March 2003 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

'Winter is Blue' is nice.

Paul R (paul R), Saturday, 15 March 2003 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

O classic classic classic.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish they'd included the Decca 45 on the reissue, but you can't have everything

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as i can tell, the only (released) track of hers that isn't comped is "i want to be alone"..

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought the reissued 'just another diamond day' (stephen pastel: 'O I love her stuff, but not everyone does, she's an acquired taste') and am in love. so quiet. half human, half nothing-at-all.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

what percentage of that love specifically is down to 'i'd like to walk around in your mind someday'? cos for me that's the main reason..

pete s, Monday, 1 March 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

is she scottish or something? her accent is cool.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

her website doesn't say much about where she's from.. mostly refers to London and Skye..

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i notice she's done three songs with animal collective

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe she just has a lisp

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I REALIZE THAT I HAVE HAD CRUSHES ON THREE GIRLS WITH LISPS

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN

(sorry for the momentarily jon williamsness)

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i'm starting a lisp thread

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Her duet with Devendra Banhart on the "Golden Apples Of The Sun" comp is terrific, but what's amazing is that it sounds dead-on to something from back in the day.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i wonder how long we're going to have to wait for her second solo album (does anyone know if simon raymonde is still involved?)

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Just Another Diamond Day was pretty disappointing for me. It's like Joe Boyd's pulling out all the stops to try and salvage *something*, but the songwriting -lyrically and melodically- is so wet, it's little wonder it sank without a trace the first time round. Absolutely Dudsville.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

what were you expecting from it?

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i can totally imagine what you mean by "wet" songwriting... i've made similar judgements about a lot of "legendary"/rediscovered britfolk records in the past.

i have a comp with both sides of vashti's pre-lp 45 and the b-side is really good, though kind of a "mood piece" more than a well-constructed song. i can imagine this wearing thin after 35 minutes.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

what were you expecting from it?

That's a good question. I can normally handle froth and whimsy, stuff like Tom Rapp or ISB does a pretty god job of transporting me, but somehow Vashti seems rather more lobotomised than visionary. All that stuff about watching the boats in the bay and then running off home in time for tea... hmmm, someone's been talking to their horsey for a bit too long.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i've become a huge fan of this album over the last month. at first i found all the tweeness annoying, but after a while i started getting 'transported' like nickb doesnt - she paints her own world in a charming way that isn't lobotomised to me, just very very naive.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

so twee it makes my teeth ache. Damn you Bob Stanley

bham, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, she is scottish.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't think she is actually

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, my liner notes say she is from london

do they have horses in london?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, they have horses in London.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I associate her with Linda Perhacs. They both had CDs out a few years ago, Perhacs mastered from vinyl and Vashti a bootleg, then more recently they both had proper releases from original tapes and I got them at the same time. They are apples and oranges, but uk female folk apples and oranges. The Perhacs CD is more experimental and I highly recommend it. Quite beautiful as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhacs is actually a cool California folk mistress. Can't you just feel the sand between your toes when listening to Parallelograms?

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Perhacs more than the Bunyan, but yeah, they don't really sound that much alike. However, it seems Bunyan has this groundswell of support from lots of free/psych folk bands.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't heard much Bunyan but Perhacs, definitely worth it -- the album's a dream and then some.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really think they sound alike, just associated them because I heard them on the same day, then bought their CDs 2 years later on the same day. Don't know why I assumed Perhacs was UK. And the second song on the CD sounds like something Heart really liked.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, she lives/lived in Scotland, she is not Scottish.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I found out about her from the film "Tonight Let's All Make Love in London" that shows her producer (Andrew Loog Oldham) overseeing a recording session, and she does a duet with Twice as Much that is fantastic, "The Coldest Night of the Year" it's called. Soulseek has ALL of this so you would do well to start downloading...

Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

perhacs is really interesting, i suspect bunyan is less so.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

DL these tracks The coldest night of the year with Twice as much (WHY didn´t they release this as a 45 as they planned i would have forked out 100$ + for it), i´d like to walk around in your mind (yet again they decide not to release it on 45, infact not at all! appears on the cd version of the reissue), diamond day, i want to be alone, Some things just stick to your mind, Love song.

Tell me more about the Animal Collective songs!

I read that she was working with Four Tet on her new albu,m but that was a while ago.

heroes + villains, Friday, 21 May 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Though I'm pissed that she's been working with all the wrong people lately. She should hook up with Greg Davis.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't even know who that is. "wrong" people? i somehow don't think keiran hebden is seeking to turn her into the next erlend oye

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I am just referring to the fact that she seems to be working with the artsy indie hip instead of collaborating with musicians who, in my opinion, would render wonderful results. This is only my opinion.

Four Tet is an excellent producer but a weak musician, to my ears. Animal Collective is too art-zombie-rock for me. It's just a question of tastes I suppose.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

one other thing to consider is that her songwriting is likely to be quite different now, so people who would have suited her 70s writing might necessarily not suit her current writing as well.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, fair enough. I'm just being idealistic. :-)

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.chicagoreader.com/TheMeter/040521.html

Here's a recent article on Greg Davis, by the way. Extremely talented and nice guy. Huge Vashti fan.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Animal Collective and Greg Davis have shared tours and a label of sorts, Carpark/Paw-Tracks. Animal Collective may be "artsy indie hip" but so is Greg Davis in a slightly different context.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Greg Davis has expressed his distaste for AC to me. The only reason they toured together was the formal relation.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know who i'd like to see her work with. i fear my choices would be terrifically schmindie

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, this is Greg's response to you: " im certainly not as hip and trendy as the animal collective." :-)

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the laptop, does it every time. Less software, more acid, his hipster quotient will sky-rocket.

anybody know exactly when this was reissued? just got a copy today and it's quite nice.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Kieran Hebden produced the new James Yorkston LP and not a laptop in sight. In fact (apologies if this sounds wanky) when I interviewed Mr Yorkston recently, he said that KH's approach is basically to set up the mikes and press record. It's resulted in a lovely, warm sound. I'd imagine he'd do the same for Vashti, rather than glitch it up.

stew, Saturday, 27 November 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, somebody please *describe* the Perhacs! She was in Mojo too of course of course, so maybe that's why the Brit association over Cali (pretty much the same to a Johnny Reb)

don: jest grab the perhacs.

Beta (abeta), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

perhacs voice reminds me a bit of joni mitchell. she's rilly rather good. vashti bunyan is kinda classic as well.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

joni mitchell meets phill niblock. or fifty foot hose. one instrument is "amplified garden hose." the extra demo tracks on the last reissue really show that she knew the sounds she wanted, and was doing some wacked out four-track tweaks on her own.

Book is absolutely delightful. Just read it overnight. Then listened to Diamond Day again cos hadn't thought to find it while reading the section on its recording.and had shifted it around in a few piles over the last couple of weeks.
There's some good podcast appearances tied in with the books release too.
